DISPLAY INSERTS, OVERLAYS, AND GRAPHICAL USER INTERFACES FOR MULTIMEDIA SYSTEMS
A disclosed digital media device operational at user premises to receive media signals from a media source for presentation via endpoint devices such as a television display. The digital media device can include gateway and digital media management functionality and can be referred to as a gateway and digital media device. The device offers application services obtained over a wide area network and a user premises network. The digital media device may form a composite signal from the media signal and application service information, for example, for a composite audio and/or video signal for television type presentation to the user. The digital media device may receive a selection signal based on the presentation, for transmission to the application service provider device or to the media source. The media device also offers a GUI presenting a moveable arrangement of icons for selectively accessing application services.

48 . A digital media device, comprising:
at least one processor; and
memory having instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, configures the digital media device to:
communicate with a management center over a network for enabling user management of one or more subscriptions;
provide access to a plurality of icons representing media applications that enable access to media based on a received user input, wherein the media applications include—
a locally stored first media application associated with first media available from a first service provider, the first media application configured to manage locally stored first data for authorizing access to the first media application, the first media, or both before sending a request to the first service provider, wherein the first data includes authentication/authorization data and/or a key associated with the first service provider, and
a locally stored second media application associated with second media available from a second service provider, the second media application configured to manage locally stored second data for authorizing access to the second media application, the second media, or both before sending a request to the second service provider, wherein the second data includes authentication/authorization data and/or a key associated with the second service provider.
49 . The digital media device of claim 48 , wherein the digital media device is configured to:
manage at least one first subscription for the first media application independent of at least one second subscription for the second media application, and
manage accessibility for the first media application based on the at least one first subscription.
50 . The digital media device of claim 48 , wherein the digital media device is configured to
receive user input via a remote control;
display content media for one of the media applications selected according to the user input; and
deliver media, selected via the remote control, from the digital media device to the electronic display.
51 . The digital media device of claim 48 , wherein the memory has instructions that, when executed, configure the digital media device for speech detection.
52 . The digital media device of claim 48 , wherein the memory has instructions that, when executed, configure the digital media device for authentication by one of the first or second service providers.
53 . The digital media device of claim 48 , wherein the first data is managed via communication with the first service provider for authorizing streaming.
54 . The digital media device of claim 48 , wherein the first media application is configured to enable the first service provider to authorize a streaming service based at least in part on the first data and the authorization is independent of service authorization, based at least in part on the second data, by the second service provider.
55 . The digital media device of claim 48 , wherein the instructions, when executed by the at least one processor, provide user premises side authentication of one or more services with one or more local endpoint devices.
56 . The digital media device of claim 48 , wherein the digital media device is integrated with a television system.
57 . The digital media device of claim 48 , wherein the digital media device is communicatively coupled to a display screen.
58 . A digital media device, comprising:
at least one processor; and
memory having instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, configures the digital media device to:
communicate with remove devices over a network for enabling user management of one or more subscription-based services;
provide access to media applications that enable access to media based on a received user input, wherein the media applications include—
a locally stored first media application associated with first media available from a first service provider, the first media application manages at least one of first authentication information or a first key that is communicated with the first service provider to authorize access to the first media application, the first media, or both, wherein the digital media device locally stores the at least one of first authentication information or first key,
in response to the authentication, sending a request for streaming the selected first media from the first service provider to the digital media device,
a locally stored second media application associated with second media available from a second service provider, the second media application manages at least one of second authentication information or second key that is communicated with the second service provider to authorize access to the second media application, the second media, or both, wherein the digital media device locally stores the at least one of second authentication information or second key, and
in response to the authentication, sending a request for streaming the selected second media from the second service provider to the digital media device.
59 . The digital media device of claim 58 , wherein the digital media device is programmed to display, via a display, a composite image including a media image and icons representing a plurality of sources of media, wherein the digital media device is configured to establish bi-directional communication with each source of media.
60 . The digital media device of claim 58 , wherein the digital media device is programmed to:
verify a subscription status for accessing the first media application; and
controlling access to the first media application, the first media, or both based on the subscription status.
