Staple cartridge assembly comprising various tissue compression gaps and staple forming gaps
An end effector including an anvil and a staple cartridge assembly is disclosed. The staple cartridge assembly comprises a deck having steps defined thereon for compressing tissue positioned between the anvil and the staple cartridge assembly to different pressures. The staple cartridge assembly further comprises staples having different unformed heights removably stored therein. The staples are deformed against the anvil to different formed heights.
1. A staple cartridge, comprising:
(a) a deck defining a longitudinal axis;
(b) a staple cavity defined in said deck, wherein said staple cavity comprises:
(i) a first cavity wall extending orthogonally from said deck; and
(ii) a second cavity wall extending orthogonally from said deck;
(c) a staple removably stored in said staple cavity, wherein said staple comprises:
(i) a base; and
(ii) a leg extending from said base, wherein said leg comprises a round cross-sectional shape; and
(d) a ridge extending from said deck, wherein said leg is movable along said ridge during a staple firing stroke, and wherein said ridge comprises:
(i) a first ridge wall extending from said first cavity wall, wherein said first ridge wall is orthogonally positioned relative to said longitudinal axis;
(ii) a second ridge wall extending from said second cavity wall, wherein said second ridge wall extends directly from said first ridge wall in a direction parallel to said longitudinal axis; and
(iii) a curved surface extending from said deck to said first ridge wall and said second ridge wall.

The staple cartridge of claim 1 , wherein said ridge comprises a first ridge, wherein said leg comprises a first leg, wherein staple further comprises a second leg extending from said base, wherein said staple cartridge further comprises a second ridge extending from said deck, and wherein said second leg is movable along said second ridge during the staple firing stroke.
3. The staple cartridge of claim 2 , wherein said second ridge comprises:
a third ridge wall;
a fourth ridge wall extending orthogonally from said third ridge wall; and
a second curved surface extending from said deck to said third ridge wall and said fourth ridge wall.
4. The staple cartridge of claim 1 , wherein said leg comprises a first leg, wherein said staple further comprises a second leg, wherein said first leg and said second leg define a leg plane, and wherein said base defines a base plane offset from said leg plane.
5. The staple cartridge of claim 4 , wherein said first cavity wall defines a cavity plane, and wherein said leg plane and said base plane are parallel to said cavity plane.
6. The staple cartridge of claim 1 , wherein said staple cavity further comprises a third cavity wall, and wherein said ridge further comprises a third ridge wall extending from said third cavity wall.
7. The staple cartridge of claim 1 , wherein said curved surface is positioned at an intersection of said first and second ridge walls.
8. A staple cartridge, comprising:
(a) a deck;
(b) a staple cavity defined in said deck, wherein said staple cavity comprises:
(i) a first cavity wall defining a first cavity plane; and
(ii) a second cavity wall defining a second cavity plane;
(c) a staple removably stored in said staple cavity, wherein said staple comprises:
(i) a base defining a base plane, wherein said base plane is parallel to said first cavity plane; and
(ii) a leg extending from said base, wherein said leg comprises a round cross-sectional shape; and
(d) an extension extending from said deck, wherein said leg is movable along said extension during a staple firing stroke, and wherein said extension comprises:
(i) a first extension wall extending within said first cavity plane;
(ii) a second extension wall extending within said second cavity plane, wherein said second extension wall extends orthogonally from said first extension wall; and
(iii) a curved surface extending from said deck, wherein said curved surface includes a first curvature extending from said deck to said first cavity plane, wherein said curved surface includes a second curvature that extends from said deck and intersects with said second cavity plane.
9. The staple cartridge of claim 8 , wherein said leg comprises a first leg, wherein said staple further comprises a second leg extending from said base, wherein said first leg and said second leg define a leg plane that is parallel to said first cavity plane.
10. The staple cartridge of claim 9 , wherein said leg plane is offset from said base plane.
11. The staple cartridge of claim 8 , wherein said extension comprises a first extension, wherein said leg comprises a first leg, wherein staple further comprises a second leg extending from said base, wherein said staple cartridge further comprises a second extension extending from said deck, and wherein said second leg is movable along said second extension during the staple firing stroke.
12. The staple cartridge of claim 11 , wherein said second extension comprises:
a third extension wall;
a fourth extension wall extending orthogonally from said third extension wall; and
a second curved surface extending from said deck.
13. The staple cartridge of claim 8 , wherein said staple cavity further comprises a third cavity wall, and wherein said extension further comprises a third extension wall extending from said third cavity wall.
14. A fastener cartridge, comprising:
(a) a deck;
(b) a cavity defined in said deck, wherein said cavity comprises cavity walls extending orthogonally from said deck;
(c) a fastener removably stored in said cavity, wherein said fastener comprises:
(i) a base;
(ii) a first leg extending from said base, wherein said first leg comprises a round cross-sectional shape and a tissue-piercing tip; and
(iii) a second leg extending from said base, wherein said second leg comprises a round cross-sectional shape and a tissue-piercing tip;
(d) a first projection extending from said deck, wherein said first leg is movable along said first projection during a staple firing stroke, and wherein said first projection comprises:
(i) a first projection wall extending from a first cavity wall of said cavity walls;
(ii) a second projection wall extending from a second cavity wall of said cavity walls, wherein said second projection wall extends directly from said first projection wall in an orthogonal direction; and
(iii) a first curved surface extending from said deck; and
(e) a second projection extending from said deck, wherein said second leg is movable along said second projection during the staple firing stroke, and wherein said second projection comprises:
(i) a third projection wall extending from a third cavity wall of said cavity walls;
(ii) a fourth projection wall extending from a fourth cavity wall of said cavity walls, wherein said fourth projection wall extends directly from said third projection wall in an orthogonal direction; and
(iii) a second curved surface extending from said deck.
15. The fastener cartridge of claim 14 , wherein said base defines a base plane, wherein said first leg and said second leg define a leg plane that is offset said base plane.
16. The fastener cartridge of claim 14 , wherein said first projection further comprises a fifth projection wall extending from a fifth cavity wall of said cavity walls, wherein said fifth projection wall extends orthogonally from said first projection wall.
17. The fastener cartridge of claim 16 , wherein said second projection further comprises a sixth projection wall extending from a sixth cavity wall of said cavity walls, wherein said sixth projection wall extends orthogonally from said third projection wall.
18. The fastener cartridge of claim 14 , wherein said base comprises an angled drive surface.
19. The staple cartridge of claim 8 , wherein said first curvature is connected to said second curvature by a third curvature positioned parallel to said deck.
