Abstract

A method for adjusting the operation of a surgical instrument using machine learning in a surgical suite is disclosed.

Claims (29)

1. A method for adjusting the operation of a surgical instrument using machine learning in a surgical suite, wherein said method comprises:

gathering data during surgical procedures, wherein the surgical procedures include the use of a surgical instrument comprising jaws movable through a closure stroke, and wherein gathering data comprises monitoring the position of the jaws relative to one another throughout a movement of the jaws during use of the surgical instrument;

analyzing the gathered data to determine an appropriate operational adjustment of the surgical instrument in a future use of the surgical instrument; and

adjusting the operation of the surgical instrument to improve the operation of the surgical instrument.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein gathering data comprises storing data in a surgical hub.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the surgical instrument is attached to a surgical robot and is configured to be operated manually by a clinician.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein adjusting the operation of the surgical instrument comprises adjusting a final tissue gap defined between the jaws.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein adjusting the operation of the surgical instrument comprises adjusting a speed of the jaws.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein gathering data comprises monitoring the movement of the jaws during use of the surgical instrument using a force detection circuit.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein adjusting the operation of the surgical instrument comprises placing a power control program of a surgical robot to which the surgical instrument is attached in a limp mode.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein gathering data comprises accessing existing information based on previous operations.

9. A method for adjusting the operation of a surgical instrument using machine learning in a surgical suite, wherein said method comprises:

gathering data during surgical procedures, wherein the surgical procedures include the use of a surgical instrument comprising jaws movable through an opening stroke, and wherein gathering data comprises monitoring the position of the jaws relative to one another throughout a movement of the jaws during use of the surgical instrument;

analyzing the gathered data to determine an appropriate operational adjustment of the surgical instrument in a future use of the surgical instrument; and

adjusting the operation of the surgical instrument to improve the operation of the surgical instrument.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein gathering data comprises storing data in a surgical hub.

11. The method of claim 9 , wherein adjusting the operation of the surgical instrument comprises adjusting a final open distance defined between the jaws.

12. The method of claim 9 , wherein adjusting the operation of the surgical instrument comprises adjusting a speed of the jaws.

13. The method of claim 9 , wherein gathering data comprises monitoring the movement of the jaws during use of the surgical instrument using a force detection circuit.

14. The method of claim 9 , wherein gathering data comprises accessing existing information based on previous operations.

15. A method for adjusting the operation of a surgical instrument using machine learning in a surgical suite, wherein said method comprises:

gathering data during surgical procedures, wherein the surgical procedures include the use of a surgical instrument comprising clip applier jaws moveable through a crimping stroke, and wherein gathering data comprises monitoring stages of a clip formation process of a clip applied by the clip applier jaws;

analyzing the gathered data to determine an appropriate operational adjustment of the surgical instrument in a future use of the surgical instrument; and

adjusting the operation of the surgical instrument to improve the operation of the surgical instrument.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein gathering data comprises storing data in a surgical hub.

17. The method of claim 15 , wherein gathering data comprises monitoring the clip formation process of a clip applied by the clip applier jaws using a variable resistance system.

18. The method of claim 15 , wherein gathering data comprises monitoring stages of the clip formation process of a clip applied by the clip applier jaws using a plurality of strain gauge circuits.

19. The method of claim 17 , wherein adjusting the surgical operation of the surgical instrument comprises adjusting a full-formed strain threshold.

20. The method of claim 17 , wherein gathering data comprises accessing existing information based on previous operations.
