Abstract

A tonneau cover system, comprising: (a) a retractable tonneau cover having a plurality of interconnected panels; (b) a first retainer secured to a first sidewall of a cargo box of a vehicle; and (c) a second retainer secured to an opposing second sidewall of the cargo box, wherein the first retainer and the second retainer are substantially parallel to each other so that the tonneau cover spans between the first retainer and the second retainer; and wherein the plurality of panels each include a bearing positioned within the first retainer to guide the tonneau cover in a direction substantially parallel to a longitudinal axis of the first retainer.

Claims (28)

1. A tonneau cover system, comprising:

(a) a retractable tonneau cover having a panel;

(b) a first retainer having a supporting portion that supports the tonneau cover, wherein the supporting portion includes a rail; and

(c) a second retainer that includes a sliding contact surface secured to a supporting portion of the second retainer to support the tonneau cover; and

wherein the panel includes a bearing having a groove, and the rail of the supporting portion of the first retainer is at least partially positioned within the groove so that the tonneau cover is guided along the rail,

wherein the tonneau cover system includes a lock rail mounted along an outer surface of the supporting portion of either the first retainer or the second retainer, the lock rail is free of interference with an inner surface of the supporting portion to prevent interference between the lock rail and the tonneau cover.

2. The tonneau cover system of claim 1 , wherein the first retainer prevents movement of the tonneau cover in a direction other than a direction substantially parallel to a longitudinal axis of the first retainer.

3. The tonneau cover of claim 2 , wherein the bearing rests upon the rail of the first retainer and/or the second retainer is free of a rail.

4. The tonneau cover of claim 3 , wherein the sliding contact surface supports the tonneau cover as the tonneau cover is guided along the rail.

5. The tonneau cover of claim 4 , wherein a first end of the panel includes the bearing and is positioned within the first retainer, and a second opposing end of the panel is positioned within the second retainer and is free of a bearing.

6. The tonneau cover of claim 5 , wherein the first retainer and the second retainer include an engaging portion having a seal that contacts the tonneau cover.

7. The tonneau cover of claim 1 , wherein the rail is spaced apart from a surface of the supporting portion by a spacer and/or wherein the bearing is secured to the panel so that the bearing and the panel are substantially coaxial.

8. The tonneau cover of claim 1 , wherein the lock rail engages a lock mounted to the tonneau cover.

9. The tonneau cover of claim 8 , wherein the lock includes a finger that is guided along a channel of the lock rail so that the lock moves simultaneously with the tonneau cover.

10. The tonneau cover of claim 1 , wherein the supporting portion of the first retainer includes a second rail that opposes the rail.

11. The tonneau cover of claim 9 , wherein the lock is mounted to the panel so that the finger of the lock is positioned beneath the panel.

12. The tonneau cover of claim 2 , wherein the rail is integrally formed with the supporting portion.

13. The tonneau cover of claim 1 , wherein the tonneau cover includes a plurality of interconnected panels each having a bearing.

14. The tonneau cover of claim 12 , wherein the rail extends along a length of the first retainer substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis of the first retainer.

15. The tonneau cover of claim 14 , wherein the first retainer is adapted to be secured to a sidewall of a cargo box of a vehicle.

16. The tonneau cover of claim 15 , wherein the second retainer is adapted to be secured to an opposing second sidewall of the cargo box so that the tonneau cover spans across the cargo box of the vehicle.

17. A tonneau cover system for covering a cargo area of a vehicle, the tonneau cover system comprising:

a first retainer configured for attachment to a first side wall of the cargo area of the vehicle, the first retainer having a first supporting portion that includes one rail or a pair of opposing rails extending at least partially along a length of the first supporting portion;

a second retainer configured for attachment to a second side wall of the cargo area of the vehicle, the second retainer having a second supporting portion that is defined between a top wall, a bottom wall, and a side wall that connects the top wall and the bottom wall, the second supporting portion has an open end that opposes the side wall and that is arranged to face an inside of the cargo area; and

a tonneau cover having a panel, the panel has a first lateral side that includes a roller or bearing, wherein the roller or bearing is configured to be placed on the one rail or in between the pair of opposing rails of the first supporting portion, the roller or bearing is configured to slide or roll along the one rail or in between the pair of opposing rails when the panel is moved; the panel has a second lateral side that opposes the first lateral side, the second lateral side is free of a bearing or roller, the second lateral side is configured to be received through the open end of the second supporting portion and into the second supporting portion so that at least a top surface and an opposing bottom surface of the panel are located in between the top wall and the bottom wall of the second supporting portion, the second lateral side of the panel is configured to slide at least partially along a length of the second retainer when the panel is moved.

18. The tonneau cover system according to claim 17 , wherein the second retainer comprises a cover spacer that the top surface or the bottom surface of the panel are configured to engage.

19. The tonneau cover system according to claim 17 , wherein the tonneau cover system includes a lock rail mounted below the first supporting portion and/or the second supporting portion and the panel includes a lock that engages the lock rail.

20. The tonneau cover system according to claim 17 , wherein the tonneau cover system comprises a canister into which the panel is configured to be received when the tonneau cover is moved into an open position.
