Abstract

Methods and systems are described for new paradigms for user interaction with an unmanned aerial vehicle (referred to as a flying digital assistant or FDA) using a portable multifunction device (PMD) such as smart phone. In some embodiments, a user may control image capture from an FDA by adjusting the position and orientation of a PMD. In other embodiments, a user may input a touch gesture via a touch display of a PMD that corresponds with a flight path to be autonomously flown by the FDA.

Claims (49)

1. A computer-implemented method comprising:

providing, by a processor of an aerial vehicle, a visual representation of a field of view captured by sensors of the aerial vehicle to a remote device for presentation on a touch display of the remote device;

receiving, by the processor, via the touch display, a touch gesture indicative of a selection of a point or area in the visual representation;

identifying, by the processor, a point of reference in the physical environment corresponding to the selected point or area;

defining, by the processor, a reference plane corresponding to one or more identifiable physical surfaces in the physical environment;

generating, by the processor, a flight path relative to the identified point of reference and the reference plane; and

causing the aerial vehicle to autonomously fly along the generated flight path.

2. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , further comprising:

providing, by the processor, dynamic updates to the visual representation of the field of view of the physical environment from the aerial vehicle as the aerial vehicle autonomously flies along the generated flight path.

3. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 ,

wherein the generated flight path is a two dimensional path at a constant or substantially constant height above the reference plane.

4. The computer-implemented method of claim 3 , wherein the touch gesture is a single touch, and wherein the generated flight path is a substantially straight line along the reference plane towards the point of reference.

5. The computer-implemented method of claim 4 , further comprising:

focusing the field of view of the physical environment on the point of reference.

6. The computer-implemented method of claim 5 , wherein focusing image capture includes motion by the aerial vehicle along the two dimensional path to within a threshold proximity of the point of reference and adjustment by an image capture device associated with the aerial vehicle to center the point of reference in a field of view of the image capture device.

7. The computer-implemented method of claim 3 , wherein the touch gesture is drawn line, and wherein the two dimensional path along the reference plane is a projection of the drawn line.

8. The computer-implemented method of claim 3 , wherein the touch gesture is indicative of a selection of a preset paths, and wherein the two dimensional path along the reference plane is based on the selected preset paths.

9. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein identification of the point of reference in the physical environment corresponding to the selected point or area is based in part on sensor data gathered from sensors associated with the aerial vehicle.

10. A computer-implemented method comprising:

providing, by a processor of an aerial vehicle, a visual representation of a field of view captured by sensors of the aerial vehicle to a remote mobile device for presentation on a touch display of the remote mobile device;

receiving, by the processor, via the touch display, a touch gesture indicative of a selection of a point or area in the visual representation;

identifying, by the processor, a point of reference in the physical environment corresponding to the selected point or area;

adjusting, by the processor, the field of view captured by sensors of the aerial vehicle relative to the point of reference;

defining, by the processor, a reference plane corresponding to one or more identifiable physical surfaces in the physical environment; and

providing, by the processor, dynamic updates to the visual representation of the field of view of the physical environment from the aerial vehicle as the aerial vehicle autonomously flies along a generated flight path relative to the reference plane.

11. The computer-implemented method of claim 10 , wherein adjusting the field of view captured by sensors of the aerial vehicle relative to the point of reference comprise focusing the field of view of the physical environment on the point of reference.

12. The computer-implemented method of claim 11 , wherein focusing image capture includes motion by the aerial vehicle along a two dimensional path to within a threshold proximity of the point of reference and adjustment by an image capture device associated with the aerial vehicle to center the point of reference in a field of view of the image capture device.

13. The computer-implemented method of claim 10 , further comprising:

generating, by the processor, a flight path relative to the identified point of reference based on the touch gesture; and

causing the aerial vehicle to autonomously fly along the generated flight path.

14. The computer-implemented method of claim 11 ,

wherein the generated flight path is a two dimensional path at a constant or substantially constant height above the reference plane.

15. The computer-implemented method of claim 14 , wherein the touch gesture is a single touch, and wherein the generated flight path is a substantially straight line along the reference plane towards the point of reference.

16. The computer-implemented method of claim 14 , wherein the touch gesture is drawn line, and wherein the two dimensional path along the reference plane is a projection of the drawn line.

17. The computer-implemented method of claim 14 , wherein the touch gesture is indicative of a selection of a preset paths, and wherein the two dimensional path along the reference plane is based on the selected preset paths.

18. A computing apparatus comprising:

one or more non-transitory computer-readable storage media; and

program instructions stored on the one or more computer-readable storage media that, when executed by one or more processors of an aerial vehicle, direct the computing apparatus to at least:

provide a visual representation of a field of view captured by sensors of the aerial vehicle to a remote device for presentation on a touch display of the remote device;

receive, via the touch display, a touch gesture indicative of a selection of a point or area in the visual representation;

identify a point of reference in the physical environment corresponding to the selected point or area;

define a reference plane corresponding to one or more identifiable physical surfaces in the physical environment;

generate a flight path relative to the identified point of reference and the reference plane;

generate control commands configured to cause the aerial vehicle to autonomously fly along the generated flight path; and

execute the control commands to cause the aerial vehicle to autonomously fly along the generated flight path.

19. The computing apparatus of claim 18 , wherein the program instructions, when executed by the one or more processors, further direct the computing apparatus to:

provide dynamic updates to the visual representation of the field of view of the physical environment from the aerial vehicle as the aerial vehicle autonomously flies along the generated flight path.

20. The computing apparatus of claim 18 ,

wherein the generated flight path is a two dimensional path at a constant or substantially constant height above the reference plane.
