Abstract

A wireless system can be used to authenticate a user device via proximity information of wireless network devices. The system can include the user device, the wireless network devices, and a server. At least some of the wireless network devices can be wirelessly connected to the user device and at least some other wireless network devices can be wirelessly unconnected to the user device. The server can use proximity information about the user device with respect to the wireless network devices to authenticate a user.

Claims (56)

1. A system comprising:

a processor device; and

a non-transitory computer-readable medium comprising instructions that are executable by the processor device for causing the processor device to:

receive prior proximity information from a first user device of a user during a set-up phase, the prior proximity information indicating a first set of wireless network devices in a wireless range of the first user device during the set-up phase;

generate a fingerprint associated with the user based on the prior proximity information;

store the fingerprint for subsequent use in a second factor authentication process;

subsequent to the set-up phase, authenticate the user to access sensitive information by a first factor authentication process; and

subsequent to authenticating the user via the first factor authentication process, and prior to granting the user access to the sensitive information, perform the second factor authentication process, the second factor authentication process involving:

receiving current proximity information from a second user device of the user, the current proximity information indicating a second set of wireless network devices in wireless range of the second user device during the second factor authentication process;

determining a level of closeness between the current proximity information and the prior proximity information;

determining that the level of closeness is a first level of closeness; and

in response to determining that the level of closeness is the first level of closeness, granting the user access to the sensitive information.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the non-transitory computer-readable medium further comprises instructions that are executable by the processor device for causing the processor device to, during the second factor authentication process:

retrieve the fingerprint that includes the prior proximity information; and

compare the fingerprint to the current proximity information to authenticate the user.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the first factor authentication process involves authenticating a username and password of the user.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the first user device is the same as the second user device.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the first user device is different from the second user device.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the level of closeness is determined based on (i) a current date associated with the current proximity information and (ii) a prior date associated with the prior proximity information.

7. A method comprising:

receiving, by a processor device, prior proximity information from a first user device of a user, the prior proximity information indicating a first set of wireless network devices in a wireless range of the first user device during a set-up phase;

authenticating, by the processor device, the user to access sensitive information by a first factor authentication process; and

subsequent to authenticating the user via the first factor authentication process, and prior to granting the user access to the sensitive information, performing, by the processor device, a second factor authentication process involving:

receiving current proximity information from a second user device of the user, the current proximity information indicating a second set of wireless network devices in wireless range of the second user device during the second factor authentication process;

determining a level of closeness between the current proximity information and the prior proximity information;

determining that the level of closeness is a third level of closeness that is less of a match than a first level of closeness and a second level of closeness; and

in response to determining that the level of closeness is the third level of closeness, deny the user access to the sensitive information.

8. The method of claim 7 , further comprising:

receiving the prior proximity information from the first user device during the set-up phase, the set-up phase occurring prior to the first factor authentication process;

generating a fingerprint associated with the user based on the prior proximity information; and

storing the fingerprint for subsequent use in the second factor authentication process.

9. The method of claim 8 , further comprising, during the second factor authentication process:

retrieving the fingerprint that includes the prior proximity information; and

comparing the fingerprint to the current proximity information to authenticate the user.

10. The method of claim 8 , wherein the first factor authentication process involves authenticating a username and password of the user.

11. The method of claim 8 , wherein the first user device is the same as the second user device.

12. The method of claim 8 , wherein the first user device is different from the second user device.

13. The method of claim 8 , wherein the level of closeness is determined based on (i) a current date associated with the current proximity information and (ii) a prior date associated with the prior proximity information.

14. A non-transitory computer-readable medium comprising instructions that are executable by a processor device for causing the processor device to:

receive prior proximity information from a first user device of a user during a set-up phase, the prior proximity information indicating a first set of wireless network devices in a wireless range of the first user device during the set-up phase;

generate a fingerprint associated with the user based on the prior proximity information;

store the fingerprint for subsequent use in a second factor authentication process;

subsequent to the set-up phase, authenticate the user to access sensitive information by a first factor authentication process; and

subsequent to authenticating the user via the first factor authentication process, and prior to granting the user access to the sensitive information, perform the second factor authentication process, the second factor authentication process involving:

receiving current proximity information from a second user device of the user, the current proximity information indicating a second set of wireless network devices in wireless range of the second user device during the second factor authentication process;

determining a level of closeness between the current proximity information and the prior proximity information;

determining that the level of closeness is a second level of closeness that is less of a match than a first level of closeness; and

in response to determining that the level of closeness is the second level of closeness:

granting the user access to the sensitive information; and

updating the prior proximity information to include at least one additional wireless network device that is present in the second set of wireless network devices and absent from the first set of wireless network devices.

15. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 14 , further comprising instructions that are executable by the processor device for causing the processor device to, during the second factor authentication process:

retrieve the fingerprint that includes the prior proximity information; and

compare the fingerprint to the current proximity information to authenticate the user.

16. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 14 , wherein the first factor authentication process involves authenticating a username and password of the user.

17. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 14 , wherein the first user device is the same as the second user device.

18. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 14 , wherein the level of closeness is determined based on (i) a current date associated with the current proximity information and (ii) a prior date associated with the prior proximity information.
