Abstract

Techniques are described to improve the robustness of communication of critical life safety data when broadband networks are used as uphaul networks. Monitoring systems are examples of critical monitoring appliances, but the techniques described throughout this disclosure may be applied to any type of critical monitoring appliances, such as life-support devices, fire detectors, smoke detectors, and the like.

Claims (54)

1. A method comprising:

maintaining, by a first system at a first property, path data for a plurality of potential communication paths for communication between the first system and a remote monitoring system that each a) include one or more other systems that transmit data along the corresponding communication path and at least some of which are different than the other systems that transmit data along each of the plurality of potential communication paths and b) have an encryption standard for a corresponding second system from the one or more other systems that is one of a plurality of systems within a threshold distance of the first property, at least two of the encryption standards for systems from the plurality of systems being different encryption standards;

determining, by the first system at the first property that communicates with the remote monitoring system, to send data to the remote monitoring system along any one of the plurality of potential communication paths for communicating with the remote monitoring system;

selecting, from the plurality of potential communication paths and using the path data, a communication path that allows communication with an encryption standard that satisfies a first encryption standard for the data and a second encryption standard for the second system, the first encryption standard from a plurality of potential encryption standards that satisfies a minimum encryption level for communicating the data; and

sending, by the first system at the first property, the data to the remote monitoring system using the selected communication path i) with the remote monitoring system that includes the second system at a second property within a threshold distance of the first property and ii) that was selected using at least one of the first encryption standard for the first system and the second encryption standard for the second system.

The method of claim 1 , wherein determining the communication path comprises selecting, from the plurality of communication paths with the remote monitoring system and using encryption parameters for the plurality of communication paths, the communication path that satisfies a minimum encryption level required to transmit the data.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein determining the communication path comprises:

determining an encryption type for the data; and

selecting, from the plurality of communication paths with the remote monitoring system and using the encryption type for the data, the communication path with the second encryption standard for the second system that satisfies the encryption type for the data.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein determining the communication path comprises:

determining one or more transmission pathway criteria; and

selecting, from the plurality of communication paths with the remote monitoring system and using the one or more transmission pathway criteria, the communication path that satisfies the transmission pathway criteria.

5. The method of claim 1 , comprising:

determining that a primary transmission pathway is unavailable, wherein determining to send data to the remote monitoring system along any one of the plurality of communication paths for communicating with the remote monitoring system, is responsive to determining that the primary transmission pathway is unavailable.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the primary transmission pathway comprises a direct connection from the first system to the remote monitoring system without any intervening systems from other properties adjacent to the first property.

7. The method of claim 5 , wherein the communication path and the primary transmission pathway have the same communication type.

8. The method of claim 1 , comprising:

determining a priority for the data; and

determining, using the priority for the data, whether to send the data using the communication path or to skip currently sending the data using the communication path, wherein sending the data using the communication path is responsive to determining to send the data using the communication path.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein:

the data comprises an alarm signal;

the priority for the data comprises an alarm signal priority; and

determining whether to send the data using the communication path or to skip currently sending the data using the communication path comprises determining whether the alarm signal priority satisfies user-defined emergency situation criteria and to send the data using the communication path.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein selecting the communication path uses at least one of a speed or a reliability of the communication path.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first system and the second system both report data about their respective properties to the remote monitoring system.

12. The method of claim 1 , wherein selecting the communication path comprises:

determining that at least one of the first encryption standard for the data or the second encryption standard for the second system do not satisfy a second encryption standard;

determining, using a type for the data, that the data can be transmitted with the encryption standard that is different from the second encryption standard; and

selecting, from the plurality of communication paths, a communication path that allows communication with an encryption standard that satisfies the first encryption standard for the data and the second encryption standard for the second system.

