Abstract

Provided are electrodes that may be used in electrochemical cells that incorporate relatively high loading of active material while also demonstrating excellent adhesion, resistance to mechanical breakdown, and also offer improved capacity retention, particularly at discharge rates of C/2 or greater.

Claims (27)

1. An electrode comprising:

an electrochemically active material and a binder, the electrochemically active material intermixed with the binder;

the electrochemically active material comprising one or more of Ni, Co, Mg, Mn, S, Al, Cu, Fe, Mg, B, Ta, V, or Ga, Si, carbon, or combinations thereof;

the electrochemically active material coated onto a current collector substrate, wherein the electrochemically active material is a cathode active material coated at an areal density of 30 mg/cm 2 or greater, and the binder is distributed within the electrochemically active material such that the ratio of binder at a surface of the cathode active material relative to the binder at a current collector substrate surface is 2.0 or lower.

2. The electrode of claim 1 , wherein the electrochemically active material comprises Ni and Co.

3. The electrode of claim 1 , wherein the electrochemically active material comprises Ni, Co, and one or more of Mn, Al, or Mg.

4. The electrode of claim 3 , wherein said electrochemically active material comprises NCM-111, NCM-424, NCM-523, NCM-622, NCM-811, NCA or combinations thereof.

The electrode of claim 1 , wherein said electrochemically active material comprises one or more of LiCoO 2 , LiNiO 2 , Li 2 CuO 2 , Li 1+x Mn 2−x O 4 wherein 0≤x≤0.33, Li 2 CuO 2 , LiV 3 O 8 , V 2 O 5 and Cu 2 V 2 O 7 , LiNi 1−x M x O 2 wherein M=Co, Mn, Al, Cu, Fe, Mg, B or Ga, and 0.01≤x≤0.3, LiMn 2−x M x O 2 wherein M=Co, Ni, Fe, Cr, Zn or Ta, and 0.01≤x≤0.1, Li 2 Mn 3 MO 8 wherein M=Fe, Co, Ni, Cu or Zn; LiMn 2 O 4 wherein a portion of Li is substituted with alkaline earth metal ions, disulfide compounds, Fe 2 (MoO 4 ) 3 , LiFe 3 O 4 , or any combination thereof.

6. The electrode of claim 1 , wherein the areal density is 30 mg/cm 2 to 75 mg/cm 2 .

7. The electrode of claim 1 , wherein the areal density is 30 mg/cm 2 to 50 mg/cm 2 .

8. The electrode of claim 1 , wherein the binder is distributed within the electrochemically active material such that a midpoint ratio or the amount of binder at a midpoint of the electrochemically active material relative to the binder at a current collector substrate surface is 1.5 or lower.

9. The electrode of claim 1 , wherein the ratio is 1.8 or lower.

10. The electrode of claim 1 , wherein the ratio is 1.6 or lower.

11. An electrode comprising:

an electrochemically active material and a binder, the electrochemically active material intermixed with the binder;

the electrochemically active material comprising one or more of Ni, Co, Mg, Mn, S, Al, Cu, Fe, Mg, B, Ta, V, or Ga, Si, carbon, or combinations thereof;

the electrochemically active material coated onto a current collector substrate;

wherein the electrochemically active material is coated onto the current collector substrate at an electrochemical loading of 4 mAh/cm 2 or greater, wherein the electrochemically active material is a cathode active material and the binder is distributed within the cathode active material such that the ratio of binder at a surface of the cathode active material relative to the binder at a current collector substrate surface is 2.0 or lower.

12. The electrode of claim 11 , wherein the electrochemically active material comprises Ni and Co.

13. The electrode of claim 11 , wherein the electrochemically active material comprises Ni, Co, and one or more of Mn, Al, or Mg.

14. The electrode of claim 13 , wherein said electrochemically active material comprises NCM-111, NCM-424, NCM-523, NCM-622, NCM-811, NCA or combinations thereof.

The electrode of claim 11 , wherein said electrochemically active material comprises one or more of LiCoO 2 , LiNiO 2 , Li 2 CuO 2 , Li 1+x Mn 2−x O 4 wherein 0≤x≤0.33, Li 2 CuO 2 , LiV 3 O 8 , V 2 O 5 and Cu 2 V 2 O 7 , LiNi 1−x M x O 2 wherein M=Co, Mn, Al, Cu, Fe, Mg, B or Ga, and 0.01≤x≤0.3, LiMn 2−x M x O 2 wherein M=Co, Ni, Fe, Cr, Zn or Ta, and 0.01≤x≤0.1, Li 2 Mn 3 MO 8 wherein M=Fe, Co, Ni, Cu or Zn; LiMn 2 O 4 wherein a portion of Li is substituted with alkaline earth metal ions, disulfide compounds, Fe 2 (MoO 4 ) 3 , LiFe 3 O 4 , or any combination thereof.

16. The electrode of claim 11 , wherein the electrochemical loading is 4-15 mAh/cm 2 .

17. The electrode of claim 11 , wherein the electrochemical loading is 4-10 mAh/cm 2 .

18. The electrode of claim 11 , wherein the ratio is 1.8 or lower.

19. The electrode of claim 11 , wherein the ratio is 1.6 or lower.

20. The electrode of claim 11 , wherein the binder is distributed within the electrochemically active material such that a midpoint ratio or the amount of binder at a midpoint of the electrochemically active material relative to the binder at a current collector substrate surface is 1.5 or lower.
