Abstract

A light detection and ranging system can have an optical sensor connected to an alias module. The optical sensor can have an emitter along with a first detector and a second detector. The alias module may be configured to characterize a detected return photon as an alias. The configuration of the detectors allows light beam walk to be corrected by the alias module.

Claims (28)

1 . A light detection and ranging system comprising a controller connected to a light source, a first detector, and a second detector, the controller configured to characterize a photon as an alias in response to readings from the first detector and the second detector.

2 . The light detection and ranging system of claim 1 , wherein the first detector has a matching configuration as the second detector.

3 . The light detection and ranging system of claim 1 , wherein the first detector has a dissimilar configuration then the second detector.

4 . The light detection and ranging system of claim 1 , wherein an alias circuit of the controller characterizes the photon and identifies an alias condition.

5 . A method comprising:

activating a first detector, with a controller, to sense photons returning from one or more downrange targets;

identifying, with the controller, an alias condition from the sensed photons; and

activating a second detector, with the controller, to correct the alias condition.

6 . The method of claim 5 , wherein the alias condition corresponds with light beams inadvertently shifting once reflected from the one or more downrange targets.

7 . The method of claim 5 , wherein the alias condition corresponds with signal ambiguity for the first detector.

8 . The method of claim 7 , wherein the first detector is a frequency-modulated continuous wave sensor.

9 . The method of claim 5 , wherein the first detector and second detector are concurrently active to correct the alias condition.

10 . The method of claim 5 , wherein the first detector and second detector operate sequentially to correct the alias condition.

11 . The method of claim 5 , wherein the second detector operates with different photon detecting characteristics than the first detector.

12 . The method of claim 5 , wherein the controller applies a filter to the second detector to correct the alias condition.

13 . A method comprising:

activating a first detector, with a controller, to sense photons returning from one or more downrange targets;

generating a strategy, with the controller, that prescribes operational conditions to effect a theme chosen by the controller;

identifying, with the controller, an alias condition from the sensed photons;

altering at least one operational condition of the first detector, in accordance with the strategy, in response to the alias condition; and

activating a second detector, with the controller, to correct the alias condition.

14 . The method of claim 13 , wherein the theme is power consumption savings.

15 . The method of claim 13 , wherein the theme is downrange target detection reliability.

16 . The method of claim 13 , wherein the theme is downrange target detection speed.

17 . The method of claim 13 , wherein the theme is downrange target detection field of view.

18 . The method of claim 13 , wherein the at least one operational condition is pulse width.

19 . The method of claim 13 , wherein the at least one operational condition is wavelength.

20 . The method of claim 13 , wherein the at least one operational condition is direction of light beam transmission from an emitter connected to the controller.
