Abstract

Disclosed are methods, devices, and systems for improved protective clothing such as helmets and protective headgear, including improvements in modular, semi-custom or customized helmet liners and/or inserts to enhance wearer comfort and reduce the deleterious effects of impacts between the wearer and other players and/or objects in all types of wearer activities (i.e., sports, military, equestrian, etc.).

Claims (32)

1. A protective football helmet comprising:

an outer shell having an outer surface and an inner surface, the outer shell sized in accordance with actual measurements of a wearer's head; and

a customizable liner system within the outer shell, the customizable liner system comprising a plurality of padded liner portions formed from a deformable material and configured to dissipate impact forces, wherein each padded liner portion of the plurality of padded liner portions has a thickness adapted to a shape of a wearer's head;

wherein at least one of the plurality of padded liner portions is shaped and sized in accordance with the actual measurements of the wearer's head.

2. The protective football helmet of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of padded liner portions are formed from a polymer and have an open cell structure.

3. The protective football helmet of claim 1 , wherein each padded liner portion of the plurality of padded liner portions includes a connection component, the connection component configured to couple the padded liner portion within the outer shell.

4. The protective football helmet of claim 3 , wherein the connection component comprises a hook and loop fastener system.

5. The protective football helmet of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of padded liner portions include at least a left side pad liner, a right side pad liner, a front pad liner, a midline base pad minor, and a back pad liner, and the plurality of padded liner portions are configured to be positioned within the outer shell so as to contact at least half of a surface of the wearer's head located within the outer shell.

6. The protective football helmet of claim 1 , wherein each padded liner portion of the plurality of padded liner portions has a custom density, the custom density selected based on a position of the padded liner portion within the outer shell.

7. The protective football helmet of claim 1 , wherein each padded liner portion of the plurality of padded liner portions has a custom thickness.

8. The protective football helmet of claim 7 , wherein the custom thickness is selected based on a position of the padded liner portion within the outer shell.

9. A method for manufacturing a customizable protective football helmet, the method comprising:

determining, using a scanning or measuring device, head scan data for a scan of a wearer's head, wherein the head scan data specifies one or more dimensions for a plurality of portions of the wearer's head;

selecting, based on the head scan data of the wearer's head, a helmet shell from a plurality of helmet shells having different associated dimensions; and

selecting, for each of the plurality of portions of the wearer's head, at least one liner portion with a particular thickness for placement within the selected helmet, wherein the selection of the at least one liner portion is based on the head scan data of the wearer's head;

wherein the at least one liner portion has a thickness customized to the one or more dimensions for the particular portion of the wearer's head as specified by the head scan data.

10. The method of claim 9 , the determining head scan data further comprising obtaining a 2-dimensional or 3-dimensional scan of the wearer's head.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the 2-dimensional or 3-dimensional scan of the wearer's head is obtained by one of visual scanning techniques, ultrasound, non-invasive imaging, photography, 2D/3D mapping, x-ray, CT-scan, MRI, and infrared measurements, or a combination thereof.

12. The method of claim 9 , the determining head scan data further comprising determination of at least one anthromorphic landmark on the wearer's head and obtaining one or more physical measurements relative to the at least one anthromorphic landmark.

13. The method of claim 9 , wherein the at least one liner portion for placement within the selected helmet is selected from a plurality of pre-manufactured liner portions, and the plurality of pre-manufactured liner portions comprise a plurality of liner portions designed for placement at a variety of different positions within the selected helmet.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein the plurality of pre-manufactured liner portions include one or more of a left side pad liner, a right side pad liner, a front pad liner, a midline base pad liner, and a back pad liner, wherein the liners designed for each of the variety of different positions within the selected helmet are further available in one or more sizes.

15. The method of claim 9 , wherein the at least one liner portion for placement within the selected helmet are customized based on the specified one or more dimensions for the plurality of portions of the wearer's head.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein the at least one liner portion for placement within the selected helmet are customized to include one or more of a left side pad liner, a right side pad liner, a front pad liner, a midline base pad liner, and a back pad liner.

17. The method of claim 9 , wherein a first liner of the at least one liner portion has a first thickness, and a second liner of the at least one liner portion has a second thickness different than the first thickness, and wherein the first thickness and the second thickness are determined based on the one or more dimensions of the wearer's head.

18. The method of claim 17 , wherein the first liner and the second liner are configured to be positioned in different regions of the selected helmet.

19. The method of claim 17 wherein the first liner has a first surface configured to be positioned proximate the wearer's head, and the second liner has a second surface configured to be positioned proximate the wearer's head, and

wherein a first plane comprising the first surface is angled relative to a second plane comprising the second surface.

20. A protective football helmet comprising:

an outer shell having an outer surface and an inner surface, the outer shell sized in accordance with actual measurements of a wearer's head;

an impact absorbing layer, an outer surface of the impact absorbing layer coupled to the inner surface of the outer shell; and

a customizable liner system within the outer shell, the customizable liner system comprising a plurality of padded liner portions formed from a deformable material and configured to dissipate impact forces, wherein each padded liner of the plurality of padded liner portions has a thickness adapted to a shape of a wearer's head;

wherein at least one of the plurality of padded liner portions is shaped and sized in accordance with the actual measurements of the wearer's head.
