Abstract

A media guidance application is provided by which users can define rules for assigning user equipment devices as destinations for media content. For example, a user may define a rule by which selected media content having attributes that satisfy a user-defined condition are downloaded, recorded, or streamed to a particular, user-specified user equipment device. The user may define and manage rules using media guidance menus, and may restrict other users from accessing the rules (e.g., parents restricting children).

Claims (38)

1. A method comprising:

receiving, via a user interface, a first input defining a first rule for assigning a first delivery type for media content, wherein the first rule is associated with a first priority;

receiving, via the user interface, a second input defining a second rule for assigning a second delivery type for the media content, wherein the second rule is associated with a second priority;

receiving, via the user interface, an input selecting a media asset;

determining that the first rule and the second rule are both satisfied by the media asset;

in response to determining that the first and second rules are both satisfied by the media asset, automatically determining which one of the first and second delivery types to assign to the media asset based on whether the first priority associated with the first rule is greater than the second priority associated with the second rule; and

in response to determining that the first priority is greater than the second priority, automatically assigning the first delivery type to the media asset.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein defining a rule comprises receiving, via the user interface, an identification of a delivery type and at least one condition that must be satisfied by the media content for the identified delivery type to be assigned as the delivery type for the media content, wherein the at least one condition comprises at least one attribute that is an attribute associated with the media content.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first rule and the second rule belong to an ordered list of rules and the respective priority associated with the first rule and the second rule is based on relative locations of the first rule and the second rule within the ordered list of rules.

4. The method of claim 3 , further comprising automatically assigning the first delivery type as the delivery type of the selected media asset in response to determining that the first rule comes before the second rule in the ordered list of rules.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving, via the user interface, the first priority associated with the first rule and the second priority associated with the second rule, wherein the first priority is lower than the second priority; and

storing the first priority with the first rule, and the second priority with the second rule.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising, in response to receiving, via the user interface, an option to view a list of stored rules and corresponding priorities, generating for display a prompt to enter a parental control password.

7. The method of claim 6 , further comprising enabling modification of priorities associated with rules in the list of stored rules.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein automatically assigning either the first delivery type or the second delivery type as the delivery type of the selected media content based on the respective priority associated with the first rule and the second rule comprises scheduling the media asset for recording.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein automatically assigning either the first delivery type or the second delivery type as the delivery type of the selected media content based on the respective priority associated with the first rule and the second rule comprises streaming the media asset.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein determining that the first rule and the second rule are both satisfied by the media asset comprises determining that at least one condition of each of the first rule and the second rule is satisfied by the media asset, wherein the at least one condition comprises at least one attribute that is an attribute associated with the media asset.

11. A system comprising:

a user input interface; and

control circuitry configured to:

receive, via the user input interface, a first input defining a first rule for assigning a first delivery type of a plurality of delivery types as a delivery type for media content, wherein the first rule is associated with a first priority;

receive, via the user input interface, a second input defining a second rule for assigning a second delivery type of the plurality of delivery types as the delivery type for the media content, wherein the second rule is associated with a second priority;

receive, via the user input interface, an input selecting a media asset;

determine that the first rule and the second rule are both satisfied by the media asset;

in response to determining that the first and second rules are both satisfied by the media asset, automatically determine which one of the first and second delivery types to assign as the delivery type of the media asset based on whether the first priority associated with the first rule is greater than the second priority associated with the second rule; and

in response to determining that the first priority is greater than the second priority, automatically assign the first delivery type as the delivery type of the media asset.

12. The system of claim 11 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to defining a rule by receiving, via the user input interface, an identification of a delivery type and at least one condition that must be satisfied by the media content for the identified delivery type to be assigned as the delivery type for the media content, wherein the at least one condition comprises at least one attribute that is an attribute associated with the media content.

13. The system of claim 11 , wherein the first rule and the second rule belong to an ordered list of rules and the respective priority associated with the first rule and the second rule is based on relative locations of the first rule and the second rule within the ordered list of rules.

14. The system of claim 13 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to automatically assign the first delivery type as the delivery type of the selected media asset in response to determining that the first rule comes before the second rule in the ordered list of rules.

15. The system of claim 11 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to:

receive, via the user input interface, the first priority associated with the first rule and the second priority associated with the second rule, wherein the first priority is lower than the second priority; and

store the first priority with the first rule, and the second priority with the second rule.

16. The system of claim 11 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to, in response to receiving, via the user input interface, an option to view a list of stored rules and corresponding priorities, generate for display a prompt to enter a parental control password.

17. The system of claim 16 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to enable modification of priorities associated with rules in the list of stored rules.

18. The system of claim 11 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured, when automatically assigning either the first delivery type or the second delivery type as the delivery type of the selected media content based on the respective priority associated with the first rule and the second rule, to schedule the media asset for recording.

19. The system of claim 11 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured, when automatically assigning either the first delivery type or the second delivery type as the delivery type of the selected media content based on the respective priority associated with the first rule and the second rule, to stream the media asset.

20. The system of claim 11 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured, when determining that the first rule and the second rule are both satisfied by the media asset, to determine that at least one condition of each of the first rule and the second rule is satisfied by the media asset, wherein the at least one condition comprises at least one attribute that is an attribute associated with the media asset.
