Abstract

Aspects of the present invention relate to methods and systems for providing a high transmission see-through view of the environment while trapping escaping light from the display system. In embodiments, a camera system is also provided that is aligned with the display system to provide images of the environment in a viewing direction of the user.

Claims (64)

1. An optical system comprising:

a first combiner of a wearable head device;

a second combiner of the wearable head device, the second combiner adapted to visually present image content such that a surrounding environment is visible to a user of the wearable head device through the second combiner while the image content is presented;

one or more light sources, the one or more light sources adapted to project image light onto the first combiner and the second combiner,

a first camera configured to capture a portion of first ambient light reflected by the first combiner;

a second camera configured to capture a portion of second ambient light reflected by the second combiner;

a first partial mirror adjustable to change a reflectivity associated with a first surface of the first combiner;

a second partial minor adjustable to change a reflectivity associated with a first surface of the second combiner; and

a processor configured to:

determine whether a brightness of the first ambient light exceeds a first threshold value,

in accordance with a determination that the brightness of the first ambient light exceeds the first threshold value, adjust the first partial minor to increase the reflectivity associated with a first surface of the first combiner,

in accordance with a determination that the brightness of the first ambient light does not exceed the first threshold value, forgo adjusting the first partial minor to increase the reflectivity associated with the first surface of the first combiner,

determine whether a brightness of the second ambient light exceeds a second threshold value,

in accordance with a determination that the brightness of the second ambient light exceeds the second threshold value, adjust the second partial mirror to increase a reflectivity associated with a first surface of the second combiner, and

in accordance with a determination that the brightness of the second ambient light does not exceed the second threshold value, forgo adjusting the second partial mirror to increase the reflectivity associated with the first surface of the second combiner,

wherein the first combiner is adapted to reflect, toward a first eye of a user, a first portion of the image light projected by the one or more light sources, and

wherein the second combiner is further adapted to reflect, toward a second eye of the user, a second portion of the image light projected by the one or more light sources.

2. The optical system of claim 1 , further comprising:

a first polarizer disposed between the first combiner and the first camera, the first polarizer configured to receive the portion of the first ambient light, and

a second polarizer disposed between the second combiner and the second camera, the second polarizer configured to receive the portion of the second ambient light.

3. The optical system of claim 2 , wherein,

the first polarizer includes a first antireflection coating and is further configured to absorb a first portion of the portion of the first ambient light, and

the second polarizer includes a second antireflection coating and is further configured to absorb a first portion of the portion of the second ambient light.

4. The optical system of claim 2 , wherein the first and second cameras are infrared cameras.

5. The optical system of claim 4 , wherein the portion of the first ambient light and the portion of the second ambient light comprise infrared light and the first and second cameras are configured to detect the infrared light.

6. The optical system of claim 5 , wherein the first polarizer and the second polarizer are further configured to transmit the infrared light.

7. The optical system of claim 1 , wherein,

the first camera is configured to remain fixed relative to the first eye of the user and is further configured to capture light from a field of view associated with the first eye of the user, and

the second camera is further configured to remain fixed relative to the second eye of the user and is further configured to capture light from a field of view associated with the second eye of the user.

The optical system of claim 1 , further comprising a transmissive display, the transmissive display comprising a rapidly switching minor configured to adjust an effective transmissivity and an effective reflectivity of the transmissive display, wherein the effective transmissivity and the effective reflectivity are adjustable by adjusting a rate at which the rapidly switching mirror switches between a first state and a second state.

9. The optical system of claim 8 , wherein:

the transmissive display comprises a curved display having a first curvature, and

the processor is further configured to provide display data associated with an image and to adjust the display data to compensate for an effect of the first curvature associated with the curved display on the reflected portion of the projected light.

10. The optical system of claim 1 , wherein the processor is further configured to:

determine whether the brightness of the first ambient light is below a third threshold value,

in accordance with a determination that the brightness of the first ambient light is below the third threshold value, adjust the first partial minor to increase a transmissivity of a second surface of the first combiner,

in accordance with a determination that the brightness of the ambient light is not below the third threshold value, forgo adjusting the first partial minor to increase the transmissivity of the second surface of the first combiner,

determine whether the brightness of the second ambient light is below a fourth threshold value,

in accordance with a determination that the brightness of the second ambient light is below the fourth threshold value, adjust the second partial mirror to increase a transmissivity of a second surface of the second combiner, and

in accordance with a determination that the brightness of the second ambient light is not below the fourth threshold value, forgo adjusting the second partial mirror to increase the transmissivity of the second surface of the second combiner.

11. The optical system of claim 1 , wherein the processor is further configured to:

determine a first difference between a brightness of a first portion of the image light received by a first surface of the first combiner and a brightness of the first ambient light received by a second surface of the first combiner;

adjust one or more of a reflectivity of the first surface of the first combiner and a transmissivity of the second surface of the first combiner based on the determined first difference;

determine a second difference between a brightness of a second portion of the image light received by a first surface of the second combiner and a brightness of the second ambient light received by a second surface of the first combiner; and

adjust one or more of a reflectivity of the first surface of the second combiner and a transmissivity of the second surface of the second combiner based on the determined second difference.

12. The optical system of claim 1 , wherein the processor is further configured to:

provide display data associated with an image;

identify, based on a captured image, a first position of an object in a surrounding environment;

in response to a movement of the wearable head device, identify a second position of the object,

adjust the display data based on a difference between the first position and the second position,

adjust, based on the difference between the first position and the second position, an optical characteristic of the first partial mirror, and

adjust, based on the difference between the first position and the second position, an optical characteristic of the second partial minor.

13. The optical system of claim 12 , wherein adjusting the display data comprises changing a position of the image light.

14. The optical system of claim 1 ,

wherein the processor is further configured to:

provide display data associated with an image;

determine whether the brightness of the first ambient light exceeds a fifth threshold value,

adjust the display data to increase a brightness of the image light in accordance with a determination that the brightness of the first ambient light exceeds the fifth threshold value,

determine whether the brightness of the second ambient light exceeds a sixth threshold value, and

adjust the display data to increase a brightness of the image light in accordance with a determination that the brightness of the second ambient light exceeds the sixth threshold value.

15. The optical system of claim 1 , wherein,

A first surface of the first combiner and a second surface of the first combiner are substantially planar having an optical flatness less than 20 times a wavelength of visible light, and

a first surface of the second combiner and a second surface of the second combiner are substantially planar having an optical flatness less than 20 times a wavelength of visible light.

16. The optical system of claim 1 , wherein a field of view of the first camera and a field of view of the second camera are coaxially aligned with a display field of view provided by the image light.
