Abstract

A fastener cartridge can include, one, a cartridge body comprising a deck and a plurality of fastener cavities and, two, a plurality of fasteners positioned in the fastener cavities. The cartridge body can further comprise extensions extending from the deck having different sizes and/or configurations. The extensions can control the flow of tissue relative to the deck and/or support the fasteners as they are ejected from the fastener cavities.

Claims (47)

1 . A surgical staple cartridge, comprising:

a cartridge body including a proximal end, a distal end, and a longitudinal axis extending between said proximal end and said distal end, said cartridge body comprising:

a deck comprising a tissue supporting surface;

a staple cavity defined in said deck, wherein said staple cavity comprises a first lateral width defined along a plane extending perpendicular to said longitudinal axis; and

a projection extending from said tissue supporting surface and at least partially surrounding said staple cavity, wherein said projection defines a slot that opens into said staple cavity, wherein said slot comprises a second lateral width defined along said plane, and wherein said first lateral width is greater than said second lateral width;

a staple removably stored in said staple cavity, wherein said staple comprises a crown and legs extending from said crown;

a staple driver movable from an unfired position to a fired position during a staple firing stroke to eject said staple from said staple cavity, wherein said slot at said longitudinal position supports one of said legs when said staple is ejected from said staple cavity;

a sled movable from a proximal position to a distal position during said firing stroke, wherein said sled causes said staple driver to move from said unfired position to said fired position when said sled moves from said proximal position to said distal position.

2 . The surgical staple cartridge of claim 1 , wherein said cartridge body further comprises a longitudinal slot and a detent extending inwardly into said longitudinal slot, wherein said body portion of said sled comprises a groove, and wherein said groove contacts said detent to releasably engage said body portion with said cartridge body.

3 . The surgical staple cartridge of claim 1 , wherein said projection comprises a first portion and a second portion, and wherein said first portion extends higher from said tissue supporting surface than said second portion.

4 . The surgical staple cartridge of claim 1 , wherein said staple cavity includes a proximal end and a distal end, wherein said projection is a first projection, wherein said first projection partially surrounds said proximal end of said staple cavity, wherein said cartridge body further comprises a second projection extending from said tissue supporting surface and partially surrounds said distal end of said staple cavity.

5 . The surgical staple cartridge of claim 4 , wherein said slot is a first slot, wherein said second projection includes a second slot defined therein, and wherein said second slot supports a different one of said staple legs when said staple is ejected from said staple cavity.

6 . The surgical staple cartridge of claim 1 , wherein said slot is positioned above said staple cavity.

7 . The surgical staple cartridge of claim 6 , wherein said projection comprises a first inner surface and a second inner surface in a facing relationship with said first inner surface, and wherein first inner surface and said second inner surface define said slot.

8 . The surgical staple cartridge of claim 7 , wherein said first inner surface and said second inner surface contact said one of said legs when said staple is ejected from said staple cavity.

9 . The surgical staple cartridge of claim 1 , wherein said sled comprises:

a ramp including a proximal end and a distal end, wherein said ramp contacts said staple driver to move said staple driver from said unfired position to said fired position when said sled moves from said proximal position to said distal position;

a body portion releasably engageable with said cartridge body when said sled is in said proximal position, wherein said body portion releases from said engagement with said cartridge body during said firing stroke; and

a nose extending distally from said body portion, wherein said nose includes a distal portion extending distally with respect to all other portions of said sled.

10 . A surgical staple cartridge, comprising:

a cartridge body including a proximal end, a distal end, and a longitudinal axis extending between said proximal end and said distal end, said cartridge body comprising:

a deck comprising a tissue supporting surface;

a plurality of staple cavities defined in said deck; and

a plurality of projections extending upwardly from said tissue supporting surface, wherein each projection of said plurality of projections at least partially surrounds one of said plurality staple cavities, wherein each said projection includes a slot that defines an opening into the corresponding staple cavity, wherein a lateral cross section of each said opening extending perpendicular to the longitudinal axis widens moving downwardly from said slot toward said cavity;

a plurality of staples removably stored in said staple cavities, wherein said staple of said plurality of staple cavities comprises a crown and legs extending from said crown;

a plurality of staple drivers movable from an unfired position to a fired position during a staple firing stroke to eject said staples from said staple cavities, wherein each said slot supports one of said legs of one of said staples when said staples are ejected from said staple cavities;

a sled movable from a proximal position to a distal position during said firing stroke, wherein said sled causes said staple drivers to move from said unfired position to said fired position as said sled moves from said proximal position to said distal position.

11 . The surgical staple cartridge of claim 10 , wherein said cartridge body further comprises a longitudinal slot and a detent extending inwardly into said longitudinal slot, wherein said body portion comprises a groove, and wherein said groove contacts said detent to releasably engage said body portion with said cartridge body.

12 . The surgical staple cartridge of claim 10 , wherein each projection of said plurality of projections comprises a first portion and a second portion, and wherein said first portion extends higher from said tissue supporting surface than said second portion.

13 . The surgical staple cartridge of claim 10 , wherein said projections comprise first projections and second projections, and wherein each staple cavity of said plurality of staple cavities is partially surrounded by one of said first projections and partially surrounded by one of said second projections.

14 . The surgical staple cartridge of claim 13 , wherein said first projections extend higher from said tissue supporting surface than said second projections.

15 . The surgical staple cartridge of claim 10 , wherein at least some of said staple cavities are partially surrounded by only one of said projections.

16 . The surgical staple cartridge of claim 10 , wherein each said slot is positioned above one of said staple cavities.

17 . The surgical staple cartridge of claim 16 , wherein each said projection comprises a first inner surface and a second inner surface in a facing relationship with said first inner surface, and wherein each first inner surface and corresponding second inner surface define one of said slots.

18 . The surgical staple cartridge of claim 17 , wherein each first inner surface and corresponding second inner surface contact said one of said legs when said staple is ejected from said staple cavity.

19 . The surgical staple cartridge of claim 10 , wherein said sled comprises:

a plurality of ramps, wherein each ramp of said plurality of ramps includes a proximal end and a distal end, wherein said plurality of ramps contact said staple drivers to move said staple drivers from said unfired position to said fired position as said sled moves from said proximal position to said distal position;

a body portion releasably engaged with said cartridge body when said sled is in said proximal position, wherein said body portion releases from said engagement with said cartridge body during said firing stroke; and

a nose extending distally from said body portion, wherein said nose includes a distal end extending distally with respect to said distal end of each ramp of said plurality of ramps.

20 . The surgical staple cartridge of claim 19 , wherein said plurality of ramps comprises four ramps.

21 . A surgical staple cartridge, comprising:

a cartridge body including a proximal end, a distal end, and a longitudinal axis extending between the proximal end and the distal end, the cartridge body comprising:

a deck comprising a deck surface;

a staple cavity defined in the deck; and

a projection extending upwardly from the deck surface, wherein the projection includes a slot that defines an opening into the staple cavity, wherein a lateral cross section of the opening extending perpendicular to the longitudinal axis widens moving downwardly from the slot toward the cavity;

a staple removably stored in the staple cavity; and

a staple driver movable from an unfired position to a fired position during a staple firing stroke to eject the staple from the staple cavity, wherein the slot supports the staple when the staple is ejected from the staple cavity.
