Abstract

A method implemented by a surgical instrument is disclosed. The surgical instrument includes first and second jaws and a flexible circuit including multiple sensors to optimize performance of a radio frequency (RF) device. The flexible circuit includes at least one therapeutic electrode couplable to a source of RF energy, at least two sensing electrodes, and at least one insulative layer. The insulative layer is positioned between the at least one therapeutic electrode and the at least two sensing electrodes. The method includes contacting tissue positioned between the first and second jaws of the surgical instrument with the at least one therapeutic electrode and at the least two sensing electrodes; sensing signals from the at least two sensing electrodes; and controlling RF energy delivered to the at least one therapeutic electrode based on the sensed signals.

Claims (39)

1. A surgical instrument for use in a surgical procedure, the surgical instrument comprising:

a first jaw; and

a second jaw moveable from an open position to a closed position;

a flexible electrode positioned on either the first jaw or the second jaw, the flexible electrode comprising:

a therapeutic electrode couplable to a source of radio frequency (RF) energy; and

a sensing electrode configured to measure data indicative of a parameter of a tissue in contact with the flexible electrode; and

a control circuit configured to:

receive the data from the sensing electrode during a tissue treatment; and

control an amount of RF energy delivered to the therapeutic electrode based on the data received during the tissue treatment.

2. The surgical instrument of claim 1 , further comprising an insulative layer positioned between the therapeutic electrode and the sensing electrode.

3. The surgical instrument of claim 2 , wherein a flexibility of the insulative layer is greater than:

a flexibility of the therapeutic electrode; and

a flexibility of the sensing electrode.

4. The surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein a parameter of the tissue comprises one of the following:

an impedance of the tissue;

an electrical continuity of the tissue; or

a temperature transition point in the tissue.

5. A surgical instrument for use in a surgical procedure, the surgical instrument comprising:

a flexible electrode comprising:

a therapeutic electrode couplable to a source of radio frequency (RF) energy; and

a sensing electrode configured to measure data indicative of a parameter of a tissue in contact with the flexible electrode;

a marking assembly; and

a control circuit configured to:

receive the data from the sensing electrode during a tissue treatment;

control an amount of RF energy delivered to the therapeutic electrode based on the data during the tissue treatment

receive data indicative of application of the tissue treatment by the surgical instrument to the tissue; and

control the marking assembly to apply a predetermined distinct marking to the tissue unique to the applied tissue treatment, wherein the predetermined distinct marking distinguishes the tissue treatment application from other tissue treatment applications.

6. The surgical instrument of claim 5 , wherein the marking assembly comprises a plurality of markers.

7. The surgical instrument of claim 6 , wherein at least one marker of the plurality of markers is activated to apply the predetermined distinct marking.

8. A surgical instrument for use in a surgical procedure, the surgical instrument comprising:

a therapeutic electrode couplable to a source of radio frequency (RF) energy;

a marking assembly; and

a control circuit configured to:

control an amount of RF energy delivered to the therapeutic electrode during a tissue treatment;

receive data indicative of application of the tissue treatment by the surgical instrument to the tissue; and

control the marking assembly to apply a predetermined distinct marking to the tissue unique to the applied tissue treatment, wherein the predetermined distinct marking distinguishes the tissue treatment application from other tissue treatment applications.
