Abstract

Disclosed herein are endoscope assemblies, and more particularly endoscopes with a working channel for use in hysteroscopy, and methods of use thereof. Devices and systems related to an integrated hysteroscopic treatment system including an endoscopic viewing system, a fluid management system, a resecting device and a controller for operating all the systems. Also disclosed are integrated hysteroscopic treatment systems that include an endoscopic viewing system, a fluid management system, a resecting device and a controller for operating all the systems.

Claims (30)

1. An endoscope for use with a tool, the endoscope comprising:

an elongated shaft having a central axis extending from a proximal end to a working end;

an image sensor at the working end;

a working channel sleeve extending from the proximal end to the working end, wherein a distal portion of the working channel sleeve comprises a superior surface spaced from an inferior surface, the inferior surface having a living hinge portion extending longitudinally, the working channel sleeve having longitudinal cutouts extending along the central axis on lateral sidewalls of the working channel sleeve which separate the superior surface from the inferior surface, wherein the living hinge portion is adjacent the cutouts;

an elastomeric sleeve that surrounds the working channel sleeve, the elastomeric sleeve constricting the distal portion of the working channel sleeve into a first configuration; and

wherein advancement of the tool through the working channel sleeve and against the superior surface and the inferior surface stretches the elastomeric sleeve and the working channel sleeve into a second configuration.

2. The endoscope of claim 1 , wherein the second configuration comprises a second cross-sectional shape larger than a first cross-sectional shape of the first configuration such that the image sensor remains stationary upon assuming the second cross-sectional shape.

3. The endoscope of claim 2 , wherein the distal portion in the first cross-sectional shape maintains a distal open termination by projecting portions of a bottom wall which abut a top wall of the distal portion.

4. The endoscope of claim 1 , wherein the inferior surface includes a non-elastomeric material.

5. The endoscope of claim 1 , wherein the distal portion has a first cross-sectional shape with the lateral sidewalls in a repose condition and a second larger cross-sectional shape with the lateral sidewalls in a stretched condition.

6. The endoscope of claim 5 , wherein the distal portion in the first cross-sectional shape is configured to maintain a distal open termination to allow fluid flow therethrough.

7. The endoscope of claim 1 , wherein the elongated shaft extends along a longitudinal axis to an angled section that transitions to the distal portion that extends along a second axis that is offset from the longitudinal axis.

8. The endoscope of claim 1 , wherein the elongated shaft includes a fluid inflow channel communicating with a fluid source.

9. The endoscope of claim 1 , wherein the working channel sleeve communicates with an outflow pump.

10. The endoscope of claim 1 , wherein the elongated shaft includes a flow channel communicating with a pressure sensor carried in a housing coupled to the elongated shaft.

11. An endoscope system for use with a tool, the endoscope system comprising:

a handle;

an elongated shaft having a central axis extending from a proximal end to a working end;

a working channel sleeve extending from the proximal end to the working end;

an elastomeric sleeve that surrounds the working channel sleeve, the elastomeric sleeve constricting a distal portion of the working channel sleeve into a first configuration; and

wherein the elongated shaft extends along a longitudinal axis to an angled section that transitions to a distal section that extends along a second axis that is offset from the longitudinal axis, wherein the angled section comprises a superior surface spaced from an inferior surface, the inferior surface having a living hinge portion extending longitudinally, wherein sliding of the tool against the superior surface and the inferior surface deflects the living hinge portion from the first configuration to a second configuration.

12. The endoscope system of claim 11 , further comprising an image sensor at the working end.

13. The endoscope system of claim 12 , wherein the distal section is expandable in a direction away from the image sensor upon advancement of the tool to assume an expanded profile while the image sensor remains stationary.

14. The endoscope system of claim 13 , wherein the second configuration comprises a second cross-sectional shape larger than a first cross-sectional shape of the first configuration such that the image sensor remains stationary upon assuming the second cross-sectional shape.

15. The endoscope system of claim 11 , wherein advancement of the tool through the working channel sleeve and against the superior surface and the inferior surface stretches the elastomeric sleeve and the working channel sleeve into the second configuration.

16. The endoscope system of claim 11 , wherein the inferior surface includes a non-elastomeric material.

17. The endoscope system of claim 11 , wherein the distal portion in the first configuration maintains a distal open termination by projecting portions of a bottom wall which abut a top wall of the distal portion.

18. The endoscope system of claim 11 , wherein the elongated shaft includes a fluid inflow channel communicating with a fluid source.

19. The endoscope system of claim 11 , wherein the working channel sleeve communicates with an outflow pump.

20. The endoscope system of claim 11 , wherein the elongated shaft includes a flow channel communicating with a pressure sensor carried in a housing coupled to the elongated shaft.
