Abstract

High pressure magnetic coupling shrouds and methods of producing the same are disclosed herein. An example shroud disclosed herein includes an inner shell including a thermoplastic composite or a metal, and an outer shell including a composite material.

Claims (28)

1 . A shroud for a fluid pump comprising:

an inner shell including a thermoplastic composite; and

an outer shell including an inner radial surface directly coupled to an outer radial surface of the thermoplastic composite, the outer shell including a composite material, wherein the outer shell includes a thickness between 25 mils and 125 mils.

2 . The shroud of claim 1 , wherein the inner shell includes a nickel-based alloy.

3 . The shroud of claim 1 , wherein the thermoplastic composite is a polyetheretherketone.

4 . The shroud of claim 1 , wherein the composite material includes an epoxy resin.

5 . The shroud of claim 1 , wherein the composite material includes at least one of carbon fibers or graphite fibers.

6 . The shroud of claim 5 , wherein at least one of the carbon fibers or the graphite fibers are positioned in more than one orientation.

7 . The shroud of claim 1 , wherein the composite material includes fibers positioned in a first orientation, a second orientation different from the first orientation, a third orientation different from the first orientation and the second orientation, and a fourth orientation different from the first orientation, the second orientation, and the third orientation.

8 . The shroud of claim 7 , wherein the first orientation is substantially orthogonal to the second orientation.

9 . The shroud of claim 8 , wherein the third orientation is substantially orthogonal to the fourth orientation.

10 . The shroud of claim 1 , wherein the thermoplastic composite is a polyamide-imide.

11 . A magnetically driven pump comprising:

a first shaft;

a second shaft at least partially positioned around the first shaft, the second shaft magnetically engaged with the first shaft; and

a shroud positioned between the first shaft and the second shaft, the shroud including:

a composite shell, wherein the composite shell includes fibers positioned in a first orientation, a second orientation different from the first orientation, a third orientation different from the first orientation and the second orientation, and a fourth orientation different from the first orientation, the second orientation, and the third orientation, wherein the composite shell includes a thickness between 25 mils and 125 mils; and

a liner including an outer radial surface in contact with an inner radial surface of the composite shell, the liner including a thermoplastic.

12 . The magnetically driven pump of claim 11 , wherein the composite shell includes pores.

13 . The magnetically driven pump of claim 11 , wherein the composite shell includes fibers and an epoxy resin.

14 . The magnetically driven pump of claim 13 , wherein a ratio of eddy current loss caused by the shroud to a thickness of the liner is less than 0.06.

15 . The magnetically driven pump of claim 11 , wherein the fibers include at least one of carbon or graphite.

16 . The magnetically driven pump of claim 11 , wherein the liner includes a nickel-chromium based alloy.

17 . A shroud for a canned motor pump, the shroud comprising:

a composite shell including first fibers in a first orientation and second fibers in a second orientation, wherein the composite shell includes a thickness between 25 mils and 125 mils; and

an inner shell including an outer radial surface in contact with an inner radial surface of the composite shell, the inner shell including a thermoplastic.

18 . The shroud of claim 17 , wherein the composite shell includes third fibers in a third orientation and fourth fibers in a fourth orientation, the third orientation substantially orthogonal to the fourth orientation.

19 . The shroud of claim 17 , wherein the first orientation is approximately 45 degrees from the second orientation.
