Abstract

A wet vacuum cleaner uses a cyclone unit for separating liquid and particles from a suction flow. A main flow inlet to a cyclone chamber is spaced internally from its respective end by a separation distance. The separation distance is at least 0.1 times (effective/equivalent) diameter of the main flow inlet, which assists in preventing formation of large droplets which follows a path to a main flow outlet.

Claims (21)

1 . A wet vacuum cleaner, comprising:

a dirt inlet;

a motor and a fan for delivering suction to the dirt inlet;

a cyclone unit for separating liquid and particles from a flow generated by the suction of the motor and the fan, the cyclone unit having a cyclone axis of rotation, wherein the cyclone unit comprises:

an outer housing having an outer side wall having an opening and an end surface forming a boundary of an internal volume of the cyclone unit and which connects to the outer side wall, the end surface being at an end of the cyclone unit along the cyclone axis of rotation;

a main flow inlet to the opening in the outer side wall having an effective hydraulic inlet diameter;

a main flow inlet conduit which connects to the main flow inlet; and

a main flow outlet from the outer housing,

wherein the main flow inlet is at the end of the cyclone unit, spaced internally from the end surface by a separation distance of at least 0.1 times the effective hydraulic inlet diameter, and

the main flow inlet conduit extends in a direction offset from a perpendicular to the cyclone axis and facing towards the end surface.

2 . The vacuum cleaner of claim 1 , wherein the main flow inlet is spaced internally from the end surface by a spacing between 0.1 and 2 times the effective hydraulic inlet diameter.

3 . The vacuum cleaner of claim 1 , comprising an outlet conduit which extends from the end surface into a central region of the outer housing and the main flow outlet is at an end of the outlet conduit.

4 . The vacuum cleaner of claim 1 , wherein the main flow inlet is spaced internally below the end surface by the separation distance between 5 mm and 50 mm.

5 . The vacuum cleaner of claim 1 , wherein the main flow inlet conduit extends in the direction offset by 0 to 90 degrees from the perpendicular to the cyclone axis of rotation.

6 . The vacuum cleaner of claim 1 , wherein transition between the main flow inlet conduit and the outer housing has, at least for a portion of the opening facing away from the end surface, a radius of curvature of at least 0.5 mm.

7 . The vacuum cleaner of claim 6 , wherein the radius of curvature is at least 1 mm.

8 . The vacuum cleaner of claim 1 , wherein the main flow inlet conduit has a first cross sectional area and an area of the opening is a second cross sectional area.

9 . The vacuum cleaner of claim 8 , wherein the second cross sectional area is at least 1.1 times the first cross sectional area.

10 . The vacuum cleaner of claim 9 , wherein the second cross sectional area is at least 1.2 times the first cross sectional area.

11 . The vacuum cleaner of claim 1 , wherein the main flow outlet extends parallel to the cyclone axis of rotation.

12 . The vacuum cleaner of claim 1 , wherein at least a portion of the outer housing is cylindrical around the cyclone axis of rotation.
