Abstract

A thermal insulation article includes a thermally insulating pad shaped to be positioned in a cavity of a rectangular prism shipping container. The pad includes a solid compostable panel formed primarily of starch and/or plant fiber pulp that holds together as a single unit, and a water-proof or water-resistant film forming a pocket enclosing the panel. The panel includes a first section, a second section, and a third section connecting the first section to the second section, the first and second section each having a central portion and two flaps that extend from the central portion beyond the third section, and wherein the panel is foldable into an open box.

Claims (31)

1. A thermal insulation article for placement in a shipping container to hold an item, comprising:

a thermally insulating pad shaped to be positioned in a cavity of a rectangular prism shipping container to be adjacent to and cover from two to five of out of a floor, four side walls and cover of the container while leaving an interior space to receive the item, wherein the thermally insulating pad includes

a panel comprising a porous layer that holds together as a single unit and is formed primarily of starch, the panel having opposite surfaces having a length and a width with a thickness between the opposite surfaces that is smaller than the length and the width, and

a paper film forming a pocket and surrounding the panel to prevent water from reaching the panel within the pocket, wherein the paper film is secured to the panel along a portion but not all of the opposite surfaces of the panel,

air in the pocket between the panel and the paper film,

wherein the pad is scored with the panel compressed along a line so as to be foldable into a plurality of rectangular sections dimensioned to substantially span whichever of the floor, plurality of side walls or cover that the rectangular sections are adjacent with the panel extending through the fold.

2. The article of claim 1 , comprising a water-repellant coating on the paper film.

3. The article of claim 2 , wherein the water-repellant coating comprises a wax.

4. The article of claim 1 , wherein the pad is scored along at least two lines so as to be foldable into three rectangular sections.

5. The article of claim 4 , wherein the at least two lines are parallel.

6. The article of claim 5 , wherein the pad is scored along just the two lines so as to be foldable into exactly three rectangular sections.

7. The article of claim 1 , wherein the paper film is secured to the panel by an adhesive.

The article of claim 1 , wherein the paper film includes a first sheet on a first side of the panel and a second sheet on a second opposite side of the panel, and the first sheet and the second sheet are joined along edges that extend around an entire perimeter of the panel to form the pocket that encloses the panel.

9. The article of claim 8 , wherein the first sheet and second sheet form a seal no more than about an inch from an edge of the panel.

10. The article of claim 8 , wherein the paper film is heat sealed along opposing edges of the panel.

11. The article of claim 1 , wherein the starch comprises a grain starch, a root starch, a vegetable starch, or combinations thereof.

12. The article of claim 11 , wherein the starch comprises a root starch.

13. The article of claim 1 , wherein the panel has a thickness between about ¼ and 1 inch.

14. The article of claim 1 , wherein the pad is scored to form a recess that extends through about 50-75% of the thickness of the panel.

15. The article of claim 1 , wherein the pad has a density of 0.6-1.0 g/cm 3 .

16. A thermal insulation article for placement in a shipping container to hold an item, comprising:

a thermally insulating pad shaped to be positioned in a cavity of a rectangular prism shipping container to be adjacent to and cover from two to five of out of a floor, four side walls and cover of the container while leaving an interior space to receive the item, wherein the thermally insulating pad includes

a panel comprising a porous layer having bumps and that holds together as a single unit and is formed primarily of starch, the panel having opposite surfaces having a length and a width with a thickness between the opposite surfaces that is smaller than the length and the width, and

a paper film forming a pocket and surrounding the panel to prevent water from reaching the panel within the pocket, wherein the paper film is secured to the panel along a portion but not all of the opposite surfaces of the panel, wherein the paper film forming the pocket includes two parallel sheets joined along an edge that is no more than about an inch from an edge of the panel,

air in the pocket between the panel and the paper film,

wherein the pad is scored with the panel compressed along exactly two parallel lines so as to be foldable into exactly three rectangular sections dimensioned to substantially span whichever of the floor, plurality of side walls or cover that the rectangular sections are adjacent with the panel extending through the fold.

17. A thermal insulation article for placement in a shipping container to hold an item, comprising:

a thermally insulating pad shaped to be positioned in a cavity of a rectangular prism shipping container to be adjacent to and cover from two to five of out of a floor, four side walls and cover of the container while leaving an interior space to receive the item, wherein the thermally insulating pad includes

a plurality of panel sections, each panel section comprising a porous layer that holds together as a single unit and is formed primarily of starch, and

a paper film surrounding the plurality of panel sections to prevent water from reaching the panel sections,

air in a pocket between the panel sections and the paper film, wherein the pad is scored between the panel sections by compression along a line so as to be foldable into a plurality of rectangular sections dimensioned to substantially span whichever of the floor, plurality of side walls or cover that the rectangular sections are adjacent.
