Abstract

A spinal implant has a proximal region and a distal region, and includes an upper body and a lower body each having inner surfaces disposed in opposed relation relative to each other. A proximal adjustment assembly is disposed between the upper and lower bodies at the proximal region of the spinal implant and is adjustably coupled to the upper and lower bodies, and a distal adjustment assembly is disposed between the upper and lower bodies at the distal region of the spinal implant and is adjustably coupled to the upper and lower bodies. The proximal and distal adjustment assemblies are independently movable with respect to each other to change a vertical height of at least one of the proximal region or the distal region of the spinal implant.

Claims (27)

1. A spinal implant comprising:

an upper body including an outer surface;

a lower body including an outer surface, a height dimension of the spinal implant being defined between the outer surface of the upper body and the outer surface of the lower body;

a first adjustment assembly disposed between the upper and lower bodies in a first region of the spinal implant, the first adjustment assembly being adjustably coupled to the upper and lower bodies so as to change the height dimension of the spinal implant in the first region upon actuation of the first adjustment assembly; and

a second adjustment assembly disposed between the upper and lower bodies in a second region of the spinal implant, the second adjustment assembly being adjustably coupled to the upper and lower bodies so as to change the height dimension of the spinal implant in the second region upon actuation of the second adjustment assembly, the first and second adjustment assemblies being independently actuatable from one another,

wherein the first adjustment assembly includes a ramp configured to slide transverse to the height dimension in response to actuation of the first adjustment assembly, so as to change the height dimension of the spinal implant in the first region, and wherein the second adjustment assembly operates in a different manner than the first adjustment assembly in response to actuation of the second adjustment assembly, so as to change the height dimension of the spinal implant in the second region.

2. The spinal implant according to claim 1 , wherein the first region is in a proximal region of the spinal implant, and the second region is in a distal region of the spinal implant.

3. The spinal implant according to claim 1 , wherein the ramp includes an upper portion and a lower portion that each taper from a proximal end towards a distal end of the ramp so as to define a wedge shape, and wherein the distal end of the ramp is disposed between the upper and lower bodies.

4. The spinal implant according to claim 3 , wherein the first adjustment assembly operates by sliding of the ramp towards a distal end of the implant in response to actuation of the first adjustment assembly, so as to cause the height dimension of the spinal implant in the first region to increase.

5. The spinal implant according to claim 4 , wherein the first region is in a proximal region of the spinal implant, and wherein sliding of the ramp to a fully advanced position towards the distal end of the implant results in a proximal end of the ramp being flush with a proximal end of each of the upper and lower bodies.

6. The spinal implant according to claim 3 , wherein the upper and lower portions of the ramp each include a channel.

7. The spinal implant according to claim 6 , wherein the first adjustment assembly further includes:

a first set of pins coupled to an inner surface of the upper body and positioned in engagement with the at least one channel of the upper portion of the ramp; and

a second set of pins coupled to an inner surface of the lower body and positioned in engagement with the at least one channel of the lower portion of the ramp,

such that the first and second sets of pins ride along the respective channel during sliding of the ramp.

8. The spinal implant according to claim 7 , wherein at least one of the channel of the upper and lower portions of the ramp defines an undulating surface.

9. The spinal implant according to claim 1 , wherein the second adjustment assembly includes a pivot linkage assembly including an upper pivot linkage pivotably connected to an inner surface of the upper body and a lower pivot linkage pivotably connected to an inner surface of the lower body, the upper and lower pivot linkages pivotably connected to each other, and wherein the second adjustment assembly operates by moving the upper and lower pivot linkages with respect to each other to change the height dimension of the spinal implant in the second region.

10. The spinal implant according to claim 9 , wherein the second adjustment assembly includes a curved plate having a curved distal surface movable into and out of contact with the pivot linkage assembly to effect movement of the upper and lower pivot linkages with respect to each other.

11. The spinal implant according to claim 10 , wherein the second adjustment assembly includes a threaded post including a distal end retained against a proximal surface of the curved plate, wherein axial movement of the threaded post moves the curved plate.

12. The spinal implant according to claim 11 , wherein the second adjustment assembly includes a bracket including a threaded opening and a pair of legs extending distally therefrom, wherein the threaded post is threadingly engaged with the threaded opening of the bracket and is axially movable therethrough, and wherein the curved plate is slidably disposed between the pair of legs of the bracket, and the upper and lower pivot linkages are pivotably connected to each other by a pin extending through the upper and lower pivot linkages and a distal end of the pair of legs of the bracket.

13. The spinal implant according to claim 9 , wherein the second adjustment assembly includes a threaded post including a distal end movable into and out of contact with the pivot linkage assembly to effect movement of the upper and lower pivot linkages with respect to each other.

14. The spinal implant according to claim 1 , wherein the ramp of the first adjustment assembly has a passageway extending therethrough.

15. The spinal implant according to claim 14 , wherein the ramp is configured to slide along a translation axis in response to actuation of the first adjustment assembly, and wherein the passageway is aligned along the translation axis.

16. The spinal implant according to claim 14 , wherein the passageway is configured to allow access to an actuator of the second adjustment assembly for actuating the second adjustment assembly.

17. The spinal implant according to claim 16 , wherein the actuator of the second adjustment assembly includes a threaded post configured to rotate about a longitudinal axis thereof during actuation of the second adjustment assembly.

18. The spinal implant according to claim 1 , wherein at least one of the outer surfaces of the upper body or the lower body includes a plurality of retaining features.

19. The spinal implant of claim 1 , wherein the second adjustment assembly includes a linkage, and wherein the second adjustment assembly operates by moving the linkage to change the height dimension of the spinal implant in the second region.
