Abstract

Methods of powering a radio that is mounted on a tower of a cellular base station are provided in which a direct current (“DC”) power signal is provided to the radio over a power cable and a voltage level of the output of the power supply is adjusted so as to provide a substantially constant voltage at a first end of the power cable that is remote from the power supply. Related cellular base stations and programmable power supplies are also provided.

Claims (24)

1 . An apparatus for providing direct current (DC) power to a radio, comprising:

a power supply comprising (a) a first input that is configured to receive a first DC power signal and (b) an output configured to be coupled to the radio through electrical conductors; and

wherein the power supply is configured to provide the output with a second DC power signal having a first voltage level;

wherein the power supply is further configured to adjust, at the output, the first voltage level of the second DC power signal and to provide, at ends of the electrical conductors that are remote from the power supply, a second voltage level of the second DC power signal that is larger than a nominal power signal voltage level of the radio and that is less than a maximum power signal voltage level of the radio.

2 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the first voltage level of the second DC power signal at the output is larger than a voltage level of the first DC power signal at the first input.

3 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the second voltage level of the second DC power signal is at least 4 volts larger than the nominal power signal voltage level of the radio.

4 . The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a second input; and

wherein the output is configured to be coupled to the radio and a measurement sensor through the electrical conductors;

wherein the second input is configured to receive, from the measurement sensor, a feedback signal which indicates receipt, by the measurement sensor, of the second voltage level of the second DC power signal.

The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the power supply is further configured to provide, at the ends of the electrical conductors that are remote from the power supply, the second voltage level of the second DC power signal that is larger than the nominal power signal voltage level of the radio and that is less than the maximum power signal voltage level of the radio notwithstanding a variation in a current level of the second DC power signal.

6 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the power supply further comprises a current sensor configured to measure a current level of the second DC power signal;

wherein the power supply is further configured to adjust, at the output, the first voltage level of the second DC power signal based on (a) variations in a measured current level of the second DC power signal and (b) a resistance of the electrical conductors.

7 . The apparatus of claim 6 , further comprising a user input circuit configured to receive the resistance of the electrical conductors or parameter values used to determine the resistance of the electrical conductors.

8 . A method of operating a power supply comprising a first power supply input and a power supply output, the method comprising:

receiving a first DC power signal at the first power supply input;

providing a second DC power signal having a first voltage level at the power supply output which is configured to be coupled to a radio through electrical conductors;

adjusting, at the power supply output, the first voltage level of the second DC power signal; and

providing, at ends of the electrical conductors that are remote from the power supply, a second voltage level of the second DC power signal that is larger than a nominal power signal voltage level of the radio and that is less than a maximum power signal voltage level of the radio.

9 . The method of claim 8 , wherein the first voltage level of the second DC power signal at the power supply output is larger than a voltage level of the first DC power signal at the first power supply input.

10 . The method of claim 8 , wherein the second voltage level of the second DC power signal is at least 4 volts larger than the nominal power signal voltage level of the radio.

The method of claim 8 , further comprising receiving, at a second power supply input of the power supply and from a measurement sensor coupled to the power supply output through the electrical conductors, a feedback signal which indicates receipt, by the measurement sensor, of the second voltage level of the second DC power signal.

The method of claim 8 , wherein providing, at the ends of the electrical conductors that are remote from the power supply, the second voltage level of the second DC power signal comprises providing, at the ends of the electrical conductors that are remote from the power supply, the second voltage level of the second DC power signal that is larger than the nominal power signal voltage level of the radio and that is less than the maximum power signal voltage level of the radio notwithstanding a variation in a current level of the second DC power signal.

The method of claim 8 , wherein adjusting, at the power supply output, the first voltage level of the second DC power signal comprises adjusting, at the power supply output, the first voltage level of the second DC power signal based on (a) variations in a measured current level of the second DC power signal and (b) a resistance of the electrical conductors.

14 . The method of claim 13 , further comprises receiving, at the power supply, the resistance of the electrical conductors or parameter values, used by the power supply, to determine the resistance of the electrical conductors.
