Abstract

A method disclosed herein includes displaying information associated with a first application in a display area of an electronic device, detecting a change in direction of a continuous gesture across at least a portion of the display area between a first direction and a second direction different than the first direction, the continuous gesture associated with a request to display information of a second application, the first application being different than the second application, in response to detecting the change in direction of the continuous gesture, reducing display of the first application to a first portion of the display area and presenting a preview of information associated with the second application in a second portion of the display area in which the first application was presented prior to detection of the continuous gesture, based on a first characteristic of the continuous gesture, discontinuing providing the first information and display the second application in the display area, and based on a second characteristic of the continuous gesture, discontinuing providing the second information and display the first application in the display area.

Claims (50)

1. A method, comprising:

displaying, at an electronic device, first information associated with a first application in a display area of the electronic device;

detecting initiation of a continuous gesture across at least a portion of the display area in a first direction, wherein the continuous gesture is associated with a request to display second information associated with a second application, the first application being different than the second application;

detecting a change in direction of the continuous gesture from the first direction to a second direction;

in response to detecting the change in direction of the continuous gesture, reducing display of the first information to a first portion of the display area and presenting a preview of the second information associated with the second application in a second portion of the display area in which the first information was presented prior to detection of the continuous gesture;

detecting a characteristic of the continuous gesture, wherein the characteristic is one of a first characteristic or a second characteristic; and

performing one of the following:

in response to detecting the first characteristic of the continuous gesture, discontinuing displaying the first information, and displaying the second application in the display area; or

in response to detecting the second characteristic of the continuous gesture, discontinuing displaying the second information, and displaying the first application in the display area.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the continuous gesture originates at an edge of the display of the electronic device.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the characteristic of the continuous gesture comprises one of the following: a termination of the continuous gesture, another change in direction of the continuous gesture, or a reversion in direction from the second direction to the first direction.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein presenting the preview of the second information associated with the second application comprises displaying the preview of the second information without launching the second application.

5. The method of claim 4 , further comprising: inactivating functional operations of the second application while presenting the preview of the second information associated with the second application in the second portion of the display area.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein presenting the preview of the second information associated with the second application comprises presenting information associated with a calendar application.

7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

detecting the continuous gesture in a third direction different than the first and second directions; and

in response to detecting the third direction, increasing display of the second information in the display area and further reducing display of the first information in display area.

8. An electronic device, comprising:

at least one processor;

one or more non-transitory computer-readable storage media coupled to the at least one processor and storing programming instructions for execution by the at least one processor, wherein the programming instructions, when executed, cause the electronic device to perform operations comprising:

displaying, at the electronic device, first information associated with a first application in a display area of the electronic device;

detecting initiation of a continuous gesture across at least a portion of the display area in a first direction, wherein the continuous gesture is associated with a request to display second information associated with a second application, the first application being different than the second application;

detecting a change in direction of the continuous gesture from the first direction to a second direction;

in response to detecting the change in direction of the continuous gesture, reducing display of the first information to a first portion of the display area and presenting a preview of the second information associated with the second application in a second portion of the display area in which the first information was presented prior to detection of the continuous gesture;

detecting a characteristic of the continuous gesture, wherein the characteristic is one of a first characteristic or a second characteristic; and

performing one of the following:

in response to detecting the first characteristic of the continuous gesture, discontinuing displaying the first information, and displaying the second application in the display area; or

in response to detecting the second characteristic of the continuous gesture, discontinuing displaying the second information, and displaying the first application in the display area.

9. The electronic device of claim 8 , wherein the continuous gesture originates at an edge of the display of the electronic device.

10. The electronic device of claim 8 , wherein the characteristic of the continuous gesture comprises one of the following: a termination of the continuous gesture, another change in direction of the continuous gesture, or a reversion in direction from the second direction to the first direction.

11. The electronic device of claim 8 , wherein presenting the preview of the second information associated with the second application comprises displaying the preview of the second information without launching the second application.

12. The electronic device of claim 11 , the operations further comprising: inactivating functional operations of the second application while presenting the preview of the second information associated with the second application in the second portion of the display area.

13. The electronic device of claim 8 , wherein presenting the preview of the second information associated with the second application comprises presenting information associated with a calendar application.

14. The electronic device of claim 8 , the operations further comprising:

detecting the continuous gesture in a third direction different than the first and second directions; and

in response to detecting the third direction, increasing display of the second information in the display area and further reducing display of the first information in display area.

15. One or more non-transitory computer-readable media containing instructions which, when executed, cause an electronic device to perform operations comprising:

displaying, at the electronic device, first information associated with a first application in a display area of the electronic device;

detecting initiation of a continuous gesture across at least a portion of the display area in a first direction, wherein the continuous gesture is associated with a request to display second information associated with a second application, the first application being different than the second application;

detecting a change in direction of the continuous gesture from the first direction to a second direction;

in response to detecting the change in direction of the continuous gesture, reducing display of the first information to a first portion of the display area and presenting a preview of the second information associated with the second application in a second portion of the display area in which the first information was presented prior to detection of the continuous gesture;

detecting a characteristic of the continuous gesture, wherein the characteristic is one of a first characteristic or a second characteristic; and

performing one of the following:

in response to detecting the first characteristic of the continuous gesture, discontinuing displaying the first information, and displaying the second application in the display area; or

in response to detecting the second characteristic of the continuous gesture, discontinuing displaying the second information, and displaying the first application in the display area.

16. The one or more non-transitory computer-readable media of claim 15 , wherein the continuous gesture originates at an edge of the display of the electronic device.

17. The one or more non-transitory computer-readable media of claim 15 , wherein the characteristic of the continuous gesture comprises one of the following: a termination of the continuous gesture, another change in direction of the continuous gesture, or a reversion in direction from the second direction to the first direction.

18. The one or more non-transitory computer-readable media of claim 15 , wherein presenting the preview of the second information associated with the second application comprises displaying the preview of the second information without launching the second application.

19. The one or more non-transitory computer-readable media of claim 18 , the operations further comprising: inactivating functional operations of the second application while presenting the preview of the second information associated with the second application in the second portion of the display area.

20. The one or more non-transitory computer-readable media of claim 15 , wherein presenting the preview of the second information associated with the second application comprises presenting information associated with a calendar application.
