Abstract

A server, includes a virtual machine identifier assigning section to assign an identifier of a virtual machine operating on the server; and a network interface to transmit a packet including a Layer 2 header information which includes the identifier of the virtual machine and a first packet field for a VLAN-Tag, wherein the network, interface transmits the packet to a packet encapsulate section which encapsulates a second packet field including the Layer 2 header information with a virtual network identifier representing a virtual network to which the virtual machine belongs.

Claims (55)

1. A method, comprising:

assigning a first virtual machine identifier (VMID) to a first virtual machine operating on a first server; and

configuring a packet, in a form of a Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) packet, to include a field that indicates the first VMID and a second VMID assigned to a second virtual machine operating on a second server, for the first server to use when communicating with the second server,

wherein the packet is configured to be identified by a switch, on a network connecting the first server and the second server, based on the first VMID and the second VMID in the packet.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the field is a virtual local area network (VLAN) tag field containing the first VMID and the second VMID, and further comprising:

inserting the VLAN tag field in the packet.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the field is a virtual local area network (VLAN) tag field containing the first VMID and the second VMID, and further comprising:

removing the VLAN tag field from the packet.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the field is at least a part of an address field in a header field of the packet, and further comprising:

converting the at least a part of the address field to the first VMID and the second VMID.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

incorporating at least one of the first VMID or the second VMID into at least one of a Media Access Control (MAC) address or an Internet Protocol (IP) address; and

assigning the at least one of the MAC address or the IP address to the first virtual machine.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

assigning a VLAN identifier (ID) to the first virtual machine as a group ID, wherein the VLAN ID is assigned to a VLAN tag field of the packet.

7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining a virtual private network (VPN) ID based on a MAC address field, an IP address field, and a VLAN tag field in the packet;

changing a destination of the packet; and

generating an encapsulated packet including the VPN ID.

8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

executing at least one of a hypervisor or a virtual machine monitor (VMM) to configure the packet.

9. An apparatus, comprising:

a memory; and

a processor configured to execute instructions stored in the memory to:

assign a first VMID to a first virtual machine operating on the apparatus; and

configure a packet, in a form of a TCP/IP packet, to include a field that indicates the first VMID and a second VMID assigned to a second virtual machine operating on a second apparatus, for the apparatus to use when communicating with the second apparatus,

wherein the packet is configured to be identified by a switch, on a network connecting the apparatus and the second apparatus, based on the first VMID and the second VMID in the packet.

10. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the field is a VLAN tag field containing the first VMID and the second VMID, and wherein the processor is further configured to execute instructions stored in the memory to:

insert the VLAN tag field in the packet.

11. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the field is a VLAN tag field containing the first VMID and the second VMID, and wherein the processor is further configured to execute instructions stored in the memory to:

remove the VLAN tag field from the packet.

12. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the field is at least a part of an address field in a header field of the packet, and wherein the processor is further configured to execute instructions stored in the memory to:

convert the at least a part of the address field to the first VMID and the second VMID.

13. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the processor is further configured to execute instructions stored in the memory to:

incorporate at least one of the first VMID or the second VMID into at least one of a MAC address or an IP address; and

assign the at least one of the MAC address or the IP address to the first virtual machine.

14. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the processor is further configured to execute instructions stored in the memory to:

assign a VLAN ID to the first virtual machine as a group ID, wherein the VLAN ID is assigned to a VLAN tag field of the packet.

15. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the processor is further configured to execute instructions stored in the memory to:

determine a VPN ID based on a MAC address field, an IP address field, and a VLAN tag field in the packet;

change a destination of the packet; and

generate an encapsulated packet including the VPN ID.

16. A non-transitory computer readable medium storing instructions operable to cause one or more processors to perform operations comprising:

assigning a first VMID to a first virtual machine operating on a first server; and

configuring a packet, in a form of a TCP/IP packet, to include a field that indicates the first VMID and a second VMID assigned to a second virtual machine operating on a second server, for the first server to use when communicating with the second server,

wherein the packet is configured to be identified by a switch, on a network connecting the first server and the second server, based on the first VMID and the second VMID in the packet.

17. The non-transitory computer readable medium storing instructions of claim 16 , wherein the field is a VLAN tag field containing the first VMID and the second VMID, the operations further comprising:

inserting the VLAN tag field in the packet.

18. The non-transitory computer readable medium storing instructions of claim 16 , wherein the field is a VLAN tag field containing the first VMID and the second VMID, the operations further comprising:

removing the VLAN tag field from the packet.

19. The non-transitory computer readable medium storing instructions of claim 16 , wherein the field is at least a part of an address field in a header field of the packet, the operations further comprising:

converting the at least a part of the address field to the first VMID and the second VMID.

20. The non-transitory computer readable medium storing instructions of claim 16 , the operations further comprising:

incorporating at least one of the first VMID or the second VMID into at least one of a MAC address or an IP address; and

assigning the at least one of the MAC address or the IP address to the first virtual machine.
