Perception systems and methods for identifying and processing a variety of objects
A drop perception system is disclosed that includes an open housing structure having an internal volume, an open top and an open bottom, and a plurality of perception units positioned to capture perception data within the internal volume at a plurality of locations between the open top and the open bottom of the open housing.
1. A perception system for processing one or more objects, said perception system comprising:
a structure including an open path extending between a top and a bottom;
a first plurality of perception units that substantially surround a first upper portion of the open path;
a second plurality of perception units that substantially surround a second lower portion of the open path;
a processor for processing perception data from each of the first plurality of perception units and the second plurality of perception units, and for determining whether more than one object identifying code are among the perception data from each of the first plurality of perception units and the second plurality of perception units; and
a routing system for, if it is determined that more than one object identifying codes are among the perception data from each of the first plurality of perception units and the second plurality of perception units, directing the more than one objects to any of a return path or a manual sort path.

The perception system as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the structure is provided with an open housing with an open housing top and an open housing bottom, the open housing top being associated with the top of the structure and the open housing bottom being associated with the bottom of the structure.
3. The perception system as claimed in claim 2 , wherein the perception system further includes an entry detector for detecting the one or more objects entering the open housing top.
4. The perception system as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the perception system further includes a plurality of illumination sources.
5. The perception system as claimed in claim 4 , wherein the plurality of illumination sources includes a plurality of LEDs.
6. The perception system as claimed in claim 4 , wherein each of the plurality of illumination sources is associated with a perception unit of the plurality of perception units.
7. The perception system as claimed in claim 4 , wherein the plurality of illumination sources includes a plurality of sets of illumination sources, each set of illumination sources being associated with a perception unit of the plurality of perception units.
8. The perception system as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the routing system includes a conveyor.
9. The perception system as claimed in claim 8 , wherein the conveyor is a bi-directional conveyor.
10. The perception system as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the perception system further includes an intermediate element between the bottom of the structure and the routing system, the intermediate element for receiving the one or more objects and facilitating identification of the one or more objects.
11. A perception system for processing one or more objects, said perception system comprising:
a structure including an open path that extends between a top and a bottom;
a first plurality of perception units that substantially surround a first upper portion of the open path;
a second plurality of perception units that substantially surround a second lower portion of the open path;
a processor for processing perception data from each of the first plurality of perception units and the second plurality of perception units, and for determining whether no object identifying code is among the perception data from each of the first plurality of perception units and the second plurality of perception units; and
a routing system for, if it is determined that more than no object identifying code is among the perception data from each of the first plurality of perception units and the second plurality of perception units, directing any object received from the bottom or the structure to any of a return path or a manual sort path.
12. The perception system as claimed in claim 11 , wherein the structure is provided with an open housing with an open housing top and an open housing bottom, the open housing top being associated with the top of the structure and the open housing bottom being associated with the bottom of the structure.
13. The perception system as claimed in claim 12 , wherein the perception system further includes an entry detector for detecting the one or more objects entering the open housing top.
14. The perception system as claimed in claim 11 , wherein the perception system further includes a plurality of illumination sources.
15. The perception system as claimed in claim 14 , wherein the plurality of illumination sources includes a plurality of LEDs.
16. The perception system as claimed in claim 14 , wherein each of the plurality of illumination sources is associated with a perception unit of the plurality of perception units.
17. The perception system as claimed in claim 14 , wherein the plurality of illumination sources includes a plurality of sets of illumination sources, each set of illumination sources being associated with a perception unit of the plurality of perception units.
18. The perception system as claimed in claim 11 , wherein the routing system includes a conveyor.
19. The perception system as claimed in claim 18 , wherein the conveyor is a bi-directional conveyor.
20. The perception system as claimed in claim 11 , wherein the perception system further includes an intermediate element between the bottom of the structure and the routing system, the intermediate element for receiving the one or more objects and facilitating identification of the one or more objects.
21. A method of processing one or more objects, said method comprising:
providing a structure including an open path extending between a top and a bottom;
providing a first plurality of perception units that substantially surround a first upper portion of the open path;
providing a second plurality of perception units that substantially surround a second lower portion of the open path;
processing perception data from each of the first plurality of perception units and the second plurality of perception units;
determining whether more than one object identifying codes are among the perception data from each of the first plurality of perception units and the second plurality of perception units; and
routing, if it is determined that more than one object identifying codes are among the perception data from each of the first plurality of perception units and the second plurality of perception units, the more than one objects to any of a return path or a manual sort path.
22. The method as claimed in claim 21 , wherein the structure is provided with an open housing with an open housing top and an open housing bottom, the open housing top being associated with the top of the structure and the open housing bottom being associated with the bottom of the structure.
23. The method as claimed in claim 22 , wherein the method further includes detecting the one or more objects entering the open housing top.
24. The method as claimed in claim 21 , wherein the method further includes providing illumination with a plurality of illumination sources.
25. The method as claimed in claim 24 , wherein the plurality of illumination sources includes a plurality of LEDs.
26. The method as claimed in claim 24 , wherein each of the plurality of illumination sources is associated with a perception unit of the plurality of perception units.
27. The method as claimed in claim 24 , wherein the plurality of illumination sources includes a plurality of sets of illumination sources, each set of illumination sources being associated with a perception unit of the plurality of perception units.
28. The method as claimed in claim 21 , wherein the routing the more than one objects to any of a return path or a manual sort path includes a using a conveyor.
29. The method as claimed in claim 28 , wherein the conveyor is a bi-directional conveyor.
30. The method as claimed in claim 21 , wherein the method further includes receiving the one or more objects with an intermediate element between the bottom of the structure and the routing the more than one objects to any of a return path or a manual sort path.
31. A method of processing one or more objects, said method comprising:
providing a structure including an open path extending between a top and a bottom;
providing a first plurality of perception units that substantially surround a first upper portion of the open path;
providing a second plurality of perception units that substantially surround a second lower portion of the open path;
permitting one or more objects to travel along the open path;
processing perception data from each of the first plurality of perception units and the second plurality of perception units;
determining whether no object identifying code is among the perception data from each of the first plurality of perception units and the second plurality of perception units;
receiving the one or more objects from the bottom of the structure; and
routing, if it is determined that no object identifying codes is among the perception data from each of the first plurality of perception units and the second plurality of perception units, the one or more objects to any of a return path or a manual sort path.
32. The method as claimed in claim 31 , wherein the structure is provided with an open housing with an open housing top and an open housing bottom, the open housing top being associated with the top of the structure and the open housing bottom being associated with the bottom of the structure.
33. The method as claimed in claim 32 , wherein the method further includes detecting the one or more objects entering the open housing top.
34. The method as claimed in claim 31 , wherein the method further includes providing illumination with a plurality of illumination sources.
35. The method as claimed in claim 34 , wherein the plurality of illumination sources includes a plurality of LEDs.
36. The method as claimed in claim 34 , wherein each of the plurality of illumination sources is associated with a perception unit of the plurality of perception units.
37. The method as claimed in claim 34 , wherein the plurality of illumination sources includes a plurality of sets of illumination sources, each set of illumination sources being associated with a perception unit of the plurality of perception units.
38. The method as claimed in claim 31 , wherein the routing the more than one objects to any of a return path or a manual sort path includes a using a conveyor.
39. The method as claimed in claim 38 , wherein the conveyor is a bi-directional conveyor.
40. The method as claimed in claim 31 , wherein the method further includes receiving the one or more objects with an intermediate element between the bottom of the structure and the routing the one or more than one objects to any of a return path or a manual sort path.
