Abstract

A disposable, wearable article can be used for collecting a sample and performing urinalysis. The article incorporates a test port feature to simplify this function. The test port has a resealable cover that can be used to selectively expose an aperture through the backsheet of the disposable article. The test port is used to position test devices, such as urine test strips to urine collected in the disposable article.

Claims (47)

1. An absorbent article, comprising:

a liquid pervious topsheet having a proximal surface facing toward a user when the article is in use and a distal surface facing away from the user;

an absorbent material positioned distally from the topsheet and extending across at least a portion of the topsheet distal surface;

a liquid impervious backsheet positioned distally from the absorbent material and topsheet, the backsheet comprising a through aperture; and

a cover positioned on a surface of the backsheet and selectively covering the backsheet aperture, the cover comprising:

a base layer overlapping with at least a portion of the backsheet, the base layer comprising a central portion and a peripheral portion;

an adhesive layer in a window frame shape around a perimeter of the base layer for adhering the base layer to the surface of the backsheet around a perimeter of the backsheet aperture; and

an outer layer adhered to, and covering, at least a portion of an outer surface of the base layer;

wherein the base layer central portion is adhered to the outer layer.

2. The absorbent article of claim 1 , wherein the cover is releasably attached to the backsheet such that the backsheet aperture may be uncovered without removing the absorbent article from the user.

3. The absorbent article of claim 1 , wherein the base layer comprises a die cut.

4. The absorbent article of claim 3 , wherein the die cut defines a perimeter portion of an aperture through the base layer.

5. The absorbent article of claim 1 , wherein the base layer peripheral portion is adhered to the backsheet.

6. The absorbent article of claim 1 , wherein the base layer central portion is not adhered to the backsheet.

7. An absorbent article, comprising:

a liquid pervious topsheet having a proximal surface facing toward a user when the article is in use and a distal surface facing away from the user;

an absorbent material positioned distally from the topsheet and extending across at least a portion of the topsheet distal surface;

a liquid impervious backsheet having a proximal surface and a distal surface and being positioned distally from the absorbent material, the backsheet comprising a through aperture;

a separation layer non-releasably attached to the backsheet and covering the backsheet aperture, the separation layer preventing exposure of the absorbent material through the backsheet aperture; and

a cover selectively covering the backsheet aperture and the separation layer.

8. The absorbent article of claim 7 , wherein the cover is positioned on the distal surface of the backsheet.

9. The absorbent article of claim 7 , wherein the cover comprises an adhesive layer around a perimeter of the backsheet aperture.

10. The absorbent article of claim 9 , wherein the cover comprises an outer layer adhered to, and covering, at least a portion of the backsheet distal surface.

11. An absorbent article, comprising:

a liquid pervious topsheet having a proximal surface facing toward a user when the article is in use and a distal surface facing away from the user;

an absorbent material positioned distally from the topsheet and extending across at least a portion of the topsheet distal surface;

a liquid impervious backsheet having a proximal surface and a distal surface and being positioned distally from the absorbent material, the backsheet comprising a through aperture;

a cover selectively covering the backsheet aperture, wherein the cover is adhered to the distal surface of the backsheet with a liquid impervious attachment around a periphery of the backsheet aperture; and

a separation layer being positioned proximally from the cover and extending over at least a portion of the backsheet aperture;

wherein the separation layer prevents contact with the absorbent material through the backsheet aperture; and

wherein the liquid impervious attachment of the cover extends around the entire periphery of the backsheet aperture.

12. The absorbent article of claim 11 , wherein the liquid impervious attachment of the cover extends uninterrupted around the entire periphery of the backsheet aperture.

13. The absorbent article of claim 11 wherein the separation layer is adhered to the proximal surface of the backsheet.

14. The absorbent article of claim 11 wherein the separation layer is adhered to the distal surface of the backsheet.

15. The absorbent article of claim 11 , wherein the liquid impervious attachment of the cover comprises an adhesive layer.

16. The absorbent article of claim 15 , wherein the adhesive layer forms a picture frame of adhesive around the backsheet aperture.

17. An absorbent article, comprising:

a liquid pervious topsheet having a proximal surface facing toward a user when the article is in use and a distal surface facing away from the user;

an absorbent material positioned distally from the topsheet and extending across at least a portion of the topsheet distal surface;

a liquid impervious backsheet having a proximal surface and a distal surface and being positioned distally from the absorbent material, the backsheet comprising a through aperture;

a cover selectively covering the backsheet aperture, wherein the cover is adhered to the distal surface of the backsheet with a liquid impervious attachment around a periphery of the backsheet aperture; and

a separation layer being positioned proximally from the cover and extending over at least a portion of the backsheet aperture;

wherein the separation layer prevents contact with the absorbent material through the backsheet aperture;

wherein the liquid impervious attachment of the cover comprises an adhesive layer; and

wherein the adhesive layer forms a picture frame of adhesive around the backsheet aperture.

18. The absorbent article of claim 17 , wherein the liquid impervious attachment of the cover extends around the entire periphery of the backsheet aperture.

19. The absorbent article of claim 17 , wherein the liquid impervious attachment of the cover extends uninterrupted around the entire periphery of the backsheet aperture.
