Abstract

Techniques for providing data retention services based on a geographic region are disclosed. In one aspect, a location of a computing device is determined. A geographic entity corresponding to the location of the computing device is then determined. A data retention policy is assigned to data of the computing device based on regulations of the geographic entity. Other aspects are also disclosed.

Claims (59)

1. A system, comprising:

one or more processors for implementing a process using virtualized computing resources, the one or more processors configured to:

determine a current geographic location of a mobile computing device, wherein the mobile computing device generates production copies of data;

determine a geographic region corresponding to the current geographic location of the mobile computing device;

determine that the current geographic location of the mobile computing device has changed from a prior location of the mobile computing device;

based on the geographic region corresponding to the current geographic location of the mobile computing device, determine at least one data storage rule applicable to the geographic region corresponding to the current geographic location of the mobile computing device,

wherein the at least one data storage rule is based on data retention regulations for the determined geographic region; and

update an information management policy assigned to the mobile computing device,

wherein updating the information management policy comprises updating one or more variables associated with the information management policy for performing data management operations on data assigned to the information management policy,

wherein the one or more variables for performing data management operations are in accordance with the at least one data storage rule,

wherein the information management policy is updated, at least in part, in response to the determining that the current geographic location of the mobile computing device has changed from the prior location of the mobile computing device.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the information management policy indicates:

a frequency with which secondary copies of the production copies of the data are made.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the information management policy indicates:

a location to which secondary copies of the production copies of the data are stored.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the information management policy indicates:

one or more types of secondary copies of the production copies of the data to be made.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the information management policy indicates:

security measures to be applied to at least some of the production copies of the data.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more processors is further configured to: delete at least some of the production copies of the data generated by the mobile computing device.

7. A mobile computing device, the mobile computing device configured to:

determine a current geographic location of a mobile computing device, wherein the mobile computing device generates production copies of data;

transmit the current geographic location to a storage manager hosted by a cloud computing environment, wherein the storage manager is configured to:

determine a geographic region corresponding to the current geographic location of the mobile computing device;

based on the geographic region corresponding to the current geographic location of the mobile computing device, determine at least one data storage rule applicable to the geographic region corresponding to the current geographic location of the mobile computing device,

wherein the at least one data storage rule is based on data retention regulations for the determined geographic region; and

update an information management policy assigned to the mobile computing device,

wherein updating the information management policy comprises updating one or more variables associated with the information management policy for performing data management operations on data assigned to the information management policy,

wherein the one or more variables for performing data management operations are updated to be in accordance with the at least one data storage rule,

wherein the information management policy is updated, at least in part, in response to the determining that the current geographic location of the mobile computing device has changed from a prior location of the mobile computing device;

receive instructions to update the information management policy; and

in response to receiving instructions to update the information management policy, modify security measures to be applied to at least some of the production copies of the data.

8. The mobile computing device of claim 7 , wherein the information management policy indicates:

a frequency with which secondary copies of the production copies of the data are made.

9. The mobile computing device of claim 7 , wherein the information management policy indicates:

a location to which secondary copies of the production copies of the data are stored.

10. The mobile computing device of claim 7 , wherein the information management policy indicates:

one or more types of secondary copies of the production copies of the data to be made.

11. The mobile computing device of claim 7 , further configured to: delete at least some of the production copies of the data generated by the mobile computing device.

12. A computer-implemented method, the computer-implemented method comprising:

using cloud computing resources:

determine a current geographic location of a mobile computing device, wherein the mobile computing device generates production copies of data;

determine a geographic region corresponding to the current geographic location of the mobile computing device;

determine that the current geographic location of the mobile computing device has changed from a prior location of the mobile computing device;

based on the geographic region corresponding to the current geographic location of the mobile computing device, determine at least one data storage rule applicable to the geographic region corresponding to the current geographic location of the mobile computing device,

wherein the at least one data storage rule is based on data retention regulations for the determined geographic region; and

update an information management policy assigned to the mobile computing device,

wherein updating the information management policy comprises updating one or more variables associated with the information management policy for performing data management operations on data assigned to the information management policy,

wherein the one or more variables for performing data management operations are updated to be in accordance with the at least one data storage rule,

wherein the information management policy is updated, at least in part, in response to the determining that the current geographic location of the mobile computing device has changed from the prior location of the mobile computing device.

13. The computer-implemented method of claim 12 , wherein the information management policy indicates:

a frequency with which secondary copies of the production copies of the data are made.

14. The computer-implemented method of claim 12 , wherein the information management policy indicates:

a location to which secondary copies of the production copies of the data are stored.

15. The computer-implemented method of claim 12 , wherein the information management policy indicates:

one or more types of secondary copies of the production copies of the data to be made.

16. The computer-implemented method of claim 12 , wherein the information management policy indicates:

security measures to be applied to at least some of the production copies of the data.

17. The computer-implemented method of claim 12 , wherein the computer-implemented method further comprising deleting at least some of the production copies of the data generated by the mobile computing device.
