Abstract

In one implementation, a universal translator device for translating protocols, the device includes one or more peripheral device interfaces through which communication from one or more peripheral devices is received using any of a plurality of protocols; a protocol translator that is (i) preconfigured with translation mappings to translate between each possible permutation of the plurality of protocols and (ii) programmed to translate, using the translation mappings, signals received from the peripheral devices into at least one target protocol; and a wireless interface that is configured to transmit wireless signals in the target protocol, the wireless signals having been translated into the target protocol by the protocol translator.

Claims (40)

1. An assistance device for use with a security system, the assistance device comprising:

a housing;

at least one peripheral device interface configured to wirelessly communicate with one or more peripheral devices, the at least one peripheral device interface positioned within the housing;

a processor configured to process data packets received at the at least one peripheral device interface from the one or more peripheral devices, the processor positioned within the housing and in communication with the at least one peripheral device interface; and

an openable cover of the housing, wherein the openable cover is normally in a closed position and when the openable cover is in an open position a user selectable assist mode is selected,

wherein the assistance device is configured to:

receive, when the openable cover is in the open position, a first wireless transmission from a peripheral device comprising a sensor-transmitter at the at least one peripheral device interface, and

upon receiving the first wireless transmission, process the first wireless transmission at the processor and transmit subsequent wireless transmissions on behalf of the sensor-transmitter and for receipt by an external control panel of the security system.

2. The assistance device of claim 1 , wherein the subsequent wireless transmissions have a predefined characteristic that causes a configuration process to be performed with respect to the sensor-transmitter at the external control panel.

3. The assistance device of claim 2 , wherein the first wireless transmission received at the at least one peripheral device interface is a special transmission predefined in a configuration process for the sensor-transmitter.

4. The assistance device of claim 1 , wherein the processor is further configured to translate the data packets received from the one or more peripheral devices.

5. The assistance device of claim 4 , wherein the processor translates the data packets using a firmware module.

6. The assistance device of claim 4 , wherein the processor is further configured to generate transmissions to be received at an external control panel of the security system.

7. The assistance device of claim 1 , the assistance device further comprising a memory configured to store state information of the one or more peripheral devices received at the at least one peripheral device interface.

8. The assistance device of claim 7 , wherein the at least one peripheral device interface is further configured to receive wireless communications, wherein the assistance device is configured to:

determine, using the stored state information in the memory and the received wireless communications at the at least one peripheral device interface, a change in the stored state information for a sensor-transmitter of the one or more peripheral devices; and

generate, at the processor, a transmission to an external control panel of the security system, the transmission induced by the change in state of a sensor associated with the sensor-transmitter.

9. An assistance device for use with a security system, the assistance device comprising:

a housing;

at least one peripheral device interface configured to wirelessly communicate with one or more peripheral devices, the at least one peripheral device interface positioned within the housing;

a processor configured to process data packets received at the at least one peripheral device interface from the one or more peripheral devices, the processor positioned within the housing and in communication with the at least one peripheral device interface; and

an openable cover of the housing, wherein the openable cover is normally in a closed position and when the openable cover is in an open position a user selectable assist mode is selected,

wherein the assistance device is further configured to enroll a sensor-transmitter with the security system when the openable cover is in the open position and the user selectable assist mode is selected.

10. The assistance device of claim 9 , wherein the assistance device is configured to enroll the sensor-transmitter by:

receiving, at the at least one peripheral device interface, a first wireless transmission from the sensor-transmitter, the first wireless transmission received when the openable cover is in the open position; and

generating, at the processor, a second wireless transmission to an external control panel of the security system to trigger enrollment protocols of the external control panel.

11. The assistance device of claim 10 , wherein the assistance device is further configured to translate the first wireless transmission from the sensor-transmitter at the processor prior to generating the second wireless transmission.

12. The assistance device of claim 11 , wherein the first wireless transmission received at the at least one peripheral device interface is a special transmission predefined in a configuration process of the sensor-transmitter.

13. The assistance device of claim 10 , wherein the assistance device is further configured to:

determine whether the sensor-transmitter is a last sensor-transmitter to be enrolled with the external control panel of the security system.

14. The assistance device of claim 13 , wherein upon determining that the sensor-transmitter is the last sensor-transmitter to be enrolled with the external control panel of the security system, the assistance device is configured to:

exit from the user selectable assist mode.

15. The assistance device of claim 13 , wherein upon determining that the sensor-transmitter is not the last sensor-transmitter to be enrolled with the external control panel of the security system, the assistance device is configured to

receive, at the at least one peripheral device interface, a third wireless transmission from a second sensor-transmitter;

translate, at the processor, the third wireless transmission from the second sensor-transmitter; and

generate, at the processor, a fourth wireless transmission to the external control panel of the security system to trigger enrollment protocols of the external control panel.

16. The assistance device of claim 10 , wherein different protocols are used in the assistance device for receiving first wireless transmissions at the at least one peripheral device interface and transmitting second wireless transmissions from the assistance device.

17. The assistance device of claim 16 , wherein the received first wireless transmission is a special wireless transmission predefined in a configuration process for the sensor-transmitter.

18. The assistance device of claim 16 , wherein a transmission protocol used by the assistance device in transmitting wireless transmissions to the external control panel is in an on-off sequence predefined to enroll the sensor-transmitter.

19. The assistance device of claim 16 , wherein the received first wireless transmission is a transmission induced by a change in state of a sensor associated with the sensor-transmitter.
