Abstract

A radio node may calculate one or more performance metrics based on measured satellite signals, which are associated with a global positioning system, or wireless signals that are associated with a cellular-telephone network. Then, the radio node may determine, based on the one or more performance metrics, whether the radio node is a synchronization master in a cluster of radio nodes. When the radio node is the synchronization master, the radio node may provide information intended for a computer specifying that the radio node is the synchronization master and the one or more performance metrics. In response, the radio node may receive a synchronization request associated with another radio node in the cluster. Furthermore, the radio node may provide the synchronization information intended for the other radio node, where the synchronization information specifies time, frequency, and phase synchronization for at least the cluster.

Claims (60)

1. A radio node, comprising:

one or more antenna nodes configured to couple to an antenna;

one or more wired nodes; and

an interface circuit communicatively coupled to the one or more antenna nodes and the one or more wired nodes, wherein the radio node is configured to:

measure, via the interface circuit and during a time interval, electrical signals corresponding to satellite signals or wireless signals, wherein the satellite signals are associated with a global positioning system, and the wireless signals are associated with a cellular-telephone network;

calculate one or more performance metrics based on the electrical signals;

determine, based on the one or more performance metrics, whether the radio node is a synchronization master in a cluster of radio nodes based at least in part on the one or more performance metrics; and

when the radio node is not the synchronization master, the radio node is configured to:

receive, via the interface circuit, information associated with a computer specifying another synchronization master for the radio node, wherein the information comprises a network address of the other synchronization master;

provide, via the interface circuit, a synchronization request addressed to the other synchronization master; and

receive, via the interface circuit, synchronization information intended for the radio node that is associated with the other synchronization master, wherein the synchronization information specifies time, frequency, and phase synchronization for at least the radio node.

2. The radio node of claim 1 , wherein the information specifies a backup synchronization master for the radio node and comprises a network address of the backup synchronization master.

3. The radio node of claim 2 , wherein, when the other synchronization master is inactive, the radio node is configured to:

provide, via the interface circuit, a second synchronization request addressed to the backup synchronization master; and

receive, via the interface circuit, second synchronization information intended for the radio node that is associated with the backup synchronization master, wherein the second synchronization information specifies time, frequency, and phase synchronization for at least the radio node.

4. The radio node of claim 1 , wherein the one or more performance metrics comprises one or more of: an average received signal strength, a number of satellites from which the radio node receives the satellite signals, and a signal-to-noise ratio.

5. The radio node of claim 1 , wherein the radio node is not the synchronization master when one of: a number of satellites from which the radio node receives the satellite signals is less than a first threshold value; or a signal-to-noise ratio is less than than a second threshold value.

6. The radio node of claim 1 , wherein, when the radio node is the synchronization master, the radio node is configured to:

provide, via the interface circuit, second information intended addressed to the computer specifying that the radio node is the synchronization master and the one or more performance metrics;

receive, via the interface circuit, a second synchronization request associated with another radio node in the cluster; and

provide, via the interface circuit, second synchronization information addressed to the other radio node, wherein the second synchronization information specifies time, frequency, and phase synchronization for at least the cluster.

7. The radio node of claim 6 , wherein the radio node receives the second synchronization request without the radio node notifying the other radio node that the radio node is the synchronization master for the other radio node.

8. The radio node of claim 6 , wherein the radio node receives the second synchronization request without the radio node being configured with identifiers of the radio nodes in the cluster.

9. The radio node of claim 6 , wherein the radio node is the second synchronization master when one of: a number of satellites from which the radio node receives the satellite signals is greater than a first threshold value, or a signal-to-noise ratio is greater than a second threshold value.

10. The radio node of claim 6 , wherein the second synchronization request and the second synchronization information are communicated using wired communication.

11. The radio node of claim 6 , wherein the second synchronization request and the second synchronization information use a precision time protocol (PTP).

