Abstract

A method and system for identifying radio transmission links for one or more cells within a network. The method includes receiving location data with respect to a cell within the network, determining if a first line of sight is substantially clear between the cell and a first nearest radio transmitter to the cell, upon determining that the first line of sight is substantially clear between the cell and the first nearest radio transmitter to the cell, determining if the first nearest radio transmitter is a first transmission medium location, and upon determining that the first nearest radio transmitter is the first transmission medium location, creating a radio transmission link between the cell and the first nearest radio transmitter to the cell.

Claims (46)

1 . A computer-implemented method, performed by at least one processor, for identifying radio transmission links for one or more cells within a network, the method comprising:

receiving location data with respect to a cell within the network;

finding, based on the location data, multiple radio transmitters as candidates;

determining, for each of the candidates, if a first line of sight is clear between the cell and each of the candidates;

upon determining that there is one or more candidates with a clear line of sight, determining if each of the one or more candidates with the clear line of sight are located at a first transmission medium location; and

upon determining that there is one or more candidates located at the first transmission medium location, creating a link between the cell and at least one of the one or more candidates located at the first transmission medium location.

2 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

upon determining that there are no candidates located at the first transmission medium location, determining if each of the one or more candidates with the clear line of sight is located at a second transmission medium location; and

upon determining that there is one or more candidates located at the second transmission medium location, creating a link between the cell and at least one of the one or more candidates located at the second transmission medium location.

3 . The method of claim 2 , further comprising:

upon determining there are no candidates located at the second transmission medium location, determining if each of the one or more candidates with the clear line of sight is located at a third transmission medium location;

upon determining that there is one or more candidates located at the third transmission medium location, calculating, for each of the one or more candidates located at the third transmission medium location, a distance from the cell;

determining, for each of the one or more candidates, if the calculated distance is below a threshold value;

upon determining that there is one or more calculated distances that are below the threshold value, creating a link between the cell and at least one of the one or more candidates located at a third transmission medium location with the distance that is below the threshold.

4 . The method of claim 3 , wherein the third nearest radio transmitter is comprised of a manhole or manhole cover adapted for signal propagation.

5 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the second transmission medium location is comprised of a microwave site.

6 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the first transmission medium location is comprised of a fiber optic network location or Point of Presence (POP).

7 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

displaying a visual representation of the link between the cell and the first nearest radio transmitter to the cell on a graphical user interface.

8 . The method of claim 1 , wherein multiple links are created between the cell and the candidates located at the first transmission medium location.

9 . An apparatus for identifying radio transmission links for one or more cells within a network, the apparatus comprising:

a memory storage storing computer-executable instructions; and

a processor communicatively coupled to the memory storage, wherein the processor is configured to execute the computer-executable instructions and cause the processor to:

receive, from a central sever, location data with respect to a cell within the network;

find, based on the location data, multiple radio transmitters as candidates;

determine, for each of the candidates if a first line of sight is clear between the cell and each of the candidates;

upon determining that there is one or more candidates with a clear line of sight, determine if each of the one or more candidates with the clear line of sight are located at a first transmission medium location; and

upon determining that there is one or more candidates located at the first transmission medium location, create a link between the cell and at least one of the one or more candidates located at the first transmission medium location.

10 . The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the computer-executable instructions, when executed by the processor, further cause the processor to:

upon determining that there are no candidates located at the first transmission medium location, determine if each of the one or more candidates with the clear line of sight is located at a second transmission medium location; and

upon determining that there is one or more candidates located at the second transmission medium location, create a link between the cell and at least one of the one or more candidates located at the second transmission medium location.

11 . The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the computer-executable instructions, when executed by the processor, further cause the processor to:

upon determining there are no candidates located at the second transmission medium location, determine if each of the one or more candidates with the clear line of sight is located at a third transmission medium location;

upon determining that there is one or more candidates located at the third transmission medium location, calculate, for each of the one or more candidates located at the third transmission medium location, a distance from the cell;

determine, for each of the one or more candidates, if the calculated distance is below a threshold value;

upon determining that there is one or more calculated distances that are below the threshold value, create a link between the cell and at least one of the one or more candidates located at a third transmission medium location with the distance that is below the threshold.

12 . The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the second nearest radio transmitter is comprised of a manhole or manhole cover adapted for signal propagation.

13 . The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the first transmission medium location is comprised of a fiber optic network location or Point of Presence (POP).

14 . The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the computer-executable instructions, when executed by the processor, further cause the processor to:

displaying a visual representation of the link between the cell and the first nearest radio transmitter to the cell on a graphical user interface.

15 . A non-transitory computer-readable medium comprising computer-executable instructions for identifying radio transmission links for one or more cells within a network by an apparatus, wherein the computer-executable instructions, when executed by at least one processor of the apparatus, cause the apparatus to:

receive location data with respect to a cell within the network;

find, based on the location data, multiple radio transmitters as candidates;

determine, for each of the candidates, if a first line of sight is clear between the cell and each of the candidates;

upon determining that there is one or more candidates with a clear line of sight, determine if each of the one or more candidates with the clear line of sight are located at a first transmission medium location; and

upon determining that there is one or more candidates located at the first transmission medium location, create a link between the cell and at least one of the one or more candidates located at the first transmission medium location.
