Abstract

An electrosurgical device comprises a body, an end effector, a cutting member, and a shaft. The end effector includes a pair of jaws that are operable to deliver RF energy to tissue that is clamped between the jaws. The cutting member is operable to sever tissue that is clamped between the jaws. The shaft extends between the body and the end effector. The shaft includes an articulation section that is operable to selectively position the end effector at non-parallel positions relative to the longitudinal axis of the shaft. Some versions include a rotation section that is distal to the articulation section. The rotation section is operable to rotate the end effector relative to the articulation section.

Claims (44)

1 . An apparatus, comprising:

(a) a body;

(b) a shaft extending distally from the body, wherein the shaft defines a longitudinal axis;

(c) an end effector located distally relative to the shaft, wherein the end effector is configured to sever, weld, or grasp tissue; and

(d) an articulation section interposed between the shaft and the end effector, wherein the articulation section is configured to bend to thereby deflect the end effector toward and away relative to the longitudinal axis of the shaft between a non-articulated configuration and an articulated configuration wherein the articulation assembly comprises:

(i) a flexible spine extending longitudinally toward the end effector in the non-articulated configuration, wherein a lateral width between a first lateral surface and a second lateral surface of the flexible spine decreases along a length of the flexible spine in a distal direction to thereby increase the flexibility of the articulation section, and

(ii) a longitudinal array of ribs, wherein each rib of the longitudinal array of ribs is connected to the flexible spine and extends laterally away from either the first lateral surface or the second lateral surface of the flexible spine.

2 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the articulation section further comprises a longitudinal array of ribs.

3 . The apparatus of claim 2 , wherein each rib of the longitudinal array of ribs is connected to the flexible spine.

4 . The apparatus of claim 3 , wherein each rib of the longitudinal array of ribs is integrally formed onto the flexible spine.

5 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the articulation section further comprises a first integrally formed longitudinal portion and a second integrally formed longitudinal portion, wherein the first integrally formed longitudinal portion comprises the flexible spine.

6 . The apparatus of claim 5 , wherein the first integrally formed longitudinal portion and the second integrally formed longitudinal portion are configured to laterally mate with each other.

7 . The apparatus of claim 6 , wherein the first integrally formed longitudinal portion defines a plurality of openings, wherein the second integrally formed longitudinal portion comprises a plurality of posts configured to fit within a respective opening of the plurality of openings.

8 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the end effector comprises a first jaw.

9 . The apparatus of claim 8 , wherein the end effector comprises a second jaw, wherein the first jaw and the second jaw are configured to pivot toward and away each other in order to grasp tissue.

10 . The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the end effector comprises a knife member configured to sever tissue grasped by the first jaw and the second jaw.

11 . The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the end effector further comprises an electrode assembly configured to apply RF energy to tissue grasped by the first jaw and the second jaw.

12 . The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the electrode assembly comprises a first electrode associated with the first jaw, and a second electrode associated with the second jaw.

The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the shaft comprises a band coupled to the articulation section, wherein the band is configured to actuate relative to the rest of the shaft to thereby drive deflection of the end effector between the articulated configuration and the non-articulated configuration.

14 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the body comprises a handle assembly.

15 . The apparatus of claim 14 , wherein the handle assembly comprises knob configured to rotate the shaft, the end effector, and the articulation section around the longitudinal axis.

16 . The apparatus of claim 14 , wherein the handle assembly comprises an articulation control configured to bend the articulation section.

17 . An apparatus, comprising:

(a) a body;

(b) a shaft extending distally from the body, wherein the shaft defines a longitudinal axis;

(c) an end effector located distally relative to the shaft, wherein the end effector is configured to sever, weld, or grasp tissue; and

(d) an articulation section interposed between the shaft and the end effector, wherein the articulation section is configured to bend to thereby deflect the end effector toward and away relative to the longitudinal axis of the shaft between a non-articulated configuration and an articulated configuration, wherein the articulation assembly comprises:

(i) a first longitudinal portion comprising a first spine and a first longitudinal array of ribs, wherein each rib of the first longitudinal array of ribs extends laterally away from the first spine, wherein at least one rib of the first longitudinal array of ribs comprises a protrusion, and

(ii) a second longitudinal portion comprising second spine and a second longitudinal array of ribs, wherein each rib of the second longitudinal array of ribs extends laterally away from the second spine, wherein at least one rib of the second longitudinal array of ribs defines a complementary recess configured to receive the protrusion in order to laterally couple the first longitudinal portion and the second longitudinal portion together.

18 . The apparatus of claim 17 , wherein the first longitudinal portion and the second longitudinal portion are formed from a resilient material such that the articulation section is biased toward the non-articulated configuration.

19 . An apparatus, comprising:

(a) a body;

(b) a shaft extending distally from the body, wherein the shaft defines a longitudinal axis;

(c) an end effector located distally relative to the shaft, wherein the end effector is configured to sever, weld, or grasp tissue; and

(d) an articulation section interposed between the shaft and the end effector, wherein the articulation section is configured to bend to thereby deflect the end effector toward and away relative to the longitudinal axis of the shaft between a non-articulated configuration and an articulated configuration, wherein the articulation assembly comprises:

(i) a first integral longitudinal portion comprising:

(A) a first longitudinally extending spine,

(B) a first longitudinal array of ribs extending laterally from the first longitudinally extending spine, and

(C) a plurality of posts laterally spaced away from the longitudinal axis while the end effector is in the non-articulated configuration, and

(ii) a second integral longitudinal portion comprising:

(A) a second longitudinally extending spine, and

(B) a second longitudinal array of ribs extending laterally from the second longitudinally extending spine,

wherein the second integral longitudinally extending spine defines a plurality of post holes configured to receive a respective post of the plurality of posts in order to laterally couple the first integral longitudinal portion and the second integral longitudinal portion together.

20 . The apparatus of claim 19 , wherein the articulation section comprises a longitudinal array of ribs.
