Abstract

Controlling camera sensor operating temperatures in an autonomous vehicle, including: monitoring a temperature of a camera sensor of an autonomous vehicle; and modify, by a thermal control module thermally coupled to the camera sensor, the temperature of the camera sensor to conform to one or more operational constraints.

Claims (34)

1 . A method of controlling camera sensor operating temperatures in an autonomous vehicle, comprising:

monitoring a temperature of a camera sensor of an autonomous vehicle; and

4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the one or more operational constraints comprises one or more operational temperature thresholds, and wherein modifying the temperature of the camera sensor comprises modifying the temperature of the camera sensor until the temperature of the camera sensor satisfies the one or more operational temperature thresholds.

5 . The method of claim 1 , wherein another camera sensor is thermally coupled to the thermal control module.

6 . The method of claim 5 , wherein the one or more operational constraints comprises a maximum temperature differential between the camera sensor and the other camera sensor, and wherein modifying the temperature of the camera sensor comprises modifying one or more of the temperature of the camera sensor or a temperature of the other camera sensor until a temperature differential between the camera sensor and the other camera sensor falls below the maximum temperature differential.

7 . The method of claim 5 , wherein the camera sensor and the other camera sensor comprise a camera sensor pair of a plurality of camera sensor pairs each thermally coupled to a respective thermal control module of a plurality of thermal control modules.

8 . A thermal control module for controlling camera sensor operating temperatures in an autonomous vehicle, comprising:

one or more camera sensor interfaces each comprising a thermal sensor;

a thermal control element; and

wherein the thermal control module is configured to perform steps comprising:

monitoring, by the thermal sensor, a temperature of a camera sensor of an autonomous vehicle; and

modify, by the thermal control element, the temperature of the camera sensor to conform to one or more operational constraints.

9 . The thermal control module of claim 8 , wherein modifying the temperature of the camera sensor comprises cooling the camera sensor.

10 . The thermal control module of claim 8 , wherein modifying the temperature of the camera sensor comprises heating the camera sensor.

11 . The thermal control module of claim 8 , wherein the one or more operational constraints comprises one or more operational temperature thresholds, and wherein modifying the temperature of the camera sensor comprises modifying the temperature of the camera sensor until the temperature of the camera sensor satisfies the one or more operational temperature thresholds.

12 . The thermal control module of claim 8 , wherein another camera sensor is thermally coupled to the thermal control module.

13 . The thermal control module of claim 12 , wherein the one or more operational constraints comprises a maximum temperature differential between the camera sensor and the other camera sensor, and wherein modifying the temperature of the camera sensor comprises modifying one or more of the temperature of the camera sensor or a temperature of the other camera sensor until a temperature differential between the camera sensor and the other camera sensor falls below the maximum temperature differential.

14 . The thermal control module of claim 12 , wherein the camera sensor and the other camera sensor comprise a camera sensor pair of a plurality of camera sensor pairs each thermally coupled to a respective thermal control module of a plurality of thermal control modules.

15 . An autonomous vehicle, comprising:

a camera sensor;
