Abstract

In a synchronization system that synchronizes files from multiple computing devices, the present invention provides a method for (1) displaying files from multiple computing devices in a multi-view user interface and (2) enabling content and file operations to be performed on such files through the user interface. The multi-view interface includes a file-system view and one or more media-specific views. In the file-system view files are organized in the same way in which they are organized on the devices on which they are stored. In the file-system view, users can perform file operations on files. In the media-specific view files are organized by media category. In one embodiment of the media-specific view, files are organized by metadata that relates to the files content. In the media-specific view, users can perform content operations on the files.

Claims (51)

1. A computer-implemented method comprising:

providing, via a client application on a first client device, a graphical user interface comprising content items that are stored on a server system, the graphical user interface comprising a selectable element associated with each of the content items;

receiving, from the first client device, an indication of a user selection of a first selectable element associated with a first content item displayed in the graphical user interface;

based on receiving the indication of the user selection of the first selectable element, providing the first content item to the first client device for local storage on the first client device;

receiving, from a second client device, an operation with respect to the first content item; and

providing, to the first client device, an update to the first content item based on the first content item being locally stored on the first client device, wherein the update is based on the operation received from the second client device.

2. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , further comprising organizing the content items in a file system view that indicates an organization of the content items on the server system, wherein providing the graphical user interface comprising the content items causes the first client device to display the content items in the file system view.

3. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , further comprising registering the first client device with the server system to receive updates for the first content item based on receiving the indication of the user selection of the first selectable element associated with the first content item.

4. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining a change to content of the first content item based on the operation with respect to the first content item received from the second client device; and

wherein providing the update to the first content item comprises providing, to the first client device, data representing the change to the content of the first content item.

5. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining a change to a file organization of the content items based on the operation with respect to the first content item received from the second client device; and

wherein providing the update to the first content item comprises providing, to the first client device, an updated file organization.

6. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving, from the first client device, a notification of a change to the first content item based on the first client device detecting the change to the first content item at the first client device; and

updating, at the server system, the first content item based on receiving the notification of the change to the first content item from the first client device.

7. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the first content item is one of a folder associated with one or more files or an individual file.

8. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein providing the first content item to the first client device for local storage on the first client device comprises providing a link that indicates a storage location of the first content item on the server system.

9. A non-transitory computer readable medium storing instructions that, when executed by at least one processor, cause a computing device to:

provide, via a client application on a first client device, a graphical user interface comprising content items that are stored on a server system, the graphical user interface comprising a selectable element associated with each of the content items;

receive, from the first client device, an indication of a user selection of a first selectable element associated with a first content item displayed in the graphical user interface;

based on receiving the indication of the user selection of the first selectable element, provide the first content item to the first client device and register the first client device with the server system to receive updates for the first content item;

receive, from a second client device, an operation with respect to the first content item; and

provide, to the first client device, an update to the first content item based on the first content item being locally stored on the first client device, wherein the update is based on the operation received from the second client device.

10. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 9 , wherein the operation received from the second client device comprises one of a copy operation, a move operation, a paste operation, a cut operation, or a delete operation.

11. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 9 , further comprising instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the computing device to:

determine a change to a file organization of the content items based on the operation with respect to the first content item received from the second client device; and

wherein providing the update to the first content item comprises providing, to the first client device, an updated file organization.

12. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 9 , wherein the content items stored on the server system are selectively synchronized with a plurality of client devices so that a first given content item from the content items is synchronized with a different group of client devices compared to a second given content item from the content items.

13. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 9 , further comprising instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the computing device to:

receive, from the first client device, a notification of a change to the first content item based on the first client device monitoring for changes associated with the first content item at the first client device; and

update, at the server system, the first content item based on receiving the notification of the change to the first content item from the first client device.

14. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 9 , further comprising instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the computing device to:

determine a change to content of the first content item based on the operation with respect to the first content item received from the second client device; and

wherein providing the update to the first content item comprises providing, to the first client device, data representing the change to the content of the first content item.

15. A system comprising:

at least one processor; and

a non-transitory computer readable medium storing instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the system to:

provide, via a client application on a first client device, a graphical user interface comprising content items that are stored on a server system, the graphical user interface comprising a selectable element associated with each of the content items;

receive, from the first client device, an indication of a user selection of a first selectable element associated with a first content item displayed in the graphical user interface;

based on receiving the indication of the user selection of the first selectable element, register the first client device with the server system to receive updates for the first content item;

receive, from a second client device, an operation with respect to the first content item; and

provide, to the first client device, an update to the first content item based on first client device being registered with the server system to receive updates for the first content item, wherein the update is based on the operation received from the second client device.

16. The system of claim 15 , wherein receiving, from the second client device, the operation with respect to the first content item comprises receiving the operation via one of a client application on the second client device or a web interface provided via a web browser on the second client device.

17. The system of claim 15 , further comprising instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the system to organize the content items in a file system view that indicates an organization of the content items on the server system, wherein providing the graphical user interface comprising the content items causes the first client device to display the content items in the file system view.

18. The system of claim 15 , wherein the first content item is one of a folder associated with one or more files or an individual file.

19. The system of claim 15 , further comprising instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the system to:

determine a change to content of the first content item based on the operation with respect to the first content item received from the second client device; and

wherein providing the update to the first content item comprises providing, to the first client device, data representing the change to the content of the first content item.

20. The system of claim 15 , further comprising instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the system to, based on receiving the indication of the user selection of the first selectable element, provide to the first client device the first content item, and metadata associated with the first content item comprising a storage location of the first content item on the server system.
