Abstract

The present invention is directed toward an article of footwear with an improved eyelet system independent of the upper. The article of footwear includes an upper and a sole structure, where the sole structure includes a top surface, a bottom surface, a lateral side and a medial side. The article of footwear further includes an eyelet system coupled to the top surface of the sole structure. The eyelet system includes a base structure and a plurality of looped strand portions coupled to the base structure. The base structure is coupled to the top surface of the sole structure such that the plurality of looped strand portions extend outwardly from the sole structure, enabling the looped strand portions to receive a fastening element.

Claims (26)

1. An eyelet system for an article of footwear, the eyelet system comprising:

an upper and a sole structure coupled with the upper;

a base structure having a top layer and a bottom layer coupled to the top layer, the base structure defining a first edge and a second edge, wherein the base structure is secured to the article of footwear at a location between the upper and the sole structure; and

a plurality of loop strands extending from the first edge of the base structure and from between the top layer and the bottom layer, wherein:

each loop strand is constructed from a flexible fabric material; and

each loop strand further comprises a strand with two ends, the ends of each of the plurality of loop strands being coupled to the base structure between the top layer and the bottom layer;

each loop strand includes a portion that is entirely exposed along an exterior surface of the upper as each loop strand extends from an edge of the sole structure that borders the upper; and

each loop strand is isolated and spaced from every other loop strand along the portion of each loop strand that is entirely exposed along the exterior surface of the upper.

2. The eyelet system according to claim 1 , wherein the top layer and the bottom layer of the base structure are constructed from a fabric material.

3. The eyelet system according to claim 1 , wherein each loop strand collectively defines an opening with the base structure.

4. The eyelet system according to claim 3 , wherein each of the openings of the plurality of loop strands are configured to receive a fastening element of the article of footwear.

5. The eyelet system of claim 1 , wherein the base structure is coupled to a top surface of the sole structure.

6. An eyelet system for an article of footwear, the eyelet system comprising:

an upper and a sole structure coupled with the upper;

a base structure having a top layer and a bottom layer coupled to the top layer, wherein the base structure is coupled to at least one of the upper and the sole structure; and

a strand at least partially disposed between the top layer and the bottom layer, the strand extending from an edge of the base structure to form a loop, wherein:

the strand is constructed from a flexible fabric material:

the loop of the strand collectively defines at least one opening with the base structure; and

the loop of the strand extends from an area between the upper and the sole structure;

the loop of the strand is entirely exposed along an exterior surface of the upper as the loop of the strand extends from an edge of the sole structure that borders the upper; and

the loop of the strand that is entirely exposed along the exterior surface of the upper is free from connection with any other strand extending from the edge of the sole structure that borders the upper.

7. The eyelet system according to claim 6 , wherein the strand comprises a first end and a second end, the first and second ends of the strand being disposed between the top layer and the bottom layer of the base structure.

8. The eyelet system according to claim 6 , wherein the strand is a single, continuous strand that forms a plurality of loops, the strand including a first end, an opposite second end, an intermediate portion disposed between the first end and the second end, a first loop portion disposed between the first end and the intermediate portion, and a second loop portion disposed between the intermediate portion and the second end, and wherein the first end, the second end, and the intermediate portion of the strand are disposed between the top layer and the bottom layer of the base structure.

9. The eyelet system according to claim 6 , wherein the top layer and the bottom layer of the base structure are constructed from a fabric material.

10. The eyelet system according to claim 6 , wherein the at least one opening is configured to receive a fastening element of the article of footwear.

11. The eyelet system of claim 6 , wherein the base structure is coupled to a top surface of the sole structure.
