Abstract

A method and systems for identifying communicators as wanted or unwanted based on communications from such communicators, the method comprising determining communications from phone numbers as being unwanted by analyzing communication content features of communications associated with unwanted communicators, identifying telecommunications carriers that acquired the phone numbers, computing scores for the telecommunications carriers based on an amount of the determined unwanted communications from the phone numbers are unwanted, intercepting an inbound communication from a given phone number, identifying the given phone number is associated with a given one of the telecommunications carriers, and configuring handling of communications from the phone number based on a score of the given telecommunications carrier.

Claims (47)

1. A system for identifying communicators in a communication environment as wanted or unwanted, the system comprising:

a directory server comprising memory and a processing device configured to:

determine communications from phone numbers as being unwanted by analyzing communication content features of communications associated with unwanted communicators,

identify telecommunications carriers that acquired the phone numbers,

organize the phone numbers into number blocks, and

compute scores for the telecommunications carriers and the number blocks based on communication behaviors of the phone numbers; and

a communication screening system configured to:

intercept an inbound communication from a given phone number associated with a given origination communication device,

identify the given phone number is associated with a given one of the telecommunications carriers and number blocks; and

configure handling of communications from the phone number based on scores of the given telecommunications carrier and number block.

2. The system of claim 1 wherein the directory server determines the scores of the telecommunications carriers and number blocks based on a monitoring of traffic or reported instances of positive and negative communication behaviors associated with the telecommunications carrier and number block.

3. The system of claim 1 wherein the communication screening system prompts for a response from the given phone number to record a digital sample.

4. The system of claim 3 wherein the communication screening system extracts data from the inbound communication to record the digital sample.

5. The system of claim 1 wherein the inbound communication includes a voice message.

6. The system of claim 1 wherein the communication screening system configures the handling of communications by at least one of suppression of visual or auditory indication of a communication, blocking the phone number, playing a message that indicates unavailability to the origination communication device, and ending a communication connection with the origination communication device.

7. The system of claim 1 wherein the communication screening system is configured to block ranges of numbers or matched patterns based on the phone number.

8. The system of claim 1 wherein the directory server compares the inbound communication to fingerprints stored in a database.

9. The system of claim 8 wherein the fingerprints comprise sequences of characters that are representative of content of known communications.

10. The system of claim 1 wherein the directory server dynamically computes the scores for the telecommunications carriers and number blocks by tracking percentages of wanted and unwanted communications related to the telecommunications carriers and number blocks.

11. The system of claim 1 wherein the directory server further:

detects spoofing of the numbers associated with the communications associated with the unwanted communicators; and

adjusts the scores for the telecommunications carriers based on the detection of spoofing.

12. A system for identifying communicators in a communication environment as wanted or unwanted, the system comprising:

a processor; and

a memory having executable instructions stored thereon that when executed by the processor cause the processor to:

determine communications from phone numbers as being wanted or unwanted by analyzing communication content features of communications associated with wanted or unwanted communicators,

identify telecommunications carriers that acquired the phone numbers,

compute scores for the telecommunications carriers based on an amount of the determined wanted and unwanted communications from the phone numbers,

compute scores for number blocks based on the amount of determined wanted and unwanted communications from the number blocks,

intercept an inbound communication from a given phone number associated with a given origination communication device,

identify the given phone number is associated with a given one of the telecommunications carriers and number blocks, and

configure handling of communications from the phone number based on scores of the given telecommunications carrier and number block.

13. A method, in a communication environment including a data processing system comprising a processor and a memory, for identifying communicators as wanted or unwanted, the method comprising:

determining, by the data processing system, communications from phone numbers as being unwanted by analyzing communication content features of communications associated with unwanted communicators;

identifying, by the data processing system, telecommunications carriers that acquired the phone numbers;

organizing, by the data processing system, the phone numbers into number blocks;

computing, by the data processing system, scores for the telecommunications carriers and the number blocks based on an amount of the determined wanted and unwanted communications from the phone numbers;

intercepting, by the data processing system, an inbound communication from a given phone number associated with a given origination communication device;

identifying, by the data processing system, the given phone number is associated with a given one of the telecommunications carriers and number blocks; and

configuring, by the data processing system, handling of communications from the phone number based on scores of the given telecommunications carrier and number block.

14. The method of claim 13 further comprising determining the score of the telecommunications carrier based on a monitoring of traffic or reported instances of positive and negative communication behaviors by the telecommunications carrier and number block.

15. The method of claim 14 further comprising extracting data from the inbound communication to record the digital sample.

16. The method of claim 13 further comprising prompting for a response from the given phone number to record a digital sample.

17. The method of claim 13 wherein the inbound communication includes a voice message.

18. The method of claim 13 further comprising computing the scores for the telecommunications carriers and number blocks by tracking percentages of wanted unwanted communications from the telecommunications carriers and number blocks.

19. The method of claim 13 further comprising configuring the handling of communications by at least one of suppression of visual or auditory indication of a communication blocking the phone number, playing a message that indicates unavailability to the origination communication device, and ending a communication connection with the origination communication device.

20. The method of claim 13 further comprising blocking sets of number ranges or patterns based on the phone number.