12. The radio node of claim 1 , wherein the radio node includes an eNodeB.

13. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium for use in conjunction with a radio node, the computer-readable storage medium storing program instructions that, when executed by the radio node, receive synchronization information by causing the radio node to perform one or more operations comprising:

measuring, via an interface circuit in the radio node and during a time interval, electrical signals corresponding to satellite signals or wireless signals, wherein the satellite signals are associated with a global positioning system, and the wireless signals are associated with a cellular-telephone network;

calculating one or more performance metrics based on the electrical signals;

determining, based on the one or more performance metrics, whether the radio node is a synchronization master in a cluster of radio nodes based at least in part on the one or more performance metrics; and

when the radio node is not the synchronization master, the one or more operations comprise:

receiving, via the interface circuit, information associated with a computer specifying another synchronization master for the radio node, wherein the information comprises a network address of the other synchronization master;

providing, via the interface circuit, a synchronization request addressed to the other synchronization master; and

receiving, via the interface circuit, the synchronization information intended for the radio node that is associated with the other synchronization master, wherein the synchronization information specifies time, frequency, and phase synchronization for at least the radio node.

14. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 13 , wherein the information specifies a backup synchronization master for the radio node and comprises a network address of the backup synchronization master.

15. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 14 , wherein, when the other synchronization master is inactive, the operations comprise:

providing, via the interface circuit, a second synchronization request addressed to the backup synchronization master; and

receiving, via the interface circuit, second synchronization information intended for the radio node that is associated with the backup synchronization master, wherein the second synchronization information specifies time, frequency, and phase synchronization for at least the radio node.

16. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 13 , wherein, when the radio node is the synchronization master, the operations comprise:

providing, via the interface circuit, second information intended for the computer specifying that the radio node is the synchronization master and the one or more performance metrics;

receiving, via the interface circuit, a second synchronization request associated with another radio node in the cluster; and

providing, via the interface circuit, the second synchronization information intended for the other radio node, wherein the second synchronization information specifies time, frequency, and phase synchronization for at least the cluster.

17. A method for receiving synchronization information, comprising:

by a radio node:

measuring, via an interface circuit in the radio node and during a time interval, electrical signals corresponding to satellite signals or wireless signals, wherein the satellite signals are associated with a global positioning system, and the wireless signals are associated with a cellular-telephone network;

calculating one or more performance metrics based on the electrical signals;

determining, based on the one or more performance metrics, whether the radio node is a synchronization master in a cluster of radio nodes based at least in part on the one or more performance metrics; and

when the radio node is not the synchronization master, the one or more operations comprise:

receiving, via the interface circuit, information associated with a computer specifying another synchronization master for the radio node, wherein the information comprises a network address of the other synchronization master;

providing, via the interface circuit, a synchronization request addressed to the other synchronization master; and

receiving, via the interface circuit, the synchronization information intended for the radio node that is associated with the other synchronization master, wherein the synchronization information specifies time, frequency, and phase synchronization for at least the radio node.

18. The method of claim 17 , wherein the information specifies a backup synchronization master for the radio node and comprises a network address of the backup synchronization master.

19. The method of claim 18 , wherein, when the other synchronization master is inactive, the method comprises:

providing, via the interface circuit, a second synchronization request addressed to the backup synchronization master; and

receiving, via the interface circuit, second synchronization information intended for the radio node that is associated with the backup synchronization master, wherein the second synchronization information specifies time, frequency, and phase synchronization for at least the radio node.

20. The method of claim 17 , wherein, when the radio node is the synchronization master, the method comprises:

providing, via the interface circuit, second information intended for the computer specifying that the radio node is the synchronization master and the one or more performance metrics;

receiving, via the interface circuit, a second synchronization request associated with another radio node in the cluster; and

providing, via the interface circuit, the second synchronization information intended for the other radio node, wherein the second synchronization information specifies time, frequency, and phase synchronization for at least the cluster.
