Abstract

Disclosed herein are various embodiments for a media device upgrading system with a native user interface. An embodiment operates by displaying a native user interface of a media device configured to operate in both a normal mode without an upgrader device and an upgrader mode when an upgrader device is connected to an input port of the media device. It is determined that the upgrader device is connected a command is received via the native user interface. It is determined that the command operates a software component, and the command is provided to the upgrader device. A response to executing the command is received from the upgrader device, and a response is displayed on the native user interface.

Claims (41)

1. A computer-implemented method, comprising:

displaying a native user interface of a media device configured to operate in both a normal mode without an upgrader device and an upgrader mode when the upgrader device is connected to an input port of the media device;

determining that the upgrader device is connected to the input port of the media device, wherein the native user interface of the media device is displayed during both the normal mode and the upgrader mode;

receiving, via the native user interface, a command at the media device;

determining that the command is associated with operating a software component of the media device, wherein both the media device and the upgrader device include operating systems configured to execute the command with regard to the software component;

providing the command to the upgrader device based on a determination that the media device is in the upgrader mode of operation;

receiving, from the upgrader device, a response to executing the command; and

providing, via the media device, the response to executing the command, wherein the response comprises a modification of what is displayed on the native user interface.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the upgrader device includes networking capabilities.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the media device includes firmware that is configured to process a request for operating a hardware component of the media device regardless of whether the media device is operating in the normal mode or the upgrader mode.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the media device includes a television, and wherein the software component includes an application configured to stream content for display on the television.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein a display of a command menu during the normal mode is identical to a display of the command menu during the upgrader mode via the native user interface.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the upgrader device is configured to execute the command faster than the media device.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the input port comprises a high-definition multimedia interface (HDMI) port.

8. A system comprising at least one processor configured to perform operations comprising:

displaying a native user interface of a media device configured to operate in both a normal mode without an upgrader device and an upgrader mode when the upgrader device is connected to an input port of the media device;

determining that the upgrader device is connected to the input port of the media device, wherein the native user interface of the media device is displayed during both the normal mode and the upgrader mode;

receiving, via the native user interface, a command at the media device;

determining that the command is associated with operating a software component of the media device, wherein both the media device and the upgrader device include operating systems configured to execute the command with regard to the software component;

providing the command to the upgrader device based on a determination that the media device is in the upgrader mode of operation;

receiving, from the upgrader device, a response to executing the command; and

providing, via the media device, the response to executing the command, wherein the response comprises a modification of what is displayed on the native user interface.

9. The system of claim 8 , wherein the upgrader device includes networking capabilities.

10. The system of claim 8 , wherein the media device includes firmware that is configured to process a request for operating a hardware component of the media device regardless of whether the media device is operating in the normal mode or the upgrader mode.

11. The system of claim 8 , wherein the media device includes a television, and wherein the software component includes an application configured to stream content for display on the television.

12. The system of claim 8 , wherein a display of a command menu during the normal mode is identical to a display of the command menu during the upgrader mode via the native user interface.

13. The system of claim 8 , wherein the upgrader device is configured to execute the command faster than the media device.

14. The system of claim 8 , wherein the input port comprises a high-definition multimedia interface (HDMI) port.

15. A non-transitory processor-readable medium having one or more instructions operational on a computing device which, when executed by a processor, cause the processor to perform operations comprising:

displaying a native user interface of a media device configured to operate in both a normal mode without an upgrader device and an upgrader mode when the upgrader device is connected to an input port of the media device;

determining that the upgrader device is connected to the input port of the media device, wherein the native user interface of the media device is displayed during both the normal mode and the upgrader mode;

receiving, via the native user interface, a command at the media device;

determining that the command is associated with operating a software component of the media device, wherein both the media device and the upgrader device include operating systems configured to execute the command with regard to the software component;

providing the command to the upgrader device based on a determination that the media device is in the upgrader mode of operation;

receiving, from the upgrader device, a response to executing the command; and

providing, via the media device, the response to executing the command, wherein the response comprises a modification of what is displayed on the native user interface.

16. The non-transitory processor-readable medium of claim 15 , wherein the upgrader device includes networking capabilities.

17. The non-transitory processor-readable medium of claim 15 , wherein the media device includes firmware that is configured to process a request for operating a hardware component of the media device regardless of whether the media device is operating in the normal mode or the upgrader mode.

18. The non-transitory processor-readable medium of claim 15 , wherein the media device includes a television, and wherein the software component includes an application configured to stream content for display on the television.

19. The non-transitory processor-readable medium of claim 15 , wherein a display of a command menu during the normal mode is identical to a display of the command menu during the upgrader mode via the native user interface.

20. The non-transitory processor-readable medium of claim 15 , wherein the upgrader device is configured to execute the command faster than the media device.
