Abstract

Expandable collet bodies with sectional finger-based anti-rotation features are disclosed. The collet body comprises not only a plurality of gripping finger as a first part of a two-part anti-rotation means (ARM), but also a first part of a two part translation arresting means (TAM), which may or may not be sectional in nature and the TAM prevents over translation of a collet body within the work piece(s), and cooperates with a second part of the TAM associated with a work piece or an auxiliary structure. In this manner, a collet body inserted into a work piece or auxiliary structure will not accidentally be pushed beyond the blind side of the work piece(s) during insertion or initial clamp-up.

Claims (21)

1. A collet body for a single-side fastening system comprising:

a cylindrical wall portion positioned at an upper end of the collet body and defining a longitudinal axis and having a threaded inner surface and an outer surface which has a circular shape in cross-section that cuts through the longitudinal axis; and

one or more gripping fingers extended longitudinally from the cylindrical wall portion and separated by one or more slots, each finger having a protrusion at a fingertip, the protrusion comprising a leading surface and a trailing surface, the one or more gripping fingers being flexible in a radial direction and biased to converge radially inward with the protrusion of each gripping finger within a radial area defined by the cylindrical wall portion, the one or more gripping fingers diverging radially outward when pushed radially outward to cause the protrusion(s) of the one or more gripping fingers beyond the radial area defined by the cylindrical wall portion;

wherein the one or more slots and the one or more gripping fingers are profiled to interact with a sleeve insert or a clip to prevent rotation of the collet body in relation to the sleeve insert or the clip.

2. The collet body of claim 1 , wherein the one or more gripping fingers are distributed uniformly along a circumference of the cylindrical wall portion.

3. The collet body of claim 1 , wherein the leading surface is sloped or beveled to act as a transition between an external diameter of the cylindrical wall portion and a maximum external diameter of the protrusion.

4. The collet body of claim 1 , wherein the trailing surface is orthogonal to the longitudinal axis when the one or more gripping fingers diverge radially outward.

5. The collet body of claim 1 , wherein the one or more gripping fingers are radial cut fingers or chord cut fingers.

6. A collet body, comprising:

an upper wall portion positioned at an upper end of the collet body and having a cylindrical cross-sectional along a longitudinal axis and including a threaded inner surface and an outer surface which has a circular shape in cross-section that cuts through the longitudinal axis; and

a first gripping finger longitudinally extending downward from the upper wall portion and adjacent to a first slot;

wherein the first gripping finger includes a protrusion at a tip;

wherein the protrusion comprises a lower surface and an upper surface;

wherein the first gripping finger is radially flexible;

wherein, in a non-expanded state, the first gripping finger is convergingly biased within a radial area defined by the upper wall portion;

wherein, in an expanded state, the first gripping finger extends radially outward beyond the radial area defined by the upper wall portion; and

wherein the first slot and the first gripping finger are profiled to interact with a sleeve insert or a clip to prevent rotation of the collet body in relation to the sleeve insert or the clip.

7. The collet body of claim 6 , further comprising a second gripping finger longitudinally extending downward from the upper wall portion, wherein the first slot is positioned between the first and the second gripping fingers and wherein the upper wall portion has a planar outer surface.

8. The collet body of claim 7 , wherein the first and second gripping fingers are symmetrically positioned with regard to a radius of the collet body.

9. The collet body of claim 6 , wherein the lower surface is beveled.

10. The collet body of claim 6 , wherein the first gripping finger has a chord cut profile.
