Abstract

A system includes: a refrigerant compressor including an electric motor; a single printed circuit board (PCB); a drive that is disposed on the single PCB and that includes switches that control the application of power from a battery to the electric motor; and one or more processors disposed on the single PCB, the one or more processors configured to: determine a speed command for the refrigerant compressor based on one or more operating parameters; and actuate the switches of the drive based on the speed command.

Claims (40)

1. A system, comprising:

a refrigerant compressor including an electric motor;

a single printed circuit board (PCB);

a drive that is disposed on the single PCB and that includes switches that control the application of power from a battery to the electric motor;

one or more processors disposed on the single PCB, the one or more processors configured to:

determine a speed command for the refrigerant compressor based on one or more operating parameters; and

actuate the switches of the drive based on the speed command; and

a first interface disposed on the single PCB, the first interface having a plurality of input and output pins, the first interface being one of a male type interface and a female type interface, the first interface configured to receive first power from the battery via a first one of the input pins, to receive a second power from the battery via a second one of the input pins, to be connected to a network bus, to receive the one or more operating parameters via the network bus, and to receive an output of an ignition sensor that indicates whether a vehicle is ON or OFF via a third one of the input pins.

2. The system of claim 1 wherein the one or more processors are further configured to communicate via the network bus and the first interface using the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) J1939 communication standard.

3. The system of claim 1 wherein the one or more operating parameters include at least one of (a) a temperature of the system measured by a temperature sensor and (b) a pressure of the system measured by a pressure sensor.

4. The system of claim 1 wherein the one or more processors are further configured to actuate an actuator of the system via the network bus and the first interface.

5. The system of claim 4 further comprising a control module that is not disposed on the single PCB, that is configured to communicate via the network bus, and that is configured to actuate the actuator in response to receipt of signals from the one or more processors via the network bus.

6. The system of claim 5 wherein the actuator is one of a solenoid, a switch, a damper, a blower, an electronic expansion valve, and a fan.

7. The system of claim 1 wherein one or more processors and the drive do not communicate using the MODBUS communication protocol.

8. The system of claim 1 wherein the system is configured to cool a passenger cabin of a vehicle.

9. The system of claim 1 further comprising:

a second single PCB that is separate from the single PCB;

a second interface disposed on the second single PCB; and

a control module disposed on the single PCB, the control module configured to:

receive input from one or more input devices via the second interface;

control one or more output devices via the second interface; and

connect to a network bus via the second interface.

10. The system of claim 9 wherein the control module and the one or more processors are configured to communicate via the network bus.

11. The system of claim 10 wherein the control module and the one or more processors are configured to communicate via the network bus using the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) J1939 communication standard.

12. A single printed circuit board, comprising:

a drive that is disposed on the single PCB and that includes switches configured to control the application of power from a battery to an electric motor of a refrigerant compressor of a cooling system;

one or more processors disposed on the single PCB, the one or more processors configured to:

determine a speed command for the refrigerant compressor based on one or more operating parameters;

actuate the switches of the drive based on the speed command; and

an interface disposed on the single PCB, the interface having a plurality of input and output pins, the interface being one of a male type interface and a female type interface, the interface and configured to receive a first power from the battery via a first one of the input pins, to receive a second power from the battery via a second one of the input pins, to be connected to a network bus, to receive the one or more operating parameters via the network bus, to receive an output of an ignition sensor that indicates whether a vehicle is ON or OFF via a third one of the input pins.

13. A method, comprising:

by one or more processors disposed on a single printed circuit board (PCB), determining a speed command for a refrigerant compressor based on one or more operating parameters;

by the one or more processors, actuating switches of a drive based on the speed command,

wherein the drive is disposed on the single PCB and includes the switches, wherein the switches are configured to control the application of power from a battery to an electric motor of the refrigerant compressor of a cooling system;

by an interface disposed on the single PCB and having a plurality of input and output pins, receiving a first power from the battery via a first one of the input pins, the interface being one of a male type interface and a female type interface;

by the interface, receiving a second power from the battery via a second one of the input pins;

by the interface, receiving an output of an ignition sensor that indicates whether a vehicle is ON or OFF via a third one of the input pins;

by the one or more processors, communicating via a network bus via the interface; and

by the one or more processors, receiving the one or more operating parameters via the network bus and the interface.

14. The method of claim 13 wherein the communicating includes, by the one or more processors, communicating via the network bus using the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) J1939 communication standard.
