Abstract

A session management function (SMF) receives, from an access and mobility management function (AMF), a first request to establish a first session for a wireless device. The first request comprises a cellular internet-of-things (IoT) optimization indication for transfer of data of cellular IoT over a control plane. A second request to establish a second session between the SMF and the UPF is sent to a user plane function (UPF). The data for cellular IoT is received from the UPF via the second session. The data is sent to the AMF via the first session.

Claims (54)

1. A method comprising:

sending, by an access and mobility management function (AMF) to a session management function (SMF), a first request to establish a first session for a wireless device, the first request comprising a cellular internet-of-things (IoT) optimization indication for transfer of data of cellular IoT over a control plane, the cellular IoT optimization indication causing the SMF to send, to a user plane function (UPF) selected by the SMF, a second request to establish a second session between the SMF and the UPF; and

sending, by the AMF to the SMF, the data for cellular IoT via the first session to cause the SMF to forward the data for cellular IoT to the UPF via the second session.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first request comprises at least one of:

an identifier of the SMF; and

an address of the SMF.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first request comprises at least one of:

an identifier of the AMF; and

an address of the AMF.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving, by the AMF from the SMF, a response indicating an acceptance for configuration of the first session.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving, by the AMF from the wireless device, a non-access stratum (NAS) message indicating a request for data transmission over the control plane.

6. A method comprising:

sending, by an access and mobility management function (AMF) to a session management function (SMF), a first request to establish a first session for a wireless device, the first request comprising a cellular internet-of-things (IoT) optimization indication for transfer of data of cellular IoT over a control plane, the cellular IoT optimization indication causing the SMF to send, to a user plane function (UPF) selected by the SMF, a second request to establish a second session between the SMF and the UPF; and

receiving, by the AMF, the data for cellular IoT via the first session forwarded by the SMF which has received the data for cellular IoT via the second session from the UPF.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the first request comprises at least one of:

an identifier of the SMF; and

an address of the SMF.

8. The method of claim 6 , wherein the first request comprises at least one of:

an identifier of the AMF; and

an address of the AMF.

9. The method of claim 6 , further comprising:

receiving, by the AMF from the SMF, a response indicating an acceptance for configuration of the first session.

10. The method of claim 6 , further comprising:

receiving, by the AMF from the wireless device, a non-access stratum (NAS) message indicating a request for data transmission over the control plane.

11. An access and mobility management function (AMF) node comprising:

one or more communication interfaces;

one or more processors; and

one or more memories that store instructions which, when executed by the one or more processors, cause the one or more processors to perform:

sending, using the one or more communication interfaces to a session management function (SMF) node, a first request to establish a first session for a wireless device, the first request comprising a cellular internet-of-things (IoT) optimization indication for transfer of data of cellular IoT over a control plane, the cellular IoT optimization indication causing the SMF node to send, to a user plane function (UPF) node selected by the SMF node, a second request to establish a second session between the SMF node and the UPF node; and

sending, using the one or more communication interfaces to the SMF node, the data for cellular IoT via the first session to cause the SMF node to forward the data for cellular IoT to the UPF node via the second session.

12. An access and mobility management function (AMF) node comprising:

one or more communication interfaces;

one or more processors; and

one or more memories that store instructions which, when executed by the one or more processors, cause the one or more processors to perform:

sending, using the one or more communication interfaces to a session management function (SMF) node, a first request to establish a first session for a wireless device, the first request comprising a cellular internet-of-things (IoT) optimization indication for transfer of data of cellular IoT over a control plane, the cellular IoT optimization indication causing the SMF node to send, to a user plane function (UPF) node selected by the SMF node, a second request to establish a second session between the SMF node and the UPF node; and

receiving, using the one or more communication interfaces, the data for cellular IoT via the first session forwarded by the SMF node which has received the data for cellular IoT via the second session from the UPF node.

13. A session management function (SMF) node comprising:

one or more communication interfaces;

one or more processors; and

one or more memories that store instructions which, when executed by the one or more processors, cause the one or more processors to perform:

receiving, using the one or more communication interfaces from an access and mobility management function (AMF) node, a first request to establish a first session for a wireless device, the first request comprising a cellular internet-of-things (IoT) optimization indication for transfer of data of cellular IoT over a control plane;

sending, using the one or more communication interfaces to a user plane function (UPF) node, a second request to establish a second session between the SMF node and the UPF node;

receiving, using the one or more communication interfaces from the AMF node, the data for cellular IoT via the first session; and

sending, using the one or more communication interfaces to the UPF node, the data via the second session.

14. A session management function (SMF) node comprising:

one or more communication interfaces;

one or more processors; and

one or more memories that store instructions which, when executed by the one or more processors, cause the one or more processors to perform:
