Abstract

Disclosed systems include a self-contained electroencephalogram (EEG) recording patch comprising a first electrode, a second electrode and wherein the first and second electrodes cooperate to measure a skin-electrode impedance, a substrate containing circuitry for generating an EEG signal from the measured skin-electrode impedance, amplifying the EEG signal, digitizing the EEG signal, and retrievably storing the EGG signal. The patch also comprises a power source and an enclosure that houses the substrate, the power source, and the first and second electrodes in a unitary package.

Claims (39)

1. An electroencephalogram (EEG) monitoring device comprising:

a water-resistant unitary housing;

a first electrode supported by a first electrode printed circuit board and a second electrode supported by a second electrode printed circuit board, the first and second electrodes being configured to be attached to a scalp of a patient and sense EEG signals; and

a printed circuit board supporting a power source and a wireless transmitter configured to transmit the EEG signals,

wherein the first and second electrode printed circuit boards are surface mounted to the printed circuit board and are supported by the printed circuit board and protrude from the printed circuit board,

wherein the first electrode printed circuit board, the second electrode printed circuit board, and the printed circuit board are enclosed in the water-resistant unitary housing, and

wherein surfaces of the first and second electrodes are exposed on a surface of the water-resistant unitary housing.

2. The device of claim 1 , wherein the printed circuit board further comprises electronic circuitry configured to amplify and digitize the EEG signals.

3. The device of claim 1 , further comprising a memory configured to store the EEG signals before the EEG signals are transmitted by the wireless transmitter.

4. The device of claim 1 , wherein the first electrode and second electrode are spaced from each other.

5. The device of claim 1 , wherein the power source comprises a rechargeable battery.

6. The device of claim 1 , wherein the water-resistant unitary housing comprises an overmolded enclosure.

7. The device of claim 1 , wherein the wireless transmitter is configured to transmit the EEG signals in real time.

8. A system for electroencephalogram (EEG) monitoring comprising:

an EEG monitoring device comprising:

a water-resistant unitary housing;

a first electrode supported by a first electrode printed circuit board and a second electrode supported by a second electrode printed circuit board, the first and second electrodes being configured to be attached to a scalp of a patient and sense EEG signals; and

a printed circuit board supporting a power source and a wireless transmitter configured to transmit the EEG signals,

wherein the first and second electrode printed circuit boards are surface mounted to the printed circuit board and are supported by the printed circuit board and protrude from the printed circuit board,

wherein the first electrode printed circuit board, the second electrode printed circuit board, and the printed circuit board are enclosed in the water-resistant unitary housing, and

wherein surfaces of the first and second electrodes are exposed on a surface of the water-resistant unitary housing; and

a non-transitory computer readable medium storing instructions that, when executed by at least one processor, cause the at least one processor to:

determine a single channel EEG signals from the EEG signals received from the wireless transmitter using bipolar derivation; and

analyze the single channel EEG signals to identify a seizure.

9. The system of claim 8 , wherein the instructions further cause the at least one processor to generate an alert responsive to identification of the seizure.

10. The system of claim 8 , wherein the instructions further cause the at least one processor to transmit an alert to a remote computing device responsive to identification of the seizure.

11. The system of claim 8 , wherein the instructions further cause the at least one processor to store the EEG signals in a memory for later retrieval and review by a clinician.

12. A method of operating a system for remote electroencephalogram (EEG) monitoring, the method comprising:

collecting EEG signals with a first electrode supported by a first electrode printed circuit board and a second electrode supported by a second electrode printed circuit board, the first and second electrode printed circuit boards being surface mounted to a printed circuit board and being supported by and protruding from the printed circuit board, surfaces of the first and second electrodes being exposed on a surface of a housing that encloses the first electrode printed circuit board, the second electrode printed circuit board, and the printed circuit board, and the first and second electrodes being configured to be attached to a scalp of a patient; and

transmitting the EEG signals with a wireless transmitter supported by the printed circuit board.

13. The method of claim 12 , further comprising storing the EEG signals in a memory.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein the EEG signals are stored as an electronic medical record.

15. The method of claim 13 , further comprising causing an identification of a seizure using the EEG signals based on performing a bipolar derivation to form a single channel from voltages measured by the first and second electrodes.

16. The method of claim 15 , further comprising causing a generation of an alert responsive to identifying the seizure.

17. The method of claim 16 , wherein the alert is generated by at least one of a base station or a remote computing device.

18. The method of claim 17 , wherein the remote computing device comprises a smart phone.

19. The method of claim 12 , wherein the housing is a water-resistant unitary housing.

20. The method of claim 12 , wherein transmitting the EEG signals is performed in real time.

21. The method of claim 12 , wherein the housing comprises an overmolded enclosure.
