Abstract

An importer-exporter includes at least a first interface that receives channel packets and a stream of emergency action signal (EAS) packets. The channel packets include channel content for multiple media channels, and the stream of EAS packets include first EAS notification content from a first EAS encoder. The first EAS notification content is associated with one or more particular media channels. A processor and associated memory are configured to implement a switching module that includes a login module and a multiplexer. The login module monitors the stream of EAS packets, and selects either channel content or first notification content for inclusion in broadcasts of each of the media channels based on the monitored stream of EAS packets. Thea multiplexer transmits the content selected by the login module for inclusion in the broadcasts of each of the plurality of media channels.

Claims (76)

1. An importer-exporter comprising:

at least a first interface configured to receive:

channel packets including channel content for a plurality of media channels; and

a stream of emergency action signal (EAS) packets including first EAS notification content from a first EAS encoder, wherein the first EAS notification content is associated with one or more particular media channels of the plurality of media channels;

a processor and associated memory configured to implement a switching module including:

a login module configured to:

monitor the stream of EAS packets; and

select, based on the stream of EAS packets, either channel content or first notification content for inclusion in broadcasts of each of the plurality of media channels; and

a multiplexer configured to transmit content selected by the login module for inclusion in the broadcasts of each of the plurality of media channels.

2. The importer-exporter of claim 1 , wherein the login module is further configured to:

determine whether a device transmitting the stream of EAS packets is authorized to insert content into a broadcast; and

log-in the device transmitting the stream of EAS packets to the importer-exporter.

3. The importer-exporter of claim 2 , wherein the login module is further configured to:

select the content included in the stream of EAS packets in response to determining that the device transmitting the stream of EAS packets is logged in to the importer-exporter.

4. The importer-exporter of claim 1 , further comprising:

a transport encoder configured to receive the content selected by the login module; and

bond the content selected by the login module into a broadcast payload.

5. The importer-exporter of claim 4 , further comprising:

a network interface configured to receive the broadcast payload from the transport encoder; and

transmit the broadcast payload to a broadcast transmitter.

6. The importer-exporter of claim 1 , wherein the switching module is further configured to:

generate an alarm message in response to determining that a heartbeat signal has not been received from one or more EAS encoders within a threshold period of time.

7. The importer-exporter of claim 1 , further comprising:

at least a second interface configured to receive legacy EAS signals from at least one legacy EAS encoder, wherein each of the legacy EAS signals include:

a legacy EAS control signal associated with a particular media channel; and

second EAS notification content associated with the particular media channel; and

wherein the multiplexer is further configured to switch between transmitting the content selected by the login module and transmitting the second EAS notification content as indicated by the legacy EAS control signal.

8. A method comprising:

receiving channel packets including channel content for a plurality of media channels;

receiving a stream of emergency action signal (EAS) packets including first EAS notification content from a first EAS encoder, wherein the first EAS notification content is associated with one or more particular media channels of the plurality of media channels;

monitoring the stream of EAS packets;

selecting, based on the stream of EAS packets, either channel content or first notification content for inclusion in broadcasts of each of the plurality of media channels; and

transmitting content selected for inclusion in the broadcasts of each of the plurality of media channels.

9. The method of claim 8 , further comprising:

determining whether a device transmitting the stream of EAS packets is authorized to insert content into a broadcast; and

log-in the device transmitting the stream of EAS packets.

10. The method of claim 9 , further comprising:

selecting the content included in the stream of EAS packets in response to determining that the device transmitting the stream of EAS packets is logged in.

11. The method of claim 8 , further comprising:

bonding the content selected for inclusion in the broadcasts of each of the plurality of media channels into a broadcast payload.

12. The method of claim 11 , further comprising:

transmitting the broadcast payload to a broadcast transmitter.

13. The method of claim 8 , further comprising:

generating an alarm message in response to determining that a heartbeat signal has not been received from one or more EAS encoders within a threshold period of time.

14. The method of claim 8 , further comprising:

receiving legacy EAS signals from at least one legacy EAS encoder, wherein each of the legacy EAS signals include:

a legacy EAS control signal associated with a particular media channel; and

second EAS notification content associated with the particular media channel; and

switching between transmitting content selected based on the stream of EAS packets, and transmitting the second EAS notification content as indicated by the legacy EAS control signal.

15. A system comprising:

an importer-exporter including:

at least a first interface configured to receive:

channel packets including channel content for a plurality of media channels; and

a stream of emergency action signal (EAS) packets including first EAS notification content from a first EAS encoder, wherein the first EAS notification content is associated with one or more particular media channels of the plurality of media channels;

a processor and associated memory configured to implement a switching module including:

a login module configured to:

monitor the stream of EAS packets; and

select, based on the stream of EAS packets, either channel content or first notification content for inclusion in broadcasts of each of the plurality of media channels;

a multiplexer configured to transmit content selected by the login module for inclusion in the broadcasts of each of the plurality of media channels; and

a broadcast transmitter configured to transmit a broadcast payload including content selected by the switching module.

16. The system of claim 15 , wherein the login module is further configured to:

determine whether a device transmitting the stream of EAS packets is authorized to insert content into a broadcast; and

log-in the device transmitting the stream of EAS packets to the importer-exporter.

17. The system of claim 16 , wherein the login module is further configured to:

select the content included in the stream of EAS packets in response to determining that the device transmitting the stream of EAS packets is logged in to the importer-exporter.

18. The system of claim 15 , further comprising:

a transport encoder configured to receive the content selected by the login module; and

bond the content selected by the login module into a broadcast payload.

19. The system of claim 18 , further comprising:

a network interface configured to receive the broadcast payload from the transport encoder; and

transmit the broadcast payload to a broadcast transmitter.

20. The system of claim 19 , further comprising:

at least a second interface configured to receive legacy EAS signals from at least one legacy EAS encoder, wherein each of the legacy EAS signals include:

a legacy EAS control signal associated with a particular media channel; and

second EAS notification content associated with the particular media channel; and

wherein the multiplexer is further configured to switch between transmitting the content selected by the login module and transmitting the second EAS notification content as indicated by the legacy EAS control signal.
