Abstract

Methods, systems and devices for enhancing sleep, including enhancing the quality of sleep, reducing sleep onset time, increasing total sleep time, treating insomnia, and/or treating other neurological disorders by non-invasive temperature regulation of the frontal cortex prior to and/or during sleep. Described herein are thermal applicators that include phase change materials and/or evaporative cooling, as well as headgear for securing the applicators comfortably against the appropriate region of the user's head.

Claims (32)

1 . A method of improving sleep by non-invasively applying hypothermal therapy to a user's forehead, comprising:

placing a thermal transfer region in communication with the skin of a user on the forehead of the user;

the thermal transfer region including at least one Peltier device operable to cool the skin of the user;

activating the at least one Peltier device and cooling the thermal transfer region to a set temperature between about 14° C. and about 18° C.; and

maintaining the set temperature for a time period extending at least 15 minutes.

2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the thermal transfer region further includes at least one phase change material.

3 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the at least one phase change material has a phase transition between about 14 degrees C. and about 18 degrees C.

4 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the thermal transfer region comprises a plurality of capsules each encapsulating the at least one phase change material, wherein the capsules are arranged in a matrix of thermally conductive and conformable material.

5 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one phase change material comprises a mixture of two or more different phase change materials.

6 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the thermal transfer region is attached to a headgear, and wherein the headgear is removably securable to the head of the user.

7 . The method of claim 6 , wherein the headgear includes a strap configured to attach the headgear to the head of the user.

8 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising placing the thermal transfer region such that it cools the skin of the user over the frontal cortex of the user.

9 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising maintaining the set temperature for greater than about 30 minutes.

10 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the thermal transfer region has a thermal conductivity of greater than about 0.1 watts per meter kelvin (W/(m*K)).

11 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising the thermal transfer region not contacting the periorbital regions or the cheek regions of the face of the user during use.

12 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising the thermal transfer region not contacting the back of the head of the user during use.

13 . A method of improving sleep by non-invasively applying hypothermal therapy to a user's forehead, comprising:

placing a thermal transfer region in communication with the skin of a user on the forehead of the user;

the thermal transfer region including at least one Peltier device operable to cool the skin of the user; and

activating the at least one Peltier device and cooling the thermal transfer region to a set temperature between about 14° C. and about 18° C.;

wherein the thermal transfer region further includes at least one phase change material.

14 . The method of claim 13 , wherein the at least one phase change material has a phase transition between about 14 degrees C. and about 18 degrees C.

15 . The method of claim 13 , wherein the thermal transfer region comprises a plurality of capsules each encapsulating the at least one phase change material, wherein the capsules are arranged in a matrix of thermally conductive and conformable material.

16 . The method of claim 13 , wherein the at least one phase change material comprises a mixture of two or more different phase change materials.

17 . The method of claim 13 , wherein the thermal transfer region is attached to a headgear, and wherein the headgear is removably securable to the head of the user.

18 . The method of claim 17 , wherein the headgear includes a strap configured to attach the headgear to the head of the user.

19 . A method of improving sleep by non-invasively applying hypothermal therapy to a user's forehead, comprising:

placing a thermal transfer region in communication with the skin of a user on the forehead of the user;

the thermal transfer region including at least one phase change material operable to cool the skin of the user; and

maintaining the set temperature for a time period extending at least 15 minutes;

wherein the at least one phase change material has a phase transition between about 10 degrees C. and about 18 degrees C.

20 . The method of claim 19 , wherein the at least one phase change material comprises a mixture of two or more different phase change materials.
