Abstract

Systems and methods for recommending a media asset relating to a character unknown to a user are provided herein. The systems and methods may receive a first media asset viewed by a user, determine a first character in the first media asset, and include the first character in the character viewing profile for the user. Further, the systems and methods may receive a second media asset, including the first character, determine that a second character appears in the second media asset, and determine that the second character is not in the character viewing profile. The systems and methods may recommend a third media asset to the user for the second character.

Claims (71)

1. A method comprising:

accessing a media asset comprising a plurality of media segments, each of the plurality of media segments comprising one or more video frames of the media asset;

for each respective media segment of the plurality of media segments:

(a) determining whether a character appears in at least one video frame of the respective media segment; and

(b) increasing a counter in response to determining that the character appears in the at least one video frame of the respective media segment; and

in response to determining that the counter is greater than a threshold number of the plurality of media segments:

transmitting, to a device, a recommendation for the media asset.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the transmitting the recommendation for the media asset to the device is performed in response to determining that a user profile associated with the device indicated a preference for the character.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

accessing video characteristics of the character, wherein the determining whether the character appears in the at least one video frame of the respective media segment is based on the video characteristics of the character.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the video characteristics of the character are facial characteristics of the character, and wherein the determining whether the character appears in the at least one video frame of the respective media segment uses facial recognition techniques.

5. The method of claim 3 , wherein the determining whether the character appears in the at least one video frame of the respective media segment comprises:

extracting a set of video frames from the respective media segment;

selecting a video frame from the set of video frames; and

determining whether the character is in the selected video frame based on the video characteristics of the character.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

accessing audio characteristics of the character, and wherein the determining whether the character appears in the at least one video frame of the respective media segment comprises:

extracting a set of words relating to the one or more video frames of the respective media segment;

selecting a word from the set of words; and

determining whether the character said the word, based on the audio characteristics of the character.

7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

accessing a name for the character, and wherein the determining whether the character appears in the at least one video frame of the respective media segment comprises:

extracting a set of words relating to the one or more video frames of the respective media segment;

selecting a word from the set of words; and

determining whether the name of the character is the word.

8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

splitting the media asset into the plurality of media segments, wherein each media segment contains an equal portion of a data structure associated with the media asset.

9. A system comprising:

control circuitry configured to:

access a media asset comprising a plurality of media segments, each of the plurality of media segments comprising one or more video frames of the media asset; and

for each respective media segment of the plurality of media segments:

(a) determine whether a character appears in at least one video frame of the respective media segment; and

(b) increase a counter in response to determining that the character appears in the at least one video frame of the respective media segment; and

input/output circuitry configured to:

in response to the control circuitry determining that the counter is greater than a threshold number of the plurality of media segments:

transmit, to a device, a recommendation for the media asset.

10. The system of claim 9 , wherein the input/output circuitry is configured to transmit the recommendation for the media asset to the device in response to the control circuitry determining that a user profile associated with the device indicated a preference for the character.

11. The system of claim 9 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to:

access video characteristics of the character, wherein the control circuitry is configured to determine whether the character appears in the at least one video frame of the respective media segment based on the video characteristics of the character.

12. The system of claim 11 , wherein the video characteristics of the character are facial characteristics of the character, and wherein the control circuitry is configured to determine whether the character appears in the at least one video frame of the respective media segment by using facial recognition techniques.

13. The system of claim 11 , wherein the control circuitry is configured to determine whether the character appears in the at least one video frame of the respective media segment, by:

extracting a set of video frames from the respective media segment;

selecting a video frame from the set of video frames; and

determining whether the character is in the selected video frame based on the video characteristics of the character.

14. The system of claim 9 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to:

access audio characteristics of the character, and wherein the control circuitry is configured to determine whether the character appears in the at least one video frame of the respective media segment, by:

extracting a set of words relating to the one or more video frames of the respective media segment;

selecting a word from the set of words; and

determining whether the character said the word, based on the audio characteristics of the character.

15. The system of claim 9 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to:

access a name for the character, and wherein the control circuitry is configured to determine whether the character appears in the at least one video frame of the respective media segment, by:

extracting a set of words relating to the one or more video frames of the respective media segment;

selecting a word from the set of words; and

determining whether the name of the character is the word.

16. The system of claim 9 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to:

split the media asset into the plurality of media segments, wherein each media segment contains an equal portion of a data structure associated with the media asset.

17. A non-transitory computer-readable medium having instructions encoded thereon that when executed by control circuitry cause the control circuitry to:

access a media asset comprising a plurality of media segments, each of the plurality of media segments comprising one or more video frames of the media asset;

for each respective media segment of the plurality of media segments:

(a) determine whether a character appears in at least one video frame of the respective media segment; and

(b) increase a counter in response to determining that the character appears in the at least one video frame of the respective media segment; and

in response to determining that the counter is greater than a threshold number of the plurality of media segments:

transmit, to a device, a recommendation for the media asset.

18. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 17 , wherein the instructions cause the control circuitry to transmit the recommendation for the media asset to the device in response to determining that a user profile associated with the device indicated a preference for the character.

19. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 17 , wherein the instructions cause the control circuitry to further:

access video characteristics of the character, wherein the instructions cause the control circuitry to determine whether the character appears in the at least one video frame of the respective media segment based on the video characteristics of the character.

20. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 17 , wherein the instructions cause the control circuitry to further:

access audio characteristics of the character, and wherein the instructions cause the control circuitry to determine whether the character appears in the at least one video frame of the respective media segment by:

extracting a set of words relating to the one or more video frames of the respective media segment;

selecting a word from the set of words; and

determining whether the character said the word, based on the audio characteristics of the character.
