Abstract

Guides for guiding a tool into a medullary canal of a bone. The guides can include a base and a guide feature. The base can include a first surface configured to contact the bone and a second surface opposite the first surface. The guide feature can be disposed to guide the tool along a central portion of the medullary canal.

Claims (46)

1 . A guide for guiding a tool into a medullary canal of a bone, the guide comprising:

a base comprising a first surface configured to contact the bone and a second surface opposite the first surface;

a guide feature disposed to guide the tool along a central portion of the medullary canal; and

one or more passageways disposed about a periphery of the base, each of the one or more passageways configured to receive an osteotome.

2 . The guide of claim 1 , wherein the one or more passageways comprises a pair of passageways.

3 . The guide of claim 2 , wherein each of the pair of passageways is disposed on either side of the guide feature.

4 . The guide of claim 1 , wherein the one or more passageways is one or more slots.

5 . The guide of claim 4 , wherein the one or more slots are defined in a slot member, the slot member extending from second surface of the base to provide support for the osteotome.

6 . The guide of claim 5 , wherein the slot member is integral with the base.

7 . The guide of claim 1 , further comprising a handle attachment feature extending from a central region of the second surface.

8 . The guide of claim 7 , wherein the handle attachment feature is configured to threadably engage a handle.

9 . The guide of claim 1 , further comprising a pilot tip extending from the first surface of the base.

10 . The guide of claim 9 , further comprising a lumen configured to receive the tool, the lumen extending through the guide feature and the pilot tip.

11 . The guide of claim 1 , further comprising a cutting feature along at least a portion of a periphery of the base.

12 . The guide of claim 11 , further comprising a groove on the first surface of the base, the groove disposed adjacent to the cutting feature.

13 . The guide of claim 1 , wherein the guide feature extends from a superior region of the base.

14 . The guide of claim 1 , further comprising a depth stop configured to contact a resected or recessed surface of the bone.

15 .- 16 . (canceled)

17 . A guide for guiding a tool into a medullary canal of a bone, the guide comprising:

a base comprising a first surface configured to contact the bone and a second surface opposite the first surface;

a guide feature disposed to guide a tool along a central portion of a medullary canal; and a handle attachment feature extending from a central region of the second surface, the handle attachment feature comprising an interface configured to releasably engage a handle.

18 . The guide of claim 17 , further comprising a depth stop configured to contact a resected or recessed surface of the bone.

19 . The guide of claim 17 , the guide feature positioned at a superior region of the base.

20 . The guide of claim 17 , further comprising a pilot tip extending from the first surface of the base.

21 . The guide of claim 20 , further comprising a lumen configured to receive the tool, the lumen extending through the guide feature and the pilot tip.

22 . The guide of claim 17 , further comprising a cutting feature along at least a portion of a periphery of the base with a groove on the first surface of the base, the groove disposed adjacent to the cutting feature.

23 . (canceled)

24 . A guide for guiding a tool into a medullary canal of a bone, the guide comprising:

a base comprising a first surface configured to contact the bone and a second surface opposite the first surface;

a guide feature disposed to guide a tool along a central portion of a medullary canal; and a cutting feature along at least a portion of a periphery of the base.

25 . The guide of claim 24 , wherein the cutting feature is disposed between the first surface and the second surface of the base, such that the cutting feature is on a superior side of the base.

26 . (canceled)

27 . The guide of claim 24 , wherein the cutting feature is disposed on either side of the guide feature.

28 .- 29 . (canceled)

30 . The guide of claim 24 , further comprising a groove on the first surface of the base, the groove disposed adjacent the cutting feature.

31 . The guide of claim 24 , further comprising a pilot tip extending from the first surface of the base.

32 . The guide of claim 31 , further comprising a lumen configured to receive the tool, the lumen extending through the guide feature and the pilot tip.

33 .- 34 . (canceled)

35 . A method of preparing a bone, the method comprising:

advancing a guide onto a resected surface of the bone;

guiding a tool through a guide feature of the guide and along a medullary canal of the bone; and

advancing an osteotome through a passageway along a periphery of the guide.

36 . (canceled)

37 . The method of claim 35 , further comprising positioning the guide on the resected surface of the bone using a pilot tip on the guide.

38 . The method of claim 35 , further comprising threadably attaching a handle to a central region of the guide.

39 . The method of claim 35 , further comprising cutting the bone as the guide is advanced into the bone.
