Abstract

An impedance reflector apparatus, systems, and methods are provided for detecting a marker implanted within tissue that includes a switch for changing a configuration of an antenna of the marker. The apparatus includes a set of transmit electrodes coupled to a signal generator for transmitting a drive current into tissue to generate an electromagnetic field around the marker, a set of receive electrodes configured to detect voltage signals within the tissue corresponding to the electromagnetic field, and a light source for delivering light pulses into the body to open and close the switch to change the configuration of the antenna of the marker. A processor coupled to the receive electrodes processes the detected voltage signals to identify changes in the electromagnetic field that are synchronized with the light pulses to determine whether the marker is operating properly.

Claims (39)

1. An apparatus for detecting a marker implanted within tissue that includes an energy converter coupled to a circuit for changing a configuration of an antenna of the marker, the apparatus comprising:

a signal generator to provide an A/C drive current, the signal generator coupled to a set of electrodes such that when the apparatus is placed adjacent the tissue an electrical circuit is formed with current flowing through the tissue between the set of electrodes;

a light source for delivering light pulses into the tissue to cause the energy converter to activate and deactivate the circuit to change the configuration of the antenna of the marker; and

a detector circuit to:

receive voltage signals from the tissue corresponding to the A/C drive current;

identify changes in an amplitude component of the voltage signals; and

determine whether the changes in the amplitude component of the received voltage signals are synchronized with the light pulses to determine whether the marker is operating properly.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the signal generator is configured to generate the A/C drive current with a substantially uniform amplitude, and wherein the detector circuit is configured to remove an A/C component from the voltage signals to identify the amplitude component of the voltage signals.

3. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising an output device coupled to the processor that provides an indication when the processor determined the marker is operating properly.

4. The apparatus of claim 3 , wherein the output device comprises at least one of a light and a speaker.

5. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the changes to the amplitude component correspond to changes in impedance of the tissue caused by the change in the configuration of the antenna of the marker.

6. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a set of receive electrodes coupled to the detector circuit, and a set of transmit detectors coupled to the signal generator.

7. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the signal generator is configured to generate an alternating current between about three and three hundred kilohertz (3-300 kHz) for causing the transmit electrodes to transmit the A/C drive current.

8. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the light pulses occur at a slower frequency than a frequency of the A/C drive current.

9. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising an actuator for activating the light source to deliver the light pulses, the detector circuit configured to process the voltage signals before activating the light source to determine a threshold voltage and to process the detected voltage signals after the light source is activated to identify changes relative to the threshold voltage.

10. A system for verifying operation of a marker implanted within tissue, comprising:

a marker sized for implantation within tissue comprising an energy converter coupled to a circuit for changing a configuration of an antenna of the marker; and

an apparatus comprising:

a signal generator to provide an A/C drive current, the signal generator coupled to a set of electrodes such that when the apparatus is placed adjacent the tissue an electrical circuit is formed with current flowing through the tissue between the set of electrodes;

a light source for delivering light pulses into the tissue to cause the energy converter to activate and deactivate the circuit to change the configuration of the antenna of the marker; and

a detector circuit to:

receive voltage signals from the tissue corresponding to the A/C drive current;

identify changes in an amplitude component of the voltage signals; and

determine whether the changes in the amplitude component of the received voltage signals are synchronized with the light pulses to determine whether the marker is operating properly.

11. The system of claim 10 , wherein the signal generator is configured to generate the A/C drive current with a substantially uniform amplitude, and wherein the detector circuit is configured to remove an A/C component from the voltage signals to identify the amplitude component of the voltage signals.

12. The system of claim 10 , the apparatus further comprising an output device coupled to the processor that provides an indication when the processor determined the marker is operating properly.

13. The system of claim 10 , wherein the output device comprises at least one of a light and a speaker.

14. The system of claim 10 , wherein the changes to the amplitude component correspond to changes in impedance of the tissue caused by the change in the configuration of the antenna of the marker.

15. The system of claim 10 , the apparatus further comprising a set of receive electrodes coupled to the detector circuit, and a set of transmit detectors coupled to the signal generator.

16. The system of claim 10 , wherein the signal generator is configured to generate an alternating current between about three and three hundred kilohertz (3-300 kHz) for causing the transmit electrodes to transmit the A/C drive current.

17. The system of claim 10 , wherein the light pulses occur at a slower frequency than a frequency of the A/C drive current.

18. A method for verifying operation of a marker implanted within tissue that includes an energy converter coupled to a circuit for changing a configuration of an antenna of the marker, the method comprising:

delivering light pulses into the tissue such that the energy converter transforms the light pulses to activate and deactivate the circuit to change a configuration of the antenna;

transmitting an A/C drive current into the tissue;

receiving voltage signals from the tissue corresponding to the A/C drive current;

identifying changes in an amplitude component of the voltage signals; and

determining whether the changes in the amplitude component of the received voltage signals are synchronized with the light pulses to determine whether the marker is operating properly.

19. The method of claim 18 , wherein the light pulses occur at a slower frequency than a frequency of the A/C drive current.

20. The method of claim 18 , further comprising removing an A/C component from the voltage signals to identify the amplitude component of the voltage signals.
