Abstract

Access devices may receive signals over a network and calculate a frequency spectrum of the received signals. An analyzer system may collect the frequency spectrum data from multiple access devices, and based on the collected data, detect, identify, and locate sources of anomalies in a communication network.

Claims (60)

1. A method comprising:

accessing network characterization data for an access device connected with a network;

determining whether a standing wave is detected in the accessed network characterization data;

in response to determining the standing wave is detected, comparing data associated with the detected standing wave from multiple access devices;

evaluating a network topology of the network to identify candidate portions of the network in which a fault can exist;

calculating a distance between faults that create the standing wave;

identifying a candidate location of the faults creating the standing wave; and

identifying a location of the faults.

2. The method of claim 1 , comprising:

storing the accessed network characterization data before determining whether the standing wave is detected in the accessed network characterization data.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the accessed network characterization data is stored in a data structure including an index identifier, an access device identifier associated with the index identifier, and frequency data of a signal received from the network associated with each access device identifier associated with the index identifier.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the determining whether the standing wave is detected in the accessed network characterization data includes detecting a local minimum amplitude or a local maximum amplitude at multiple frequencies in frequency data of the access device.

5. The method of claim 1 , comprising:

storing the multiple access devices into a first group having an identified standing wave, and a second group without an identified standing wave,

wherein the evaluating the network topology of the network to identify candidate portions of the network in which the fault can exist includes:

evaluating based on analysis of the first group and the second group.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the calculating the distance between the faults that create the standing wave includes:

determining the distance by multiplying a velocity of propagation along a signal path by a standing wave period of the standing wave to determine a round trip reflected signal distance; and

dividing the round trip reflected signal distance by two to determine a distance between the faults.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the determining whether the standing wave is detected in the accessed network characterization data comprises:

determining that more than one standing wave is detected for a set of access devices.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the more than one standing wave is determined by:

performing a Fourier transform on frequency data from the access device;

determining two peaks from the Fourier transformed frequency data indicating two standing waves; and

in response to determining the two peaks, calculating respective distances for each of the more than one standing wave.

9. The method of claim 8 , comprising:

in response to determining that a sum of the respective distances add to a length between two components of the network, determining that the fault lies between the two components at a first calculated distance from the first component and a second calculated distance from the second component.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the identifying the location of the faults comprises:

outputting the location to a memory or on a display.

11. A system comprising:

circuitry configured to:

access network characterization data for an access device connected with a network;

determine whether a standing wave is detected in the accessed network characterization data;

in response to determining the standing wave is detected, compare data associated with the detected standing wave from multiple access devices;

evaluate a network topology of the network to identify candidate portions of the network in which a fault can exist;

calculate a distance between faults that create the standing wave;

identify a candidate location of the faults creating the standing wave; and

identify a location of the faults.

12. The system of claim 11 , the circuitry configured to:

store the accessed network characterization data before determining whether the standing wave is detected in the accessed network characterization data.

13. The system of claim 12 , wherein the accessed network characterization data is stored in a data structure including an index identifier, an access device identifier associated with the index identifier, and frequency data of a signal received from the network associated with each access device identifier associated with the index identifier.

14. The system of claim 11 , wherein the circuitry configured to determine whether the standing wave is detected in the accessed network characterization data is configured to:

detect a local minimum amplitude or a local maximum amplitude at multiple frequencies in frequency data of the access device.

15. The system of claim 11 , the circuitry configured to:

store the multiple access devices into a first group having an identified standing wave, and a second group without an identified standing wave,

wherein the circuitry configured to evaluate the network topology of the network to identify candidate portions of the network in which the fault can exist is configured to:

evaluate based on analysis of the first group and the second group.

16. The system of claim 11 , wherein the circuitry configured to calculate the distance between the faults that create the standing wave is configured to:

determine the distance by multiplying a velocity of propagation along a signal path by a standing wave period of the standing wave to determine a round trip reflected signal distance; and

divide the round trip reflected signal distance by two to determine a distance between the faults.

17. The system of claim 11 , wherein the circuitry configured to determine whether the standing wave is detected in the accessed network characterization data is configured to:

determine that more than one standing wave is detected for a set of access devices.

18. The system of claim 17 , wherein the circuitry configured to determine more than one standing wave is configured to:

perform a Fourier transform on frequency data from the access device;

determine two peaks from the Fourier transformed frequency data indicating two standing waves; and

in response to determining the two peaks, calculate respective distances for each of the more than one standing wave.

19. The system of claim 18 , the circuitry configured to:
