Abstract

Methods, systems and devices for evaluating the integrity of a uterine cavity. A method comprises introducing transcervically a probe into a patient's uterine cavity, providing a flow of a fluid (e.g., CO 2 ) through the probe into the uterine cavity and monitoring the rate of the flow to characterize the uterine cavity as perforated or non-perforated based on a change in the flow rate.

Claims (38)

1. A device, comprising:

a probe having a proximal end and a distal end, the probe including a first lumen and a second lumen;

a connector coupled to the proximal end of the probe, the connector adapted to be connected to a pressurized fluid source;

an expandable sealing balloon surrounding the distal end of the probe and adapted to be deployed within a uterine canal, the expandable sealing balloon in fluid communication with the first lumen of the probe, wherein the expandable sealing balloon expands when filled with fluid from the pressurized fluid source delivered through the first lumen of the probe;

a balloon member extending distally from the distal end of the probe, the balloon member adapted to be deployed within a uterine cavity;

a sleeve having a plurality of gas ports, the sleeve being connected to the probe and configured so that each of the plurality of gas ports is in fluid communication with the second lumen of the probe, each of the plurality of gas ports in fluid communication with an interior of the balloon member; and

a passageway extending through the device, distinct from the first lumen and the second lumen, the passageway adapted to be in fluid communication with a gas source such that a gas from the gas source is able to flow through the passageway and into the uterine cavity, wherein the gas flows to an exterior of the balloon member.

2. The device of claim 1 , further comprising a regulated vacuum source connected to the connector and in fluid communication with the sleeve.

3. The device of claim 1 , wherein the sleeve is formed of silicone.

4. The device of claim 1 , further comprising a balloon inflation source in fluid communication with the expandable sealing balloon via the first lumen of the probe.

5. The device of claim 4 , wherein the inflation source is a syringe mechanism.

6. The device of claim 1 , further comprising the gas source in fluid communication with the passageway extending through the device.

7. The device of claim 1 , wherein the balloon member is adapted to expand in response when gas flows through the plurality of ports and into the interior of the balloon member.

8. The device of claim 1 , wherein the balloon member is adapted to ablate tissue lining the uterine cavity when heated gas flows through the plurality of ports into the interior of the balloon member.

9. The device of claim 1 , wherein the passageway extends through the device to a location distal of the expandable sealing balloon.

10. A device, comprising:

a probe having a proximal end and a distal end, the probe including a first lumen and a second lumen;

a sealing balloon surrounding the distal end of the probe and adapted to be deployed within a uterine canal, the sealing balloon in fluid communication with the first lumen of the probe, wherein the sealing balloon expands when filled with a fluid from a source of pressurized fluid delivered through the first lumen of the probe;

a sleeve having a plurality of gas ports, the sleeve being connected to the probe and configured so that each of the plurality of gas ports is in fluid communication with the second lumen; and

a passageway extending through the device to a location distal of the sealing balloon, distinct from the first lumen and the second lumen, the passageway adapted to be in fluid communication with a gas source such that a gas from the gas source is able to flow through the passageway and into a uterine cavity, said gas being able to contact a uterine wall for testing uterine wall integrity.

11. The device of claim 10 , further comprising the source of pressurized fluid adapted to be fluidly coupled with the first lumen.

12. The device of claim 10 , further comprising a first the gas source adapted to be fluidly coupled with the passageway and a second gas source adapted to be fluidly coupled with the second lumen.

13. The device of claim 10 , further comprising a balloon member extending distally from the distal end of the probe, the balloon member including an interior volume fluidly coupled with the plurality of gas ports.

14. The device of claim 13 , wherein the balloon member is adapted to expand in response when a second gas flows through the plurality of ports and into the interior volume of the balloon member.

15. The device of claim 13 , wherein the balloon member is adapted to ablate tissue lining the uterine cavity when heated gas flows through the plurality of ports into the interior of the balloon member.

16. A device, comprising:

an elongate member having a proximal end and a distal end, the elongate member defining:

a first lumen;

a second lumen;

a third lumen; and

a plurality of gas ports fluidly coupled with the third lumen;

a first expandable member disposed about the distal end of the elongate member and adapted to be deployed within a uterine canal, the first expandable member fluidly coupled with the first lumen;

a second expandable member extending distally from the distal end of the elongate member and adapted to be deployed within a uterine cavity, the plurality of gas ports disposed within an interior of the second expandable member such that the interior of the second expandable member is fluidly coupled with the second lumen;

wherein the third lumen is adapted to be in fluid communication with a gas source such that a gas from the gas source is able to flow through the third lumen distally beyond the first expandable member and into the uterine cavity and said gas flows to an exterior of the second expandable member.

17. The device of claim 16 , further comprising a regulated vacuum source adapted to be fluidly coupled with the elongate member.

18. The device of claim 16 , further comprising a first expandable member inflation source adapted to be fluidly coupled with the first lumen.

19. The device of claim 16 , further comprising a second expandable member inflation source adapted to be fluidly coupled with the second lumen.

20. The device of claim 16 , further comprising the gas source adapted to be fluidly coupled with the third lumen.
