Abstract

Systems and methods for the intravascular treatment of clot material within a blood vessel of a human patient are disclosed herein. A method in accordance with embodiments of the present technology can include, for example, positioning a distal portion of a catheter proximate to the clot material within the blood vessel. The method can further include coupling a pressure source to the catheter via a tubing subsystem including a valve or other fluid control device and, while the valve is closed, activating the pressure source to charge a vacuum. The valve can then be opened to apply the vacuum to the catheter to thereby aspirate at least a portion of the clot material from the blood vessel and into the catheter.

Claims (38)

1. An aspiration system with accelerated response, comprising:

an aspiration pump in communication with a first chamber, wherein the first chamber comprises a first barrel of a first syringe, and wherein the aspiration pump comprises a plunger of the first syringe slidably received in the first barrel;

an aspiration catheter configured for placement into fluid communication with the first chamber by way of an aspiration tube;

a second chamber in between the aspiration pump and the aspiration catheter, wherein the second chamber comprises a second barrel of a second syringe; and

a valve between the second chamber and the aspiration catheter, wherein the valve is configured to be closed while negative pressure is generated in the first and second chambers, and wherein the valve is configured to be opened after the negative pressure is generated in the first and second chambers; and

wherein upon actuation to open the valve and the negative pressure having been generated in the first and second chambers, fluid is rapidly aspirated from the aspiration catheter into the second chamber.

2. The aspiration system of claim 1 wherein:

the valve comprises a user-actuatable stopcock valve; and

the aspiration tube comprises a first tubing section coupled to the second chamber and one side of the stopcock valve and a second tubing section coupled to the other side of the stopcock valve.

3. The aspiration system of claim 1 wherein:

the valve comprises a user-actuatable stopcock valve; and

the aspiration tube comprises a first tubing section coupled to the second chamber and one side of the stopcock valve and a second tubing section coupled to the other side of the stopcock valve; and

the second syringe further comprises a second plunger slidably received in the second barrel.

4. The aspiration system of claim 1 , further comprising a one-way valve separate from the valve between the first chamber and the second chamber configured to block flow from the first chamber to the second chamber and allow flow from the second to the first chamber.

5. The aspiration system of claim 1 , wherein the first syringe comprises a secondary pressure source and the second syringe comprises a primary pressure source.

6. The aspiration system of claim 5 wherein the first plunger is rotationally received in the first barrel and the second plunger is rotatably received in the second barrel.

7. The aspiration system of claim 1 wherein a negative pressure in the first chamber causes fluid flow from the second chamber to the first chamber when the valve is opened.

8. The aspiration system of claim 1 wherein the first chamber and the second chamber are configured such that both the first chamber and the second chamber can both be at a negative pressure at the same time, and wherein upon opening the valve the negative pressure in the first chamber contributes to a rapid pressure drop in the aspiration catheter.

9. The aspiration system of claim 1 , further comprising a filter in the second chamber.

10. The aspiration system of claim 9 wherein the filter includes a plurality of pores sized to inhibit clot material from flowing therethrough and to permit blood to flow therethrough.

11. The aspiration system of claim 1 wherein the first chamber is fluidically coupled in serial to the second chamber.

12. An aspiration system with accelerated response, comprising:

an aspiration pump in communication with a first chamber, wherein the first chamber comprises a first barrel of a syringe, and wherein the pump comprises a plunger of the first syringe slidably received in the first barrel;

an aspiration catheter configured for placement into fluid communication with the first chamber by way of an aspiration tube;

a second chamber in between the aspiration pump and the aspiration catheter, wherein the second chamber comprises a second barrel; and

a valve between the second chamber and the aspiration catheter, wherein the valve is configured to be closed while negative pressure is generated in the first and second chambers, and wherein the valve is configured to be opened after the negative pressure is generated in the first and second chambers;

wherein upon actuation to open the valve and the negative pressure having been generated in the first and second chambers, fluid is rapidly aspirated from the aspiration catheter into the second chamber.

13. The aspiration system of claim 12 wherein the second chamber is configured to sealingly receive the first barrel.

14. The aspiration system of claim 12 , further comprising a filter in the second barrel.

15. The aspiration system of claim 12 , further comprising a filter in the second chamber, wherein the filter includes a plurality of pores sized to inhibit clot material from flowing therethrough and to permit blood to flow therethrough.

16. The aspiration system of claim 12 wherein the first chamber is fluidically coupled in serial to the second chamber.

17. An aspiration system with accelerated response, comprising:

an aspiration pump in communication with a first chamber, wherein the first chamber comprises a first barrel of a syringe, and wherein the pump comprises a plunger of the first syringe slidably received in the first barrel;

an aspiration catheter configured for placement into fluid communication with the first chamber by way of an aspiration tube;

a second chamber in between the aspiration pump and the aspiration catheter, wherein the second chamber comprises a second barrel, wherein the second chamber is configured to sealingly receive the first barrel; and

a valve between the second chamber and the aspiration catheter, wherein the valve is configured to be closed while negative pressure is generated in the first and second chambers, and wherein the valve is configured to be opened after the negative pressure is generated in the first and second chambers;

wherein upon actuation to open the valve and the negative pressure having been generated in the first and second chambers, fluid is rapidly aspirated from the aspiration catheter into the second chamber.

18. The aspiration system of claim 17 , further comprising a filter in the second barrel.