13. A system comprising one or more computers and one or more storage devices on which are stored instructions that are operable, when executed by the one or more computers, to cause the one or more computers to perform operations comprising:

maintaining, by a first system at a first property, path data for a plurality of potential communication paths for communication between the first system and a remote monitoring system that each a) include one or more other systems that transmit data along the corresponding communication path and at least some of which are different than the other systems that transmit data along each of the plurality of potential communication paths and b) have an encryption standard for a corresponding second system from the one or more other systems that is one of a plurality of systems within a threshold distance of the first property, at least two of the encryption standards for systems from the plurality of systems being different encryption standards;

determining, by the first system at the first property that communicates with the remote monitoring system, to send data to the remote monitoring system along any one of the plurality of potential communication paths for communicating with the remote monitoring system;

selecting, from the plurality of potential communication paths and using the path data, a communication path that allows communication with an encryption standard that satisfies a first encryption standard for the data and a second encryption standard for the second system, the first encryption standard from a plurality of potential encryption standards that satisfies a minimum encryption level for communicating the data; and

sending, by the first system at the first property, the data to the remote monitoring system using the selected communication path i) with the remote monitoring system that includes the second system at a second property within a threshold distance of the first property and ii) that was selected using at least one of the first encryption standard for the first system and the second encryption standard for the second system.

The system of claim 13 , wherein determining the communication path comprises selecting, from the plurality of communication paths with the remote monitoring system and using encryption parameters for the plurality of communication paths, the communication path that satisfies a minimum encryption level required to transmit the data.

15. The system of claim 14 , wherein determining the communication path comprises:

determining an encryption type for the data; and

selecting, from the plurality of communication paths with the remote monitoring system and using the encryption type for the data, the communication path with the second encryption standard for the second system that satisfies the encryption type for the data.

16. The system of claim 14 , wherein determining the communication path comprises:

determining one or more transmission pathway criteria; and

selecting, from the plurality of communication paths with the remote monitoring system and using the one or more transmission pathway criteria, the communication path that satisfies the transmission pathway criteria.

17. The system of claim 13 , the operations comprising:

determining that a primary transmission pathway is unavailable, wherein determining to send data to the remote monitoring system along any one of the plurality of communication paths for communicating with the remote monitoring system, is responsive to determining that the primary transmission pathway is unavailable.

18. The system of claim 17 , wherein the communication path and the primary transmission pathway have the same communication type.

19. The system of claim 13 , wherein selecting the communication path comprises:

determining that at least one of the first encryption standard for the data or the second encryption standard for the second system do not satisfy a second encryption standard;

determining, using a type for the data, that the data can be transmitted with the encryption standard that is different from the second encryption standard; and

selecting, from the plurality of communication paths, a communication path that allows communication with an encryption standard that satisfies the first encryption standard for the data and the second encryption standard for the second system.

20. A non-transitory computer storage medium encoded with instructions that, when executed by one or more computers, cause the one or more computers to perform operations comprising:

maintaining, by a first system at a first property, path data for a plurality of potential communication paths for communication between the first system and a remote monitoring system that each a) include one or more other systems that transmit data along the corresponding communication path and at least some of which are different than the other systems that transmit data along each of the plurality of potential communication paths and b) have an encryption standard for a corresponding second system from the one or more other systems that is one of a plurality of systems within a threshold distance of the first property, at least two of the encryption standards for systems from the plurality of systems being different encryption standards;

determining, by the first system at the first property that communicates with the remote monitoring system, to send emergency data to the remote monitoring system along any one of the plurality of potential communication paths for communicating with the remote monitoring system;

determining, using the emergency data, that any encryption standard is compatible with an emergency encryption standard for the emergency data and to skip selection of an standard from a plurality of potential encryption standards that satisfies a minimum encryption level for communicating the emergency data;

selecting, from the plurality of potential communication paths and using a result of the determination that any encryption standard is compatible with an emergency encryption standard and the path data, a communication path that allows communication with a second encryption standard for the second system; and

sending, by the first system at the first property, the data to the remote monitoring system using the selected communication path i) with the remote monitoring system that includes the second system at a second property within a threshold distance of the first property and ii) that was selected using a result of the determination that any encryption standard is compatible with an emergency encryption standard and the path data.
