Abstract

A self-healing network on-board a vehicle includes multiple wireless devices that are directly and communicatively interconnected via communications backbone(s). One of devices is collectively determined by the other devices to be a lead device of the network, and therefore establishes a wireless link (e.g., an only wireless link) communicatively connecting any of the self-healing network devices to other devices/servers on-board the vehicle and external to the network. Passenger-consumable content may be delivered between any device of the self-healing network and the other on-board, external devices via the lead wireless device, its established wireless link, and the communications backbone(s). Any wireless device of the self-healing network may serve as a hot spare for the lead wireless device, so that the self-healing network may automatically reconfigure to mitigate and recover from faults, e.g., by automatically forming multiple, mutually exclusive sub-self-healing networks, each of which has its own cooperatively selected lead wireless device.

Claims (35)

1. A method for delivering content for consumption by passengers on-board a vehicle, the method comprising:

storing, at a device on-board the vehicle, a mapping of portions of distributively stored passenger-consumable content and respective on-board storage locations, the respective on-board storage locations including a plurality of self-healing networks on-board the vehicle, each self-healing network of the plurality of self-healing networks having a respective, mutually-exclusive plurality of wireless devices storing a respective portion of the distributively stored passenger-consumable content, the respective, mutually-exclusive plurality of wireless devices of the each self-healing network including a respective lead wireless device providing an only wireless link communicatively connecting any device of the each self-healing network to one or more servers on-board the vehicle, and the device included in the plurality of lead wireless devices; and

routing, by the device based on the mapping, a requested portion of the passenger-consumable content stored in a first self-healing network to a requesting device included in a second self-healing network, the first self-healing network and the second self-healing network included in the plurality of self-healing networks.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the requested portion of the passenger-consumable content is a first requested portion, and the method further comprises routing, by the device, a second requested portion of the passenger-consumable content that is stored at the one or more servers to a respective requesting device included in one of the plurality of self-healing networks.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the device is included in the first self-healing network.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the device is included in the second self-healing network.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the device is included in a third self-healing network.

6. The method of claim 4 , wherein:

the requested portion of the passenger-consumable content is stored at another device included in the first self-healing network;

the method further comprises obtaining, from the lead wireless device of the first self-healing network, a copy of the requested portion and storing the copy of the requested portion at the lead wireless device of the second self-healing network; and

wherein routing the requested portion of the passenger-consumable content to the requesting device includes accessing the copy of the requested portion stored at the lead wireless device of the second self-healing network.

7. The method of claim 1 ,

further comprising updating, by the device, the mapping responsive to additional passenger-consumable content has been newly stored in one of the plurality of self-healing networks; and

routing, by the device, the additional passenger-consumable content to another requesting device based on the updated mapping.

8. A device for delivering content for consumption by passengers on-board a vehicle, the device disposed on-board the vehicle and the device comprising:

one or more memories storing a mapping of portions of distributively stored passenger-consumable content and respective on-board storage locations, the respective on-board storage locations including a plurality of self-healing networks on-board the vehicle, each self-healing network of the plurality of self-healing networks having a respective plurality of wireless devices storing a respective portion of the distributively stored passenger-consumable content, the respective plurality of wireless devices of the each self-healing network including a respective lead wireless device providing an only wireless link communicatively connecting any device of the each self-healing network to one or more servers on-board the vehicle, and the device included in the plurality of lead wireless devices; and

one or more processors executing computer-executable instructions stored on the one or more memories to thereby route, based on the mapping, a requested portion of the passenger-consumable content stored in a first self-healing network to a requesting device included in a second self-healing network, the first self-healing network and the second self-healing network included in the plurality of self-healing networks.

9. The device of claim 8 , wherein the requested portion of the passenger-consumable content is a first requested portion, and the one or more processors execute the computer-executable instructions to route a second requested portion of the passenger-consumable content that is stored at the one or more servers to a respective requesting device included in one of the plurality of self-healing networks.

10. The device of claim 8 , wherein the device is the lead wireless device of the first self-healing network.

11. The device of claim 8 , wherein the device is the lead wireless device of the second self-healing network.

12. The device of claim 8 , wherein the device is the lead wireless device of a third self-healing network.

13. The device of claim 11 , wherein:

the requested portion of the passenger-consumable content is stored at another device included in the first self-healing network;

the one or more processors execute the computer-executable instructions to thereby obtain a copy of the requested portion from the lead wireless device of the first self-healing network and store the copy of the requested portion at the lead wireless device of the second self-healing network; and

access the stored copy of the requested portion stored at the lead wireless device to route to the requesting device.

14. The device of claim 8 , wherein the one or more processors execute the computer-executable instructions to thereby:

update the mapping responsive to an indication that additional passenger-consumable content is newly stored in the plurality of self-healing networks; and

route requested portions of the passenger-consumable content to respective requesting devices based on the updated mapping.

15. A system for delivering content for consumption by passengers on-board a vehicle, the system comprising:

one or more servers disposed on-board the vehicle;

a plurality of self-healing networks disposed on-board the vehicle, each self-healing network of the plurality of self-healing networks having a respective lead wireless device providing an only wireless link communicatively connecting any device of the each self-healing network to the one or more servers; and

a mapping of portions of distributively stored passenger-consumable content and respective on-board storage locations, the respective on-board storage locations including the plurality of self-healing networks, and the mapping stored in one or more memories of the system and utilized by the system to at least one of: route, to the lead wireless device of a first self-healing network, a request, of a requesting device included in a second self-healing network, for particular passenger-consumable content stored in the first self-healing network, or route the particular passenger-consumable content to the lead wireless device of the second self-healing network, the first self-healing network and the second self-healing network included in the plurality of self-healing networks.

16. The system of claim 15 , wherein each of the one or more servers and at least one of the lead wireless device of the first self-healing network or the lead wireless device of the second self-healing network stores a respective instance of the mapping.

17. The system of claim 15 , wherein the lead wireless device of a particular self-healing network stores a copy of particular passenger-consumable content, the particular passenger-consumable content stored at another device of the plurality of self-healing networks, and the lead wireless device of the particular self-healing network accesses the copy responsive to a request for the particular passenger-consumable content.

18. The system of claim 15 , wherein a first portion of the plurality of wireless devices of the plurality of self-healing networks are operated by crew members of the vehicle and a second portion of the plurality of wireless devices are operated by passengers on-board the vehicle.
