Abstract

A treatment probe for treating an eye of a patient includes an elongate body that defines a handle and a treatment fiber that is housed within the elongate body. The treatment fiber is configured to deliver treatment light energy to the eye. A contact member is disposed on an end of the elongate body. The contact member has a contact surface for positioning on a surface of the eye, two side edges that are positioned on opposite sides of the contact surface, and a fluid channel. The contact surface conforms to the shape of the eye's sclera and the two side edges are shaped to direct fluid that is present on the surface of the eye toward the fluid channel when the contact member is moved laterally across the surface of the eye. The fluid aggregates within the fluid channel and contacts a distal end of the treatment fiber.

Claims (36)

1. A treatment probe for treating an eye of a patient, the treatment probe comprising:

an elongate body defining a handle having a proximal end and a distal end;

a treatment fiber coupled with the elongate body and configured for delivering treatment light energy to the eye;

a contact member disposed on an end of the elongate body, the contact member being configured for positioning on a surface of the eye; and

a fiber taper element that is coupled with the distal end of the treatment fiber, the fiber taper element having an egress diameter that is larger than an ingress diameter.

2. The treatment probe of claim 1 , wherein the ingress diameter is between about 50 and 100 μm and the egress diameter is between about 600 and 1000 μm.

3. The treatment probe of claim 1 , wherein a distal surface of the fiber taper is flat polished.

4. The treatment probe of claim 1 , wherein a ball shaped tip is formed in a distal end of the fiber taper.

5. The treatment probe of claim 1 , wherein the fiber taper is a separate component from the treatment fiber.

6. The treatment probe of claim 1 , wherein the contact member includes a fluid channel that is configured to aggregate fluid within the fluid channel from a surface of the eye so that the fluid contacts a distal end of the fiber taper.

7. The treatment probe of claim 6 , wherein the contact member includes a contact surface for positioning on the surface of the eye and two side edges that are positioned on opposite sides of the contact surface, wherein the contact surface conforms to a shape of the eye and the two side edges are shaped to direct fluid toward the fluid channel when the contact member is moved laterally across the surface of the eye.

8. The treatment probe of claim 6 , wherein the fluid channel has an axial depth of between 3 μm and 300 μm.

9. The treatment probe of claim 6 , wherein the contact member includes a reference structure that is alignable with a reference feature of the eye.

10. A treatment probe for treating an eye of a patient, the treatment probe comprising:

an elongate body defining a handle having a proximal end and a distal end;

a treatment fiber coupled with the elongate body and configured for delivering treatment light energy to the eye; and

a contact member disposed on an end of the elongate body, the contact member being configured for positioning on a surface of the eye;

wherein a distal end of the treatment fiber has an angle α relative to a plane that is normal to an axis of the treatment fiber, the angled distal end of the treatment fiber being configured to bend the treatment light energy toward the eye at an angle θ relative to the axis of the treatment fiber so that the treatment light energy is delivered to target tissue within the eye.

11. The treatment probe of claim 10 , wherein the angle α is between 10 and 80 degrees.

12. The treatment probe of claim 11 , wherein the angle α is between 20 and 70 degrees.

13. The treatment probe of claim 10 , wherein a distal end of the contact member includes two edges that contact opposing edges of the treatment fiber's angled distal end to prevent the treatment fiber from protruding beyond the distal end of the contact member.

14. The treatment probe of claim 10 , wherein the distal end of the treatment fiber is oriented such then when the contact member is positioned on the surface of the eye, the distal end of the treatment fiber is angled away from the surface of the eye.

15. The treatment probe of claim 10 , wherein the contact member includes a fluid channel that is configured to aggregate fluid within the fluid channel from a surface of the eye so that the fluid contacts a distal end of the fiber taper.

16. The treatment probe of claim 15 , wherein the contact member includes a contact surface for positioning on the surface of the eye and two side edges that are positioned on opposite sides of the contact surface, wherein the contact surface conforms to a shape of the eye and the two side edges are shaped to direct fluid toward the fluid channel when the contact member is moved laterally across the surface of the eye.

17. The treatment probe of claim 15 , wherein the fluid channel has an axial depth of between 3 μm and 300 μm.

18. A method of treating an eye of a patient, the method comprising:

providing a treatment probe comprising:

an elongate body;

a treatment fiber;

a contact member that is disposed on an end of the elongate body; and

a fiber taper element that is coupled with a distal end of the treatment fiber, the fiber taper element having an egress diameter that is larger than an ingress diameter;

positioning the contact member on a surface of the eye; and

moving the contact member laterally across the surface of the eye; and

delivering light energy from a distal end of the fiber taper.

19. The method of claim 18 , wherein the contact member includes a fluid channel, and wherein as the contact member is moved laterally across the surface of the eye, fluid is aggregated within the fluid channel and into contact with the distal end of the fiber taper.

20. The method of claim 18 , wherein delivering the light energy from the distal end of the fiber taper includes delivering a plurality of pulses of the light energy.
