Abstract

A method for random access for beam failure recovery. In the method, a random access configuration for the beam failure recovery is received. In the event of a beam failure, a random access procedure is performed according to the random access configuration.

1. A method in a user equipment for random access for beam failure recovery comprising:

receiving random access configuration from a network device for the beam failure recovery;

determining whether a candidate beam for the beam failure recovery is configured with contention free random access resource or contention based random access resource, based on the random access configuration;

when the determined candidate beam is configured with the contention free random access resource, performing contention free random access via the determined candidate beam; and

when the determined candidate beam is configured with the contention based random access resource, determining whether a downlink quality of the determined candidate beam is higher than that of any candidate beam configured with the contention free random access resource by a threshold, wherein:

when the downlink quality of the determined candidate beam is higher than that of any candidate beam configured with the contention free random access resource by the threshold, performing contention based random access via the determined candidate beam; and

when the downlink quality of the determined candidate beam is not higher than that of another candidate beam configured with the contention free random access resource by the threshold, performing the contention free random access via the another candidate beam.

2. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the performing the contention based random access via the determined candidate beam or performing the contention free random access via the another candidate beam is completed, when successful beam failure recovery is achieved.

3. The method according to claim 2 further comprising:

when the random access is completed with the successful beam failure recovery,

generating an indication that the random access is for the beam failure recovery.

4. The method according to claim 1 , wherein a procedure for the random access is stopped when a maximum number of preamble transmission attempts is reached or a radio link failure timer expires.

5. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the random access configuration comprises:

a maximum number of preamble transmission attempts;

a size of random access response window;

a contention free random access resource; or

any combination thereof.

6. The method according to claim 5 , wherein the contention free random access resource comprises:

a plurality of different random access resources reserved for the beam failure recovery;

one random access resource reserved for the beam failure recovery with multiple attempts to use; or

both the plurality of different random access resources reserved for the beam failure recovery and one random access resource reserved for the beam failure recovery with multiple attempts to use.

7. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the network device is a base station.

8. A user equipment for performing random access for beam failure recovery comprising:

a processor; and

a memory, said memory containing instructions which, when executed by the processor, cause the user equipment to:

receive random access configuration from a network device for the beam failure recovery;

determine whether a candidate beam for the beam failure recovery is configured with contention free random access resource or contention based random access resource, based on the random access configuration;

when the determined candidate beam is configured with the contention free random access resource, perform contention free random access via the determined candidate beam; and

when the determined candidate beam is configured with the contention based random access resource, determine whether a downlink quality of the determined candidate beam is higher than that of any candidate beam configured with the contention free random access resource by a threshold, wherein:

when the downlink quality of the determined candidate beam is higher than that of any candidate beam configured with the contention free random access resource by the threshold, perform contention based random access via the determined candidate beam; and

when the downlink quality of the determined candidate beam is not higher than that of another candidate beam configured with the contention free random access resource by the threshold, perform the contention free random access via the another candidate beam.

9. The user equipment according to claim 8 , wherein to perform the contention based random access via the determined candidate beam or to perform the contention free random access via the another candidate beam is completed, when successful beam failure recovery is achieved.

10. The user equipment according to claim 9 further comprising:

when the random access is completed with the successful beam failure recovery, to generate an indication that the random access is for the beam failure recovery.

11. The user equipment according to claim 8 , wherein a procedure for the random access is stopped when a maximum number of preamble transmission attempts is reached or a radio link failure timer expires.

12. The user equipment according to claim 8 , wherein the random access configuration comprises:

a maximum number of preamble transmission attempts;

a size of random access response window;

a contention free random access resource; or

any combination thereof.

13. The user equipment according to claim 12 , wherein the contention free random access resource comprises:

a plurality of different random access resources reserved for the beam failure recovery;

one random access resource reserved for the beam failure recovery with multiple attempts to use; or

both the plurality of different random access resources reserved for the beam failure recovery and one random access resource reserved for the beam failure recovery with multiple attempts to use.

14. The user equipment according to claim 8 , wherein the network device is a base station.

15. A non-transitory computer readable storage medium having a computer program stored thereon, the computer program which, when executed by a processor of a user equipment, cause the user equipment to perform operations for random access for beam failure recovery comprising:

receiving random access configuration from a network device for the beam failure recovery;

determining whether a candidate beam for the beam failure recovery is configured with contention free random access resource or contention based random access resource, based on the random access configuration;

when the determined candidate beam is configured with the contention free random access resource, performing contention free random access via the determined candidate beam; and

when the determined candidate beam is configured with the contention based random access resource, determining whether a downlink quality of the determined candidate beam is higher than that of any candidate beam configured with the contention free random access resource by a threshold, wherein:

when the downlink quality of the determined candidate beam is higher than that of any candidate beam configured with the contention free random access resource by the threshold, performing contention based random access via the determined candidate beam; and

when the downlink quality of the determined candidate beam is not higher than that of another candidate beam configured with the contention free random access resource by the threshold, performing the contention free random access via the another candidate beam.

16. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium according to claim 15 , wherein the performing the contention based random access via the determined candidate beam or performing the contention free random access via the another candidate beam is completed, when successful beam failure recovery is achieved.
