Abstract

Various embodiments for enforcing safe operation of machinery performing an activity in a three-dimensional (3D) workspace includes computationally generating a 3D spatial representation of the workspace; computationally mapping 3D regions of the workspace corresponding to space occupied by the machinery and a human; and based thereon, restricting operation of the machinery in accordance with a safety protocol during physical performance of the activity. Limited-access zones are defined within which the presence of a human will not affect operation of the machinery.

Claims (28)

1. A safety system for enforcing safe operation of machinery performing an activity in a three-dimensional (3D) workspace, the system comprising:

a computer memory for storing (i) a model of the machinery and its permitted movements and (ii) a safety protocol specifying speed restrictions of the machinery in proximity to a human and a minimum separation distance between the machinery and a human; and

a processor configured to:

computationally generate a 3D spatial representation of the workspace;

computationally map, via a mapping module, a first 3D region of the workspace corresponding to space occupied by the machinery within the workspace augmented by a 3D envelope around the machinery spanning all movements executed by the machinery during performance of the activity;

computationally define a second 3D region of the workspace corresponding to space occupied or potentially occupied by a human within the workspace augmented by a 3D envelope around the human corresponding to anticipated movements of the human within the workspace during the interval; and

computationally define a third 3D region of the workspace within which a fixed object prevents a proximity between a human and the machinery from being less than the minimum separation distance, wherein the processor is configured to, during physical performance of the activity, (a) restrict operation of the machinery in accordance with the safety protocol based on proximity between the first and second regions and (b) not restrict operation of the machinery when a human is in the third region.

2. The safety system of claim 1 , wherein operation of the machinery is not restricted even if a minimum distance between the first and second 3D regions is below the minimum separation distance.

3. The safety system of claim 1 , wherein the second region is defined at least in part by a current direction, velocity and acceleration of the human.

4. The safety system of claim 3 , wherein the second region is further defined at least in part based on a kinematic model of human motion.

5. The safety system of claim 3 , wherein the second region is further defined at least in part by a worst-case speed.

6. The safety system of claim 1 , wherein the third region is defined manually via an interface.

7. The safety system of claim 1 , wherein the third region is defined computationally based on the 3D spatial representation of the workspace including the fixed object.

8. The safety system of claim 1 , wherein the second region is not defined when the human is within the third region.

9. A method of enforcing safe operation of machinery performing an activity in a three-dimensional (3D) workspace, the method comprising the steps of:

storing (i) a computational model of the machinery and its permitted movements and (ii) a safety protocol specifying speed restrictions of the machinery in proximity to a human and a minimum separation distance between the machinery and a human;

computationally generating a 3D spatial representation of the workspace;

computationally mapping a first 3D region of the workspace corresponding to space occupied by the machinery within the workspace augmented by a computationally defined 3D envelope around the machinery spanning all movements executed by the machinery during performance of the activity;

computationally defining a second 3D region of the workspace corresponding to space occupied or potentially occupied by a human within the workspace augmented by a computationally defined 3D envelope around the human corresponding to anticipated movements of the human within the workspace during the interval;

computationally defining a third 3D region of the workspace within which a fixed object prevents a proximity between a human and the machinery from being less than the minimum separation distance; and

during physical performance of the activity, (a) restricting operation of the machinery in accordance with the safety protocol based on proximity between the first and second regions and (b) not restricting operation of the machinery when a human is in the third region.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein operation of the machinery is not restricted even if a minimum distance between the first and second 3D regions is below the minimum separation distance.

11. The method of claim 9 , wherein the second region is computationally defined at least in part by a current direction, velocity and acceleration of the human.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the second region is further defined at least in part based on a kinematic model of human motion.

13. The method of claim 11 , wherein the second region is further defined at least in part by a worst-case speed.

14. The method of claim 9 , wherein the third region is defined manually via an interface.

15. The method of claim 9 , wherein the third region is defined computationally based on the 3D spatial representation of the workspace including the fixed object.

16. The method of claim 9 , wherein the second region is not defined when the human is within the third region.
